RMM -Chapter 315 You’d Better Keep Your Own Dog on a Tight Leash

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 315 of 365 6

The person who arrived was Lian Yunduo’s brother-in-law, Zhang Minqiang. As soon as he entered the building, he heard a woman’s sharp scream. The voice sounded familiar—rather like his sister-in-law Yunduo’s—but he laughed and shook his head. How could it possibly be Yunduo?

Yet after he went upstairs, he saw Lian Yunduo sprawled on the floor, covered in dumplings, utterly miserable and disheveled.

The sight made his face change instantly. He rushed over, but the moment he got closer, he saw Xi Yuechen standing there, radiating murderous hostility, his face so cold it seemed capable of freezing ice slag out of the air.

Zhang Minqiang wasn’t stupid. One look told him something must have happened between these two. Seeing Yunduo in such a sorry state and then looking at Regiment Commander Xi’s terrifying expression, his vision suddenly darkened.

Yunduo must have offended Regiment Commander Xi.

“Regiment Commander Xi, this…”
Zhang Minqiang asked stiffly, sweat seeping into his palms. He didn’t even dare look at Xi Yuechen’s face.

Xi Yuechen looked at the flustered Zhang Minqiang and said in a voice as cold as ice, “Battalion Commander Zhang, don’t bring just anything into the army compound. It’s filthy.”

At those words, cold sweat poured down Zhang Minqiang’s back. Though he didn’t know exactly what had happened, just from Regiment Commander Xi’s tone he knew he was truly angry. Normally, Xi Yuechen hardly ever spoke to him at all—let alone with such sharp, biting words.

What on earth had Yunduo done to anger him so badly?

Under Xi Yuechen’s blade-like aura, Zhang Minqiang shivered, a sheen of cold sweat forced out on his forehead.

“Yes, yes… I’m sorry. This is my fault. I’ll have Yunduo leave immediately. She won’t appear again…”

The Xi Yuechen Zhang Minqiang knew was always icy, like a block of ice without the slightest ripple. Now, at such close range, facing his anger—and with that anger directed at him—there was no way he could remain calm. Without thinking, he apologized repeatedly. Thinking about how he’d been dragged into this mess by Lian Yunduo, he wished he could make that jinx disappear on the spot. She was completely useless and had brought him such huge trouble.

Damn it—just like her sister. Neither of them was any good.

“Get lost.”

Xi Yuechen caught the smell of dumplings lingering in the air, the disgust in his eyes deepening. He had no intention of entangling himself further with them and bluntly told them to get out and stop sullying his doorway.

“Yes, yes, I’ll take her and leave right now. I’m terribly sorry, Commander. Please don’t take offense. I’ll definitely teach her a lesson…”

Zhang Minqiang didn’t dare look at Xi Yuechen again. He bent down in a hurry to pull Lian Yunduo up, anger boiling in his heart—he wished he could kick this jinx down the stairs.

“Well now, this is lively.”

At that moment, a voice suddenly rang out, carrying a hint of amusement, slicing through the oppressive atmosphere.

When Zhang Minqiang heard it, he didn’t know whether to feel relieved or even more nervous. Either way, his grip on Lian Yunduo tightened.

It was Su Ruo.

Only then did Xi Yuechen’s expression soften slightly, the icy chill in his eyes melting away.

Su Ruo curled her lips and looked up at him. “Commander, Xi Zi is too heavy. I can’t hold him.”

At her words, Xi Yuechen’s expression warmed further. He lifted his foot, about to go downstairs to take the child from her—but Lian Yunduo was still lying at his feet, blocking his path.

Xi Yuechen frowned and was just about to kick her aside when Zhang Minqiang moved quickly, dragging the still-trembling Lian Yunduo away and clearing a path.

Xi Yuechen didn’t spare them even a glance. He walked straight toward Su Ruo, his eyes fixed on her faintly smiling face.

Su Ruo handed Xi Zi over to him, then strolled to the doorway. Looking at the two before her—the pale-faced Lian Yunduo and the uneasy Zhang Minqiang—she let out a cold laugh.

“You should keep your own dog on a tight leash, Battalion Commander Zhang. Don’t let it run around biting people and peeing everywhere.”

One look at the scene and Su Ruo understood what farce had just played out. Her anger flared instantly. She’d only just dealt with one Zhou Yunzhen, and now another shameless one had shown up. One after another, endlessly—did they really think she, Su Ruo, was easy to bully?

Her words were vicious, but Zhang Minqiang didn’t dare retort. First, she was Xi Yuechen’s wife—the regiment commander’s wife—a big shot he couldn’t afford to offend. Second, he didn’t even know exactly what had happened today. Naturally, whatever the Xi couple said was final.

“Yes, Sister-in-law, I’m really sorry. I was too negligent. This will absolutely never happen again.”

The coldness on Su Ruo’s face deepened. “Was it your negligence, or is it because your wife, Lian Yunfen, finds her days too peaceful? Battalion Commander Zhang, you really do have a good wife.”

Her voice carried an icy edge, making Zhang Minqiang feel chilled to the bone.

Again it was Lian Yunfen! He knew it—whenever something went wrong, it was always that troublemaking woman behind it. He’d warned her long ago not to provoke Regiment Commander Xi’s wife, but she wouldn’t listen. Now look—she’d caused a disaster.

