Rebirth: A Military Marriage 10 min read 257 of 365 39

“Big Sister Zhang, you can’t just let this fox spirit off so easily! If you do, what about Lele? She’ll definitely keep seducing your Old Zhao! These slutty foxes only have their eyes on your husband’s money—we absolutely cannot let her go!”

The woman behind her shouted loudly, pointing straight at the disheveled Zhou Yunzhen. Her face was flushed red with rage, as if she were beside herself.

Her words reminded Sister Zhang, whose earlier momentum had begun to wane. Sister Zhang immediately widened her eyes, planted her hands on her hips, and started cursing at the top of her lungs:

“Everyone come take a look! This shameless woman seduces a married man and destroys other people’s families! A disgraceful fox spirit! My son has only just graduated from elementary school—how are we, a mother and child alone, supposed to go on living? I can’t live anymore…”

At first she was cursing, but by the end she sounded heartbroken. She even began choking back sobs, wiping away tears, crying so pitifully that she looked utterly miserable.

Ordinarily, people are inclined to sympathize with the weak. The passersby who had been watching the spectacle with interest moments ago now saw how pitiful this woman looked and began to feel compassion for her. They started pointing and whispering at Zhou Yunzhen, who stood to the side with an imposing presence. It was clear they had completely believed the two women’s story, and the looks they cast at Zhou Yunzhen were filled with contempt.

Scenes of a wife publicly confronting a mistress were no longer rare, so everyone reacted with practiced familiarity. They had already decided that Zhou Yunzhen was the fox spirit who had seduced another woman’s husband and ruined her family. She was young, beautiful, and well put together—clearly “qualified” to be a mistress. Her clothes were elegant and obviously expensive; one didn’t even need to ask to know they cost a fortune. What else could it be? Surely she had set her sights on the man’s money and become the kept lover of some old man.

“Ah, society these days is really getting worse and worse,” an elderly woman who had been watching for a long time sighed deeply. “Why don’t people know how to behave themselves anymore? Such a pretty young girl, yet she’s fallen so low. Living an honest life would be so much better—why insist on destroying someone else’s family? Ah…”

Shaking her head, the old woman left, still muttering words like “moral decay” and “shamelessness.”

Zhou Yunzhen heard all of this. The fire in her chest surged violently, nearly burning up into her head. She wanted nothing more than to teach these two women—who had come out of nowhere—a harsh lesson. She was being subjected to such humiliation for no reason at all. A fox spirit? When had she ever seduced anyone’s husband? Who did they think Zhou Yunzhen was? This was utterly ridiculous! To actually come after her to settle accounts—were their eyes just for decoration?

But this was a busy public place. People were coming and going, and quite a crowd had already gathered to watch the farce. In their eyes, Zhou Yunzhen had already become the shameless mistress who broke up someone else’s family. The disdain on their faces felt like needles piercing her skin, yet she couldn’t lash out. At this moment, she had no choice but to compromise and let them vent their madness on her. No matter what she said, public opinion would always tilt toward those two women. If she struck back, it would only confirm her image as an arrogant, shameless fox spirit.

“You’ve got the wrong person. I don’t know your husband. Please let me leave.”

Zhou Yunzhen said coldly, her voice sharp.

No matter what, she had to get out of here first. Being falsely accused, subjected to the scorn and mockery of strangers—and the eggs smeared all over her—she knew she must look utterly miserable. There was dried egg white on her face, pulling tightly at her skin, and the stench of raw egg clung to her body, wafting into her nose until she nearly gagged.

But the two women were determined to cause trouble. Afraid she might get away, both of them grabbed hold of her at the same time, refusing to let her leave.

“What, you’ve got the nerve to seduce men but not the nerve to admit it now? Aren’t you just after money? I have money! I can give it to you! But you even instigated that heartless bastard to divorce me—what kind of poisonous intentions do you have? I still have a son! What’s he supposed to do in the future? How can a woman’s heart be so vicious? Have you no shame at all? And you still want to leave? Impossible! Today I must demand justice for myself!”

It was still Sister Zhang. She clutched Zhou Yunzhen’s clothes tightly with both hands, crying and wailing with snot and tears streaming down her face.

“Young lady,” another older man spoke up, addressing Zhou Yunzhen, who was on the verge of breaking down. “You’re young and pretty—what could you possibly lack? Why insist on seducing someone else’s husband? What are you after? Isn’t it just money? Just work honestly and steadily—why degrade yourself like this and even destroy someone else’s family?”

His tone sounded earnest and admonishing, yet the expression on his face was a strange mix of pity and disdain. Though his words seemed like advice, he looked more like someone enjoying the spectacle.

“That’s right! Old Zhao from Sister Zhang’s family is already in his fifties, yet this fox spirit is still dead set on sticking with him. Isn’t that deliberately seducing him? My poor old friend—she worked hard her entire life alongside Old Zhao, and now in the end, that bit of property is going to be swallowed up by this woman! There’s no justice in this world! Heaven has no eyes!”

The woman beside Sister Zhang also began crying dramatically, shaking the corner of Zhou Yunzhen’s clothes hard as she spoke.

