RMM -Chapter 304 The Busy Young Couple of a New Life

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 304 of 365 5

When Xi Yuechen arrived at the base with his wife and child, it was almost five o’clock.

The car drove straight toward the family housing area. Along the way, they saw quite a few soldiers. As soon as they spotted Su Ruo, voices rose one after another—“Hello, Sister-in-law!”—each call louder than the last. Every one of them was sharp and quick-witted, and Su Ruo couldn’t help feeling pleased by it all.

No one knew exactly who had spread the news that Su Ruo would be accompanying the army, but by now, everyone in the unit knew that Regiment Commander Xi’s wife was coming to live with him. The envy was unmistakable.

After all, who didn’t know that Regiment Commander Xi’s wife was a bona fide beauty? Now that Sister-in-law was joining him, Commander Xi was truly blessed. From now on, he’d be living with a lovely wife amid romance and tenderness—enough to make all the bachelors green with envy.

Whether everyone had forgotten about Zhou Yunzhen’s previous visit, or whether they were simply wary of Xi Yuechen, no one mentioned it at all. With perfect tacit understanding, they all acted as though nothing had ever happened.

Xi Yuechen was driving an off-road vehicle, and Xi Zi was sitting on Su Ruo’s lap, so no one noticed that besides Su Ruo, there was another little “main character” with them.

In fact, only a handful of people here even knew of Xi Zi’s existence. Even Li Lichen had only found out that very morning.

When Xi Yuechen was heading out earlier to pick up Su Ruo, Li Lichen had laughed and teased him, “Going to pick up your sister-in-law? Why the rush?”

Xi Yuechen hadn’t wanted to respond, but for some reason, he paused, turned his head slightly, and said lightly, “And my son.”

Then he strode away with his long legs, leaving a stunned Li Lichen standing there, utterly disheveled in the wind.

Son?! Since when did Xi Yuechen have a son?!

After arriving at the family housing building, Xi Yuechen took Xi Zi from Su Ruo’s arms and went upstairs, letting Su Ruo follow behind. Even when she tried to carry things, he wouldn’t let her.

After opening the door and letting Su Ruo inside, he handed Xi Zi back to her, told her to sit for a bit, then turned around and went downstairs again to fetch more items.

Only after Xi Yuechen left did Su Ruo press her lips together and smile. Being cared for so attentively by him made her heart feel as though it had been soaked in honey—thick, sticky, and sweet to the point of indulgence.

Seeing that Xi Zi was already asleep, Su Ruo stood up and headed toward the bedroom.

The bedroom was just as cold and minimalist as ever, almost bare of any unnecessary items, with an entirely cool-toned color scheme. Yet to Su Ruo, it felt incredibly warm. From now on, this would be her home.

There was only one large bed in the room. Su Ruo carefully laid Xi Zi down, covered him with a blanket, and then sat on the edge of the bed, taking in the surroundings.

There was only this one bedroom, so Xi Zi would be sleeping together with them. It would be more convenient to take care of him at night. A few days earlier, Shen Liang had bought a small bed for Xi Zi, saying they’d bring it over to use here, while the one at home would stay there for when they returned.

The small bed was still in the car; later in the evening, the commander would assemble it.

The curtains and bedding would need changing too—everything felt too cold and stiff, lacking any sense of home. Fortunately, just in case, she’d brought several sets of bedding and curtains with her. Su Ruo felt rather pleased with herself.

At that moment, there was some movement at the door. Su Ruo guessed that the commander had come back upstairs.

She tiptoed out and gently closed the bedroom door, afraid that noise outside might wake Xi Zi.

“I put him to sleep. That way I can tidy things up,” she explained with a smile when she turned and found Xi Yuechen looking at her.

“There’s not much stuff. Go rest for a bit,” Xi Yuechen said seriously after setting down what he was carrying. These things were better left to him.

He thought that his little woman had held Xi Zi for such a long ride and must be tired. If she was tired, she should rest—this little bit of work was no problem for him.

“I’m not tired,” Su Ruo shook her head. “I feel full of energy right now—afraid I’ll have nowhere to use it. You go carry the rest. I’ll organize these. Go on, go on.”

This was going to be her home from now on—of course she wanted to arrange it herself. Besides, she truly wasn’t tired.

Xi Yuechen knew that once Su Ruo said this, she wouldn’t go rest. He felt a bit helpless, but seeing the obvious excitement on her face warmed his heart. Fine—he’d let her have her way.

The things Xi Yuechen had brought up this time were Xi Zi’s clothes, toys, milk powder, and daily necessities. Su Ruo decided to put the clothes in the bedroom wardrobe and move the toys to the study for now—Xi Zi was still too young to use them anyway.

Looking at the pile of diapers and clothes, Su Ruo thought that just this little one’s belongings alone would take up a good portion of the wardrobe—plus her own clothes.