In his heart, Zhang Minqiang cursed Lian Yunfen until the air turned blue. If she were here, he’d have slapped her on the spot. A useless woman who never brought peace.

“Sister-in-law, when I get back, I’ll definitely discipline Lian Yunfen properly. She’s ignorant and ill-mannered. Please don’t take this to heart. I guarantee she’ll behave herself from now on.”

Seeing how humble he’d become, Su Ruo didn’t want to push him further. It seemed he really hadn’t known about this—it was all Lian Yunfen’s doing. A grown man frightened into this state… there was no point tormenting him further. Fine. Pity him for marrying such a woman—he deserved to be dragged down by her.

“And this woman—who is she?” Su Ruo shifted her gaze to Lian Yunduo.

At being singled out, Lian Yunduo shuddered again, her heart trembling uncontrollably.

Xi Yuechen had already scared her senseless; all she wanted was to vanish into thin air. When she heard Su Ruo’s voice and looked up, she froze.

At this moment, Lian Yunduo hated her sister Lian Yunfen to death. What had she done to deserve this? Why would her sister harm her like this?

She’d told her to seduce Regiment Commander Xi, saying his wife couldn’t hold his heart—what utter nonsense!

As their neighbor, didn’t Lian Yunfen know how terrifying Regiment Commander Xi was? And his wife—such an elegant, noble woman—what man couldn’t she hold onto?

Regret and fury churned inside Lian Yunduo. She hated Lian Yunfen so much she wanted to tear her apart. So vicious—she was her own sister! How could she do this to her? What had she ever done wrong?

“She’s my wife’s younger sister—Lian Yunduo,” Zhang Minqiang said grimly.

“Oh? Yunduo?” Su Ruo sneered, her face cold. “Then why do you look more like a lump of black mud on the ground? You’re nothing but filthy sludge without any self-awareness, yet you dared listen to your sister and set your sights where you shouldn’t. What are you and your sister thinking? A toad lusting after swan meat? With trash like you?”

Su Ruo was truly furious now. She didn’t care about Zhang Minqiang or even Xi Yuechen anymore. Her words grew sharper and harsher. One Zhou Yunzhen had already been more than enough—now another had thrown herself at them. Did they take her for dead weight?

Lian Yunduo’s face turned even uglier. No woman could stay composed after being spoken to like this—especially someone as proud as she had always been. To be reduced from lofty “clouds” to lowly mud, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

But all this humiliation was of her own making. And she didn’t dare resist Su Ruo’s words. Looking at Su Ruo, fairy-like before her, she suddenly truly felt like nothing more than a pile of dirt—people from completely different worlds.

Seeing Lian Yunduo cry so delicately, Su Ruo felt even more disgusted. She was just about to say more when, unexpectedly, Lian Yunfen arrived.

“This…”

Lian Yunfen had rushed over, and upon running upstairs and seeing the scene, her mind exploded with a loud bang. She went completely blank.

“Oh? Sister Fen is here? You really missed a good show—such a pity.”

Seeing Lian Yunfen, Su Ruo’s expression turned even colder. A smile devoid of warmth curved her lips as she spoke slowly.

Lian Yunfen’s head felt heavy. She nearly collapsed to the ground. It was over—something had gone wrong. That was the only thought left in her mind.

“Uh… Su Ruo, my dear sister, what’s going on here? Is there some kind of misunderstanding?”
Seeing everyone present, Lian Yunfen panicked. Instinctively, she tried to deny everything. If this got out, not only would Su Ruo react—her own husband would beat her to death.

“A misunderstanding?” Su Ruo sneered. “Why don’t we ask your dear sister Yunduo what kind of ‘misunderstanding’ this is? Lian Yunfen, you really went to great lengths.”

Su Ruo stepped back, wanting to lean against the door or wall—she couldn’t even be bothered to keep standing. But when she stepped back, she bumped into a solid wall of flesh. The hard sensation told her exactly whose body it was.

Instead of calming her, it only made her angrier. She’d thought this man was reliable, yet his ability to attract bees and butterflies was astonishing—bringing her nothing but trouble.

In a foul mood, Su Ruo had no desire to lean on Xi Yuechen. She pushed him away and leaned against the door instead.

Xi Yuechen hadn’t expected such cold treatment. He froze, then quickly understood—she was taking her anger out on him.

The slight relaxation he’d just felt vanished. His mood tightened again as he shot a frosty look at the person who’d implicated him—Lian Yunduo—his chest heavy with irritation.

After being choked by Su Ruo’s words and stared at coldly, Lian Yunfen felt both embarrassed and uneasy.

Of course she’d seen how miserable her sister looked and knew the plan had failed—but she was still shocked. How had her sister ended up in such a state?

“Listen to you—it must be some misunderstanding,” Lian Yunfen insisted, determined to deny everything.

Su Ruo laughed in extreme anger. “What incredible shamelessness. Battalion Commander Zhang, your wife is truly something—I almost want to applaud her. Should I praise her for staying calm under pressure, or for being… utterly shameless?”

Zhang Minqiang’s face flushed again under Su Ruo’s barbs. He knew it must be his wife who had instigated Lian Yunduo to do something she shouldn’t have. Otherwise, why would Regiment Commander Xi be so furious? Why would even the usually gentle sister-in-law speak so harshly?

He understood his wife’s character all too well. Without even thinking, he knew the problem lay with her.
