When Su Ruo mentioned Zhou Yun Zhen’s name, a few people present subtly changed their expressions.
Feng Weijia frowned slightly, a trace of displeasure flashing across his face. He remembered that woman—and of course, he hadn’t forgotten his dislike for her. Why was she calling at this moment? Could it be that she intended to come over?
Damn it, he really didn’t want to see that woman.
Duan Wei glanced at He Wen, whose expression had suddenly cooled, and curiosity got the better of her. She couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong? Who is this Yun Zhen? Why do you look so displeased?”
He Wen glanced at Su Ruo, who was still on the phone, and quietly explained briefly how Zhou Yun Zhen had helped Su Ruo. After a few words, Duan Wei was even more puzzled.
“But this Zhou Yun Zhen saved Xi Zi’s life. Why would you react like that?”
Duan Wei noticed that He Wen’s tone when mentioning Zhou Yun Zhen carried a hint of displeasure. By her nature, since Zhou Yun Zhen had helped Su Ruo, she should have liked her, right? Why the indifferent, “out of sight, out of mind” attitude?
“I’ve met her later myself. My first impression wasn’t very pleasant—something about her felt off. Feng Weijia had met her too and disliked her even more, saying she was pretentious and fake. The more I thought about it, the more I agreed—she comes across as too perfect, which makes her seem insincere.”
He Wen spoke carefully, lowering his voice to prevent Su Ruo from overhearing. She hadn’t forgotten that Su Ruo had quite a favorable impression of Zhou Yun Zhen. If Su Ruo knew she was speaking ill of her, she would certainly not be pleased.
After He Wen finished, she glanced at Feng Weijia. Sure enough, displeasure flickered across his face—it seemed he truly disliked Zhou Yun Zhen.
But why call now? Could she be intending to come here?
He Wen and Feng Weijia shared the thought silently.
Xi Yuechen seemed either oblivious or simply indifferent to all that was happening around him. His expression was cold and unreadable, as if none of it concerned him.
By now, he remembered Zhou Yun Zhen’s name—after hearing it from Su Ruo, Xi Yuechen finally connected it to Zhou Yun Zhen being Zhou Tingzhang’s daughter.
But what did it matter to him? Who she was, or whose daughter she was—Xi Yuechen didn’t care.
That didn’t mean Gu Jiawei was indifferent. Sitting opposite Feng Weijia, he could clearly read the subtle changes in his expression and couldn’t help but smirk. Who was this woman? He’d never heard of her. Why did Feng Weijia look so impatient? Could she be one of his former flings?
No wonder Gu Jiawei thought that way—Feng Weijia had a history of playing around recklessly, so this reaction made sense. If it were an old flame chasing after him, it would be understandable.
But if it was one of Feng Weijia’s past flings, why would the call go to Su Ruo’s phone? That didn’t make sense.
Tsk tsk, what did it matter to him? Why bother? Gu Jiawei immediately dismissed the thought. He silently told himself that as long as it didn’t concern Xi Yuechen, he had little interest.
Only if she were Xi Yuechen’s potential love interest would it be worth watching—haha.
Gu Jiawei thought mischievously. Unexpectedly, he accidentally guessed correctly: Zhou Yun Zhen was indeed coming for Xi Yuechen.
The reason Zhou Yun Zhen called Su Ruo wasn’t hard to guess—it was for Xi Zi’s full-month celebration.
Su Ruo had called Zhou Yun Zhen beforehand to inform her, but she hadn’t expected her to come. There weren’t any familiar faces here, and besides, last time she and Feng Weijia had a disagreement.
Originally, Zhou Yun Zhen didn’t plan to attend either, but in the phone call, she had only said she would check the time. Yet this morning, she changed her mind. Why not go? She wasn’t showing off herself—it was Su Ruo inviting her. To refuse would embarrass Su Ruo.
And so the call happened.
In truth, Zhou Yun Zhen’s plan wasn’t really about this. She had been thinking of how to get in touch with Xi Yuechen for days, but couldn’t come up with a good method. She couldn’t ask her father to help either. When the opportunity arose, she seized it.
Zhou Yun Zhen was quick-witted. Instead of hiding and racking her brain over contacting Xi Yuechen, she decided to take the initiative. As long as she could meet him, their connection would begin naturally. Methods could be perfected later; the more they met, the more familiar they would become.
Xi Zi’s full-month banquet—Xi Yuechen would surely attend, right? If so, why not go?
After hanging up, Zhou Yun Zhen carefully dressed, repeatedly checking her outfit before leaving home.
Although she couldn’t compete with Su Ruo in looks, she was equal or superior in other areas. Her temperament and composure were her strengths.
