After hanging up the phone, Su Ruo excitedly started teaching Xi Zi to call “Daddy,” fully intending to show off in front of Xi Yuechen later.
“Baby, come on—let’s call Daddy, okay?”
She scooped Xi Zi up and laid him on the blanket. Once he was settled, she lay down beside his head, gently stroking his little arm and smiling as she coaxed him.
Maybe he was tired. Xi Zi showed no interest in Su Ruo’s patient encouragement—he didn’t even glance at her.
“Oh come on, don’t be like that. You already know how to say ‘Mama,’ so just call ‘Daddy’ once, okay? Otherwise, when Daddy comes back, how heartbroken will he be?”
Seeing that Xi Zi was ignoring her, Su Ruo couldn’t help reaching out to poke his little cheek lightly.
“Son, I already called your dad back home. If you don’t put in some effort, where am I supposed to put my face? Come on, follow me and say it—Da—ddy. It’s super easy, right?”
She leaned closer, poking his chubby cheek while softly instructing him.
But who would have thought that Xi Zi seemed not to hear her at all? There was absolutely no response. Frustrated, Su Ruo cupped his face and gently shook it twice.
“Son, you’re really being naughty like this. At least give me a little face, will you? I dragged your dad back here shamelessly—do you know how hard it is to get him to skip work? The odds are about the same as the sun rising in the west. Do you understand?”
Not daring to shake his face any harder, Su Ruo reached down, grabbed the hem of his clothes, and tugged at it without restraint.
Such a tiny little person, yet he dared to ignore her—who did he learn that from? Even his dad had never ignored her, yet this little brat already dared to do so.
Xi Zi hadn’t taken a nap at noon, and just now he’d been enthusiastically “tortured” by Su Ruo for quite a while. He was already exhausted. His eyelids drooped as he tried to fall asleep, but who would have guessed that his dear mother had absolutely no sense of timing and insisted on disturbing him.
So, the little brat got angry.
The angry little brat lifted his hand with some effort, grabbed Su Ruo’s arm, clenched his fist, and dug his sharp little nails into her skin to express his displeasure.
“Ouch! You’re this small and you already dare to commit domestic violence against your own mom? Let go, right now!” Su Ruo exclaimed in mock shock, raising her voice and lifting her eyebrows, widening her eyes in an attempt to scare him.
Faced with such a bluffing “paper tiger,” how could Xi Zi possibly be afraid? He made two indistinct sounds from his mouth and continued digging his nails into Su Ruo.
Su Ruo was very careful about Xi Zi’s hygiene—his fingernails and toenails were trimmed regularly and never allowed to grow long. So even though his nails were sharp and he was using some force, there was no way he could actually hurt her. At most, it was just a slight prickling sensation, well within her tolerance.
“Fine, go ahead and scratch then.”
Seeing how persistent her son was, Su Ruo simply gave up. She lay back flat, letting Xi Zi scratch her however he pleased.
Even if he was using the wrong method, persistence was still a virtue worth encouraging, right? Su Ruo comforted herself with that thought, feeling slightly guilty.
“Son, take it easy, okay? Your mom here has thick skin—I’m not afraid of this little tickling. But what if you use too much strength? My precious son can’t be wronged even a little.”
Looking at Xi Zi’s tightly pursed lips and serious little face, Su Ruo laughed as she spoke, with a distinctly roguish air. Her face clearly said: What can you do to me?
After scratching for a while and seeing that Su Ruo showed no reaction at all, Xi Zi lost interest. He simply withdrew his hand, closed his eyes, and prepared to go to sleep.
“Son, don’t rush to sleep yet. Your dad is about to come back—if you fall asleep like this and your dad arrives, what am I supposed to do? Perform a duet by myself?”
Seeing that her son was about to fall asleep, Su Ruo couldn’t help disturbing him again. She knew it was wrong not to let him sleep, but she really wanted the commander to hear Xi Zi call him “Daddy” the moment he walked in. Just imagining that scene felt incredibly warm—he would definitely be moved. Haha.
But the poor Xi Zi had already been tormented by Su Ruo for so long that he was too tired to bother with her anymore. He let her pinch his little face and poke his tiny legs, completely ignoring her, remaining unmoved as he continued sleeping. Before long, he fell deeply asleep. No matter how Su Ruo disturbed him, he didn’t budge.
Sigh…
Her son was really not pulling his weight.
Watching Xi Zi sleep, Su Ruo let out a helpless sigh. She had wanted to give the commander a surprise.
But looking at Xi Zi’s tender sleeping face, her heart softened again. Forget it—he already knew how to call “Mama.” Calling “Daddy” was only a matter of time. Let him sleep; they’d settle the score after he woke up.
