“Even so, the moment I think about Zhou Yunzhen constantly scheming about how to replace me and take over my commanding officer, my chest just feels unbearably tight.”
Su Ruo spoke in a muffled, irritated tone, clearly distressed.
“That’s true. Chief Xi is obviously yours. What’s this woman barging in halfway trying to do? Competing for Chief Xi—has her brain been caught in a door? Setting aside how immoral it is to covet someone else’s marriage, just one look at Chief Xi should’ve made her back off. Instead, it’s like she’s been injected with chicken blood—retreating never crosses her mind. The more setbacks she faces, the braver she gets.”
He Wen had been holding it in for a long time too; she looked even angrier than Su Ruo, the one actually involved.
She had always valued her friends more than herself. If she was wronged, she would fight back without hesitation; if a friend was wronged, she would fight even more fiercely, without a second thought.
Back when Duan Wei ran into trouble with Zhao Nuanxun, He Wen had been so furious she nearly lost her mind. If no one had stopped her, she would’ve taken a knife to Mo Qi long ago.
That matter had finally passed, Duan Wei had gradually recovered, and now something had happened to Su Ruo—another round of this melodramatic nonsense. Fine. This time, she truly couldn’t hold back anymore.
Letting it slide once was one thing. Letting it happen again—did they take her for a turtle hiding in its shell?
That was why, if Su Ruo hadn’t stopped her earlier and insisted on “outsmarting” Zhou Yunzhen instead, He Wen would’ve already gone looking for Zhou Yunzhen with a knife.
So when Su Ruo mentioned she was going out with Zhou Yunzhen and wanted to give her a little “surprise,” He Wen immediately volunteered to take charge, declaring it would be absolutely spectacular—something that fox spirit would remember for the rest of her life.
And so, fired up as if pumped full of adrenaline, she managed to arrange everything within just an hour. One had to admit… she was seriously talented.
Duan Wei smiled and patted the overly excited He Wen, saying helplessly, “I say, sis, can you maybe tone down that bull-like temper of yours a little? Being so impulsive isn’t good for your health, you know.”
“Go away. How would you know? Haven’t I grown up just fine all these years? You think I’m too rough, don’t you?”
He Wen slapped Duan Wei’s hand away and raised an elegant eyebrow, her lips pursed in dissatisfaction.
“Not at all. I’m offering sincere advice—it just doesn’t sound nice. You’re the one who always likes to assume the worst of my good intentions.”
Duan Wei pretended to look pitiful, blinking her eyes as she complained.
“Gross. Get that face out of here—I won’t be able to sleep tonight,” He Wen shuddered and said disdainfully.
“Hey, you two really have some nerve. My marriage is in crisis, and you’re acting like it has nothing to do with you?”
Su Ruo couldn’t stand their antics anymore and finally interrupted.
“Tsk, Ruo-ruo, you’ve really got some nerve saying that. Even if the sun rose in the west, your marriage would still be perfectly safe. That iceberg of yours—go on, encourage him to cheat. See if he even has the interest.”
Duan Wei shot Su Ruo a look full of disdain. Stop pretending—I don’t believe for a second you’re actually worried.
Su Ruo snorted proudly at Duan Wei’s words, utterly unconcerned. “Of course. Anyone branded with my name, Su Ruo’s, can’t be lacking. Who else would he ever fall for besides me? Even so, it still makes me unhappy. This Zhou Yunzhen is just too irritating.”
Su Ruo wasn’t worried—she just couldn’t help feeling annoyed. Having the person you share a pillow with constantly coveted by another woman—talk about a sour, maddening feeling.
And that was normal. Put this on any woman and she probably wouldn’t stay calm either. My man is living just fine in my home—what are you, some random nobody, trying to seduce him for? Can’t stand seeing others live well?
That depends on whether I allow it.
Territorial sovereignty—sacred and inviolable! Do you demons and monsters understand that?
“If you ask me, you shouldn’t even take her that seriously. Right now, timing, location, and people are all on our side. Getting rid of her would be a matter of minutes. Didn’t you say you’ve been bored lately? Perfect—she delivered herself to you to kill time. What’s there to be annoyed about? Cheerfully tug your son along, play with her a bit—how satisfying is that? Just treat it as entertainment.”
Duan Wei’s words were sharp and cold, reducing Zhou Yunzhen to nothing—but hearing them finally made Su Ruo feel a bit better.
“You’re right. I just hate how she’s clinging on like this. As for any real threat—she doesn’t have that ability.”
Su Ruo scoffed, her mood sour just hearing the name.
“Then that’s it. If you really can’t stand her, how about I find someone to properly teach her a lesson for you?”
He Wen couldn’t help chiming in. In her view, flies that buzz around relentlessly should just be slapped dead—then the world would be quiet.
“Duan Wei just finished talking, and you’re already shouting about fighting and killing again? I told you—slowly. She’s not brainless. If you take people straight to her and she bites back, what then? How are you going to explain that to your family? And if you really hurt her badly, how will this end? Just because someone takes a loss once doesn’t mean they’ll keep swallowing it. She’s from a military family too, with a fierce side to her temper. If you really push her into a corner, she’ll start biting blindly. Then how are we supposed to keep watching this show?”
