RMM -Chapter 242 Zhou Yun Zhen Pays a Visit

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 8 min read 242 of 365 43

Since the day Xi Yuechen returned to the military, he hadn’t come back home, though he still made sure to call Su Ruo every day.

Regarding Xi Yuechen’s eagerness to immerse himself in the army, leaving home without looking back, Su Ruo pursed her lips. Was he just pent up at home for too long, or did he feel guilty about idling away all this time? Anyway, once he went back, he was like a fish in water.

Sigh, never mind. First, let’s raise our son to be healthy and strong. Later on, he can join the commander.

The weather was getting warmer, and the wind was gradually dying down. Seeing the nice weather, Su Ruo bundled Xi Zi up and strolled with him in the small garden to enjoy the sunlight.

Spring had arrived, and the flowers and plants in the garden were starting to turn green. Some early-spring flowers were even budding, making the garden look lively and vibrant.

Su Ruo carried Xi Zi around, moving from one spot to another, chattering nonstop. If you listened carefully, she was actually explaining all the plants and flowers to Xi Zi.

“For example, son, open your eyes and see what color this flower will bloom in. Look at that flower, this is its name, and this flower has an interesting origin…”

Even after so long, Su Ruo was still full of enthusiasm. Carrying Xi Zi for such a long time didn’t make her feel tired; the sunshine, the flourishing plants, and the lively atmosphere made her heart feel light and almost ready to fly.

It was at this moment that Zhou Yun Zhen called Su Ruo.

“Ruo Ruo, your phone’s been ringing for quite a while. Check it—maybe it’s something important.”

Su Ruo had just finished explaining the flowers to Xi Zi and had started softly humming a lullaby when she heard Shen Liang walk into the garden holding her phone.

“Who is it? Let me see.”

Su Ruo handed Xi Zi to Shen Liang and took the phone from him, murmuring to herself.

The phone rang again. Glancing at the caller ID, Su Ruo raised an eyebrow and smiled—it was her. They hadn’t been in touch for a long time, and she wondered what could be so urgent.

“Hello, Yun Zhen.”

Shen Liang, seeing Su Ruo answer the call, walked into the living room holding Xi Zi, not wanting to feel awkward nearby.

Su Ruo smiled helplessly. There was nothing to avoid; it wasn’t that important. Shen Liang was just too considerate.

“Why the sudden call?”

Su Ruo withdrew her gaze and asked with a cheerful tone.

On the other end, Zhou Yun Zhen heard Su Ruo’s bright, sunny voice, and immediately felt uncomfortable.

Somehow, she no longer wanted to see Su Ruo happy. Even hearing such a cheerful voice annoyed her. What was there to be happy about? Was Su Ruo’s life really that perfect and joyful?

But Zhou Yun Zhen couldn’t change it. No matter how grim her expression, Su Ruo’s voice remained as gentle and warm as ever. Just hearing it made one feel instantly uplifted.

“Nothing much, just thought of you, so I called to check in.”

“I’m doing well. What’s there to worry about?” Su Ruo sat on a nearby chair, fiddling with the tea set.

“Actually, there’s something I’ve been thinking about. It’s a bit embarrassing. I wasn’t very proper, so I wanted to call and apologize.”

Su Ruo frowned, puzzled. What had Zhou Yun Zhen done that was improper? She couldn’t think of anything.

“What is it? Tell me.”

Zhou Yun Zhen sighed and slowly said, “It’s about the full-month celebration for your son. I didn’t even properly look at the little one and was only focused on my own feelings. Thinking back, I feel guilty. Look at me—an adult acting so petty.”

Su Ruo suddenly remembered—last time, Zhou Yun Zhen hadn’t met Xi Zi. For someone like Zhou Yun Zhen, who liked perfection, even the smallest mistake would be unbearable. But honestly, it wasn’t a big deal. At that time, no one was in the mood to look at a baby. Besides, the commander had taken Xi Zi afterward, so even if she wanted to, she couldn’t see him. If Zhou Yun Zhen hadn’t mentioned it, Su Ruo wouldn’t have thought about it at all.