The thought made her laugh. Perfect—her commander’s empty wardrobe would finally be put to use. Once she and Xi Zi’s clothes were arranged, it would probably be full.

Xi Yuechen worked quickly. Before Su Ruo had finished inspecting everything, he was already back again with another large load.

Seeing him carrying so much in both hands, Su Ruo felt that her commander’s arm strength must be formidable. If he ever punched someone, it would surely hurt.

She shivered inwardly, secretly thankful that her commander wasn’t the type to commit domestic violence.

Perhaps because they were starting a new life, or perhaps because they could finally be together, both of them were brimming with energy. They worked busily side by side, and after everything was put away, Su Ruo saw it was still early and had Xi Yuechen change the curtains while she placed small decorative items in the bedroom.

After finishing up, Su Ruo noticed the empty floor and ran out again, dragging the wool carpet she’d brought into the bedroom.

Hearing the noise, Xi Yuechen instinctively looked down—and saw Su Ruo bent over, struggling to drag the heavy carpet, her small face flushed red. She looked both pitiful and funny.

“Leave it. I’ll do it,” he said, worried she might hurt herself.

“It’s fine—” Su Ruo was using all her strength just to pull the carpet, so the words came out strained. She let go and panted heavily. “Honestly, this is really tiring. Is this thing too heavy, or has my strength declined?”

She wiped her sweat, hands on her hips, then kicked the carpet. “I don’t believe I can’t handle you today.”

“Leave it. I’ll finish it in a second,” Xi Yuechen said, amused, speeding up his work. He was afraid his stubborn little wife would hurt her waist.

Sure enough, just as Su Ruo bent down again, a hand reached out from behind and grabbed the carpet first. Her hand froze midair.

Looking at Xi Yuechen’s rough, long fingers, Su Ruo rolled her eyes and turned to look at him.

“It’s just laying a carpet. It’s not like I can’t do it—just takes more effort.”

“Go do something else. I’ll lay it,” Xi Yuechen said firmly, looking at her steadily.

Su Ruo raised an eyebrow, her eyes turning sly. She leaned close to his cheek. “Alright then. Since you’re so enthusiastic, all the heavy work at home will be yours from now on. Do your best.”

She smiled mischievously, stepped back to give him space—then suddenly leaned back in and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.

“Comrade Xi Yuechen performed well. Worthy of encouragement.”

Laughing, Su Ruo ran off.

Xi Yuechen raised an eyebrow at her smug expression. He didn’t say anything, but the smile on his face made his good mood obvious.

Seeing him busy, Su Ruo trotted to the window, picked up the old curtains, and took them to the bathroom, planning to wash and store them.

After stuffing the curtains into the washing machine, she returned to the living room, inspecting it carefully and thinking about how to decorate it.

She loved flowers and plants, so that was her first idea—adding some greenery to bring life into the house.

She also wanted to place a rocking chair by the window—basking in the sun at noon, watching the sunset in the evening while waiting for her commander to come home. The thought was wonderfully poetic.

Although the windows weren’t floor-to-ceiling, the lighting was excellent, and there was a small balcony slightly higher than the living room floor. Su Ruo thought she could lay another thick, warm carpet there. On nice days, she could bring Xi Zi to bask in the sun. When he grew a little older, she could move his toys there and play with him.

But the carpet she’d brought was only enough for the bedroom. She’d need to buy another one—she’d do that in a few days, along with buying flowers.

There really wasn’t anything else they needed to buy. Shen Liang had given them more than enough.

Looking at the bare white wall behind the sofa, Su Ruo’s eyes lit up with another idea.

She could make a photo wall. She’d taken countless photos of Xi Zi—one every day—all saved on her computer. There were also photos from his hundred-day celebration, when the family had hosted a small banquet for relatives and friends. Su Heng had even hired a friend who studied photography to take pictures. After editing, the photos turned out surprisingly professional—more than good enough to display.

She’d print them when she went to buy the carpet.

While she was pondering the photo wall, Xi Yuechen came out of the bedroom.

“Finished laying it?” Su Ruo tilted her head.

“Mm. Done.”

Xi Yuechen looked at her half-lying on the sofa, her head almost pressed to the wall, her hips tilted upward—casual, yet subtly alluring.

“So fast,” Su Ruo clicked her tongue, jumped off the sofa, and ran to him. “Commander, that wall’s empty anyway. How about I make a photo wall with Xi Zi’s pictures?”

“Anything’s fine. As long as you like it,” Xi Yuechen said. He truly had no objections.

“Figures,” Su Ruo shrugged.

“Oh right—the living room curtains need changing too. And Xi Zi’s bed has to be assembled.”

These were things she couldn’t handle alone—free labor had to be fully utilized.

The young couple stayed busy for a long time, thoroughly enjoying themselves. Only when night had fully fallen did they place Xi Zi into the small bed his father had assembled, then snuggle close together and drift into deep sleep.