Su Ruo frowned, disagreeing. Even a rabbit bites when cornered—let alone Zhou Yunzhen. It wasn’t that she feared Zhou Yunzhen causing trouble, but less trouble was always better. If Zhou Yunzhen really went all out, things would be hard to clean up.
Besides, killing someone outright is boring. If you want to torment someone, you do it slowly—let her step by step fall into despair without realizing it, believing she holds the upper hand, only to discover in the end that she’s nothing more than a jumping clown. For someone like her, that kind of collapse would be unforgettable—and would make it hard for her to ever recover.
Zhou Yunzhen had made her uncomfortable for so long; surely she had to pay a price. Suffer a bit more, and she’d learn that the world doesn’t revolve around her whims. Otherwise, too much confidence turns into arrogance, and arrogance leads to provoking others.
He Wen wilted after hearing Su Ruo’s reasoning, sighed, and slumped over the table, looking utterly dejected.
“I was just talking. Why take it so seriously? You’re right—better to let her bounce around a bit more than slap her dead in one go. It’s more fun to watch.”
As if suddenly thinking of something, He Wen straightened up and stared at Su Ruo. “By the way, you absolutely can’t let that woman get close to Chief Xi. What if she resorts to dirty tricks? She’s set on seducing your man—she’ll stop at nothing. What if Chief Xi slips up and gets bewitched?”
He Wen felt that although Zhou Yunzhen appeared aloof and perfect on the surface, she was rotten inside. Otherwise, how could she fixate on someone else’s marriage and scheme day after day to steal another woman’s man? People like that were the worst—the more perfect they pretended to be, the darker they were inside. Since she’d set her sights on Chief Xi, she definitely wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted.
And no matter how cold Chief Xi was, he was still a man. A woman with status and looks throwing herself at him—what if he fell for it by accident?
“Hmph, I’d actually like her to try seducing my man—but she’d need the chance. Right now, even I, his legally wedded wife and the mother of his child, can’t see him. If she has the ability, let her go seduce him.”
Su Ruo said disdainfully, fingers wrapped around her cup. Truth be told, she missed her chief terribly too… she really wanted to see him.
Seeing Su Ruo’s resentful-housewife expression, Duan Wei burst out laughing. “What’s the rush? All these years, haven’t you and your chief always been living apart? Besides, won’t you be joining the army soon? You’ve made it through all this time—can’t you endure these last couple of months?”
Su Ruo shot her a sideways glance and snorted. “What do you know? Do you understand what it means to guard an empty bed alone? Easy for you to talk—you really don’t understand the darkness of night when you live in daylight.”
He Wen, who was drinking coffee, nearly choked. She struggled to swallow before exclaiming,
“Can you not exaggerate so much? You just married and had a kid early—what’s there to brag about? Guarding an empty bed, really? You already have a son—what more do you want? I’m telling you, put away that resentful mood and enjoy these last few days of solitude. Otherwise, once you join the army, your chief—right in his prime, strong as a wolf, having gone without meat for so long—won’t he tear you apart and swallow you whole? Don’t come crying later that you can’t take it.”
He Wen had always been blunt and unrestrained. The moment those words came out, Su Ruo and Duan Wei both sprayed their drinks, coughing until their faces turned red.
“He Wen, can you at least put a lock on your mouth?” Duan Wei scolded, blushing furiously. That was really too much—couldn’t she keep it clean?
“Exactly. He Wen, that was way too bold and shameless. But my chief excels in every way—why would I complain as the beneficiary? I can’t wait for my chief to break his fast.”
Su Ruo said with a wicked grin, red lips slightly curved, eyes lifting at the corners. Despite saying such words, her dark eyes were clear and bright, shining openly, giving her an oddly righteous yet devilish beauty.
Duan Wei’s heart skipped a beat at the unintentional charm Su Ruo radiated. Oh no, this was dangerous. She was used to Su Ruo’s poised, radiant image—who knew that once she turned wild and unrestrained, she’d be so bewitching? Even she, a woman, couldn’t help but feel moved.
So it really was true—when your face is beautiful enough, you can do whatever you want. Truly captivating in every way. With a Su Ruo like this, how could Chief Xi not be tempted? Maybe he really would flip her over and devour her again and again.
“Ahem, stop right there. You’re getting more outrageous by the second. Su Ruo, even if you’re married, you still need to know when to be reserved. You’re way too unrestrained—I, a pure maiden, can’t take this.”
Duan Wei snapped back to herself and complained unhappily. These two were just too improper—where was even a shred of ladylike decorum?
“Ruo-ruo, you really have no shame,” He Wen added. Compared to her, what she’d said earlier was nothing.
“Tch, you can say it but I can’t? Yours was just fantasy—mine is the truth. Huge difference, okay?”
Su Ruo snorted proudly, leaving He Wen and Duan Wei exchanging speechless looks.