“It’s fine. Nothing to feel guilty about. Not just you, lots of people didn’t get to see my baby. The full-month celebration was just an excuse for everyone to gather. Don’t think too much. There will be other opportunities.”

Su Ruo laughed lightly, brushing it off. It wasn’t a big deal, no need to dwell on it or feel guilty for so long.

“Exactly. That’s why I thought, today I’m off work, and since I’m free, I want to come see your baby. You don’t know how much I want to see him. Judging by his looks, he must be adorable. I just don’t know if you’d welcome me…”

Zhou Yun Zhen’s tone shifted from excitement to uncertainty. She really wanted to see Xi Zi, which made Su Ruo laugh softly.

“Oh, you’re really making a big deal out of it. It’s nothing. But if you want to come, just come. I have nothing to do, feeling quite bored. You can come see my son and keep me company.”

After achieving her goal, Zhou Yun Zhen’s face finally showed a faint smile. It wasn’t entirely clear or warm, though; anyone seeing it might feel uneasy, a stark contrast to her usual demeanor.

“Okay, I’ll come over later,” Zhou Yun Zhen said, nodding. Suddenly, she remembered, “If you have time, tell the guard at your entrance. Otherwise, I might not get in.”

Of course. As the residence of a senior political figure, security and confidentiality couldn’t be taken lightly. Zhou Yun Zhen had never been there before, and the guards didn’t know her, so she wouldn’t be let in casually. She had to rely on Su Ruo to notify the guards.

“Sure, no problem. Just come over later. But remember, don’t buy anything. My house is almost full. We don’t need anything. Just come, that’s enough.”

Su Ruo reminded Zhou Yun Zhen not to bring gifts for Xi Zi. It wasn’t just politeness—there really were too many things at home. Items bought over time and gifts from others had piled up, not just at the main residence but also at the military compound. A small child couldn’t possibly use so much stuff. Any extra would just go to waste.

After hanging up, Su Ruo looked at the garden and realized it was boring without Xi Zi. Explaining the plants to an empty stroller was pointless.

“Mom, a friend is coming over later to see Xi Zi.”

Entering the living room, Su Ruo told Shen Liang, who was happily chatting with Xi Zi, and sat down beside them.

“Great. Your grandfather and father aren’t home, so it’ll be easier for your friend. By the way, which friend is it?”

It wasn’t surprising that Shen Liang asked. Su Ruo had been close with them since childhood, so any “small matter” was never hidden. Besides, her circle of friends had been set since childhood. Shen Liang knew all of them.

“This friend? You don’t know her. I met her later. She seems nice, so we started keeping in touch. She’s from the compound.”

Su Ruo explained cheerfully. Zhou Yun Zhen was visiting for the first time, so she wanted to make a good impression on her grandmother, giving a “preemptive warning.”

“A new friend?” Shen Liang asked in surprise. He thought Su Ruo only had a few childhood friends.

“Yes, a new friend. So just letting you know. This is her first visit, and it’s not as casual as He Wen and the others.”

“Okay, when she comes, make sure you host her well. If I’m around, she might feel awkward.”

Shen Liang nodded seriously. Su Ruo rarely left the house. It was boring for him. If a friend was willing to come see her, she should. Having company made it less lonely.

When Zhou Yun Zhen arrived at the residence, the guards had already been informed. They just checked her credentials and let her in.

“You finally came! I’ve been waiting so long,”

Su Ruo said in an exaggerated “complaining” tone, though her smile made it sound like playful teasing.

“Yes, my fault for being slow. Poor Miss Su had to suffer such inconvenience. You deserve a scolding,” Zhou Yun Zhen replied, smiling as well.

Su Ruo’s expression fell slightly when she noticed the gift bag in Zhou Yun Zhen’s hand.

“I told you not to bring anything, but you still brought all this?”

Zhou Yun Zhen shrugged helplessly. “Just these two items. How can I come empty-handed for my first visit? People would laugh if they saw me. It’s not too valuable—just a token of greeting.”

Su Ruo thought it made sense. Zhou Yun Zhen wasn’t like He Wen and the others who were familiar with the house. Coming empty-handed would feel awkward for a first-time visitor who didn’t know anyone at home.