Zhou Yun Zhen knew her strengths. Anyone could be attracted to her if she wished. Someone like Xi Yuechen, compared to the bright and lovely Su Ruo, would likely prefer her mature and gentle demeanor.
Furthermore, after giving birth, Su Ruo would no longer be as slender and radiant as before. Zhou Yun Zhen had seen many postpartum women at the hospital—their figures deformed and complexions dull. Compared to a carefully dressed herself, even though older, she was confident she could outshine Su Ruo in elegance and presence.
What a great opportunity—how could she not seize it?
When Zhou Yun Zhen arrived, the banquet hadn’t ended. Seeing so many high-profile guests, she felt a pang of discomfort.
It was just a baby, after all. Was it really necessary to make such a big deal? Didn’t they worry about what others might say?
Who couldn’t have children? Yet Su Ruo seemed to be hailed as if she had accomplished something extraordinary.
Zhou Yun Zhen recognized a few important figures present. After the initial surprise, she became unhappy. She understood perfectly well: with such a grand full-month banquet, the identity of Su Ruo’s son was obvious. And with her son, Su Ruo’s status naturally elevated as well.
In an instant, Zhou Yun Zhen realized that if Su Ruo gained everyone’s recognition, what room was left for herself? To take everything away wouldn’t be easy. Give up? Impossible! Take a step back? No. With her own capital, she would never be a behind-the-scenes woman.
Gritting her teeth, her eyes glinted with determination. No matter how much recognition Su Ruo received, whatever belonged to Zhou Yun Zhen, she would not give up. As long as there was a chance, she would become Xi Yuechen’s rightful woman—his wife!
Glancing at Su Feng, who looked smug nearby, Zhou Yun Zhen sneered silently. Whether this banquet was arranged for his daughter or not, enjoy it for now. Soon, Su Ruo would have to make way—she, Zhou Yun Zhen, would also enjoy such glory one day.
When the attendant led Zhou Yun Zhen to Su Ruo’s private room, Gu Jiawei was about to leave.
They had been sitting long enough; Xi Yuechen’s wife and child had seen enough. There was no need to linger. A casual chat with these young people would suffice. Continuing to sit would be boring—better to go back to other work. He still had plenty on his plate.
“Time’s almost up. I’ll leave first—got things to do.”
Gu Jiawei turned to Xi Yuechen, said goodbye, and without waiting for a reply, stood up to bid farewell to Su Ruo and the others.
Su Ruo stood and tried to persuade him to stay, but Gu Jiawei was determined. She smiled and said that if there was a chance in the future, Xi Yuechen could bring her to meet again—today there simply wasn’t time.
Unable to persuade him, Su Ruo gave up. Others, however, secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Phew, finally leaving! Much easier now.
Although Xi Yuechen remained, it was still better than having both of them there exerting pressure. Besides, Xi Yuechen had interacted with them a few times, much easier to handle than meeting Gu Jiawei for the first time.
Xi Yuechen didn’t try to stop him. Nodding, he let Gu Jiawei leave. Su Ruo couldn’t say anything—she knew Xi Yuechen well enough. He wasn’t the type to perform for appearances.
He was friends with them and knew them well—nothing bad would come of it. At worst, they could meet again later.
Just as Gu Jiawei turned a corner in the corridor, he ran into Zhou Yun Zhen.
Neither recognized the other. They didn’t stop, walking past, slightly avoiding each other. Gu Jiawei covered his nose with his hand, frowned, and quickened his pace.
He disliked perfume, especially the strong scent of the woman who just passed. Too pungent.
Gu Jiawei didn’t like perfume, and Zhou Yun Zhen’s today was strong. No wonder he reacted so negatively. Everyone knew Gu Jiawei was extremely picky.
After leaving the private room, Su Ruo saw it was time to feed Xi Zi. She told Xi Yuechen and stood, smiling, excusing herself to go handle her son’s feeding in a small partition within the room.
Although she brought formula, nothing could compare to breast milk. Whenever possible, Su Ruo preferred not to use formula. There were no outsiders present, so she didn’t feel embarrassed. After all, it wasn’t in front of them.
Just as Su Ruo began feeding Xi Zi, the private room door opened again.
Zhou Yun Zhen pushed the door open. Looking around, the vast room seemed almost empty—she only saw one person.
Her heart raced. He was here!
At this moment, everyone looked toward the door. Apart from He Wen and Feng Weijia, who knew her, and Xi Yuechen, who had some impression of her, nobody recognized her.
Xi Yuechen glanced casually toward the door, then quickly looked away, not even clearly seeing Zhou Yun Zhen’s face.
But for Zhou Yun Zhen, Xi Yuechen being present was already her greatest joy.