She pushed herself up, gently kissed Xi Zi on the cheek, then went to the bedroom to get his small blanket. She planned to let him sleep on the rug—after all, it was still early, the sunlight was warm, and there was no fear of him catching a chill.
After settling Xi Zi properly, Su Ruo estimated that Xi Yuechen should be back soon. She went to the kitchen and used the blender to make him a glass of watermelon juice. There wasn’t enough time—otherwise, she would have made sour plum soup to cool him down.
At this moment, Su Ruo had already forgotten her disappointment over Xi Zi not calling “Daddy.” She hummed softly to herself, bustling about happily.
Her timing was spot on. Just as she finished making the watermelon juice, she heard the sound of the door opening.
The commander was back!
Su Ruo’s eyes lit up. She dashed out of the kitchen and ran to the doorway, throwing herself into Xi Yuechen’s arms just as he finished closing the door.
He still carried the dry, scorching heat from outside, which immediately transferred to her skin. But Su Ruo didn’t care about that at all. The moment she hugged him, before he could say anything, she excitedly whispered, “Commander, Xi Zi can say ‘Mama’ now! He just called me ‘Mama’!”
Xi Yuechen hadn’t even recovered from Su Ruo’s enthusiastic embrace when he heard her excited voice. He froze for a brief moment.
Xi Zi… could talk now?
He thought about it somewhat sluggishly.
“Well? Aren’t you excited too? Haha! You have no idea how thrilled I was just now!”
Su Ruo hung onto his neck, dangling from him as she looked up with a beaming smile. Her face was full of happiness.
“He’s started calling people?” Xi Yuechen asked in rare surprise. In his mind, the little guy was still just a babbling toddler.
“Yes! He called me several times!” Su Ruo was still extremely excited, brilliant light flickering in her eyes, making Xi Yuechen’s heart skip a beat.
“Not bad.”
Xi Yuechen slightly curved his lips, offering a reserved compliment to his son. He was happy too, though his expression only softened a little, nowhere near as excited as Su Ruo.
“What do you mean ‘not bad’? That’s amazing,” Su Ruo retorted unhappily, pouting.
Xi Yuechen found it amusing to look at Su Ruo hanging from him, letting her put all her weight on his neck. That little bit of weight was nothing for him.
Besides, seeing Su Ruo acting like a child—mischievous with a hint of shamelessness—made him feel rather content.
“Mm, very amazing,” Xi Yuechen nodded, indulging her.
“Hmph, you’re just brushing me off.”
Su Ruo could tell he was only saying that to appease her, so she scoffed in disdain, though she still had no intention of getting down.
Xi Yuechen smiled, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. He glanced around and asked in a low voice, “Where’s Xi Zi?”
Su Ruo raised an eyebrow and teased, “What, do you want Xi Zi to call you ‘Daddy’?”
Was the commander jealous? Haha—did he feel neglected by Xi Zi?
Hearing the teasing in her tone, Xi Yuechen continued calmly, “Asleep?”
“Yes, he just fell asleep,” Su Ruo replied, watching his expression for any clues. Unfortunately, with her level of observation, she didn’t notice anything at all.
“I was just trying to teach him to call you ‘Daddy,’ but your son wouldn’t give me any face. He closed his eyes and refused to say anything, falling asleep right away. Tsk tsk—such a pity, right?”
She shook Xi Yuechen by the neck, asking with malicious delight.
“No. It’s only a matter of time,” Xi Yuechen said calmly, not in the least anxious. In fact, he felt quite gratified. His son had started calling people—any parent would be happy. As for not calling “Daddy” yet—no problem. If he could call “Mama,” was he afraid he wouldn’t call “Daddy” someday?
Xi Yuechen was completely confident. There was no rush.
Seeing none of the disappointment she had hoped for, Su Ruo felt a little let down. She glared at the unruffled Xi Yuechen, then jumped down from him.
“Go change your clothes. I made you some watermelon juice—come drink it.”
As she walked away, she tiptoed and lightly patted Xi Yuechen’s cheek, smiling brightly.
Watching the energetic Su Ruo, Xi Yuechen’s eyes overflowed with warmth and indulgence. He obediently went to the bedroom to change clothes, washed his face, then came back to the living room and drank the watermelon juice Su Ruo had prepared in one go.
Meanwhile, Su Ruo sat back down beside Xi Zi. She held a book in her hand but didn’t open it. Lying on the soft blanket, she blinked as she watched her sleeping son.
When Xi Yuechen walked over, he saw this scene. A smile surfaced on his face. He didn’t speak to break the quiet atmosphere. He casually picked up a book from the table, sat down on a nearby chair, and read silently.
After some time—no one knew how long—Su Ruo fell asleep without realizing it, only to be woken up by her son.
With her eyes still closed, she moved the small hand that was lightly scratching her cheek away and let out a long hum.
“Bad boy,” she muttered drowsily, snorting softly.