Zhou Yunzhen nearly ground her teeth to dust. She was on the verge of losing control. If this weren’t such a crowded place, she would have “properly entertained” these two women long ago. Were they blind? Couldn’t they tell right from wrong—or even recognize people? They were catching a mistress and somehow caught her instead, dumping such enormous humiliation on her out of nowhere!

Her hands clenched and trembled, her lips nearly bitten through. These two inexplicable women had gone far beyond the line.

“I’ll warn you one last time—let go! You’ve got the wrong person!”

Zhou Yunzhen forcefully suppressed her fury and murderous rage, issuing a cold warning. If these two women still didn’t know when to stop, she wouldn’t be polite anymore.

But they had no intention of reading the situation. They continued tugging at her clothes, clearly determined not to let things end.

Then, in the next second, before the surrounding crowd could even see what happened, there were two loud thuds. The two women fell heavily to the ground, crying out in pain.

It was obvious—Zhou Yunzhen had taken them down. The movement was so swift that many people didn’t even catch it clearly.

“Ow! It hurts so bad! Ah—my bones are broken! Fox spirit, how dare you hit me! Help! Murder! The fox spirit is killing people!”

Naturally, these two women weren’t the type to take a loss quietly. Having been suddenly thrown down, they were in pain but immediately reacted, struggling and crying loudly, their mouths even more vicious than before.

The two women wailed hysterically, instantly drawing even louder accusations from the surrounding onlookers.

Someone couldn’t help but curse, “Hey! She’s lashing out in shame now! After doing such shameless things, she even dares to hit people! Where’s your upbringing gone, huh?”

No sooner had he finished scolding than another woman’s voice rang out, full of disdain.

“Exactly. Acting all high and mighty—aren’t you just a worn-out slut? Tsk.”

There were all kinds of voices, none of them defending Zhou Yunzhen. The noise was chaotic and deafening.

Zhou Yunzhen trembled with rage. She had struck those two women, but she couldn’t strike everyone around her. She shouted angrily:

“I already said it—they’ve got the wrong person! Why are you all blindly joining in? Whatever kind of person I am, it’s not for you people to judge!”

Born into a distinguished family and tempered in a military academy, Zhou Yunzhen had a naturally proud temperament. Provoked again and again like this, how could she endure it? She lashed out sarcastically at the crowd, then turned, intending to leave.

It was best to get away from this cesspool as soon as possible. Otherwise, who knew how many more times those two mad dogs would bite her—and how long these nosy onlookers would keep making trouble.

She was furious, wronged, and humiliated, itching to tear those two mad dogs apart. But she couldn’t. They could afford to mistake someone, but she couldn’t afford to beat people in public. If word of this spread and reached her father’s ears, it definitely wouldn’t end lightly. He would think she was throwing her weight around and fighting in the street—and she would absolutely not come out of it unscathed.

With her anger surging yet unable to vent it, Zhou Yunzhen felt stifled and enraged, but utterly helpless. She had no choice but to swallow this bitter loss—just treat it as being bitten by dogs when stepping outside.

However, just as Zhou Yunzhen was about to turn away, someone suddenly grabbed hold of her lower leg.

“Someone help! Everyone, please judge this for me! This damned fox spirit committed violence in the street—someone’s going to die! You can’t leave! Don’t even think about running away! You stole my man and beat me up—do you think this will end so easily today? Is there no justice left in this world?!”

Sister Zhang clung tightly to Zhou Yunzhen’s legs, preventing her from moving an inch, crying and screaming as if she would rather die than let her go.

Seeing this, the other woman seized the chance to scramble back up and rush over, cursing nonstop, looking as if she wanted to devour Zhou Yunzhen alive.

Then, in the very next second, Zhou Yunzhen’s hair was grabbed again—this time with even greater force, as if the woman intended to rip her scalp off.

With one hand yanking Zhou Yunzhen’s hair, the woman raised her other hand to slap her in the face. But how could Zhou Yunzhen allow herself to be slapped in public? Her legs were trapped, but her hands were free. Once again, she swiftly seized the woman’s descending hand.

This time, however, it wasn’t nearly as easy as before. The woman’s hand was caught and couldn’t be pulled free. In desperation, she actually opened her mouth and bit down.

She bit with brutal force, instantly breaking the skin on Zhou Yunzhen’s fair wrist. Blood began to flow at once.

Zhou Yunzhen cried out in pain and quickly released her grip, yanking her wrist free from the woman’s mouth. She clutched the wound tightly with her other hand. The fury on her face turned into pain as she glared at the woman who had bitten her, her eyes filled with dark menace.

The woman had been hurt badly when she was thrown down earlier and was already burning with rage. How could she care about Zhou Yunzhen’s expression or gaze? The moment her hands were free, she immediately lunged again, clawing at Zhou Yunzhen’s face.

Though Zhou Yunzhen’s attention was on her injured wrist, she hadn’t ignored her surroundings. Seeing the woman attack again, she didn’t have time to counter and could only dodge quickly.

Her movement was swift. When the woman’s nails slashed down, Zhou Yunzhen had already moved her face away—but in doing so, she exposed her pale, slender neck.

Almost in the next instant, several bloody scratches appeared across Zhou Yunzhen’s fair neck.
