“Son? Oh… that’s… good… very good.”
After a pause, Zhou Yun Zhen spoke softly, her voice rough and dry, each word seeming to float lightly in the air.
Su Ruo was watching Xi Yuechen walk out with a diaper in hand, her eyes curved into crescent moons with a smile. She didn’t notice Zhou Yun Zhen’s change in tone, her attention completely focused on Xi Yuechen.
From being awkward at first, Xi Yuechen had now become quite adept at changing Xi Zi’s diapers—his movements swift yet gentle, careful not to wake the baby.
Su Ruo had gone from finding it funny to feeling calmly amused. Still, every time she watched Xi Yuechen change the diaper, she couldn’t help but grin—this was one of her few forms of entertainment…
It wasn’t that she was so bored; the scene of Xi Yuechen changing a diaper was strangely surreal. Despite performing such a down-to-earth task, his cold, aloof aura and serious, expressionless demeanor made the image incongruously comical, especially with his large hands handling Xi Zi’s tiny legs.
Thinking about Xi Yuechen’s usual accomplishments, his high status, and strict personality—yet here he was, changing a diaper for a little baby. How could Su Ruo not be delighted?
Thankfully, Xi Zi didn’t sleep in his parents’ room at night. Otherwise, if he cried, who would get up to soothe him? His loving mother or his strict father?
Of course, this was hypothetical. Shen Liang had hired a night nanny to care for Xi Zi—essentially just for nighttime. During the day, Xi Zi was either with his parents or grandparents; no one else was needed.
Shen Liang worried that if Xi Zi cried at night, it would disturb Su Ruo, who hadn’t fully recovered yet. So, a nanny was hired for nighttime care, letting Su Ruo handle Xi Zi only during the day.
But Xi Zi was quite well-behaved at night. Except when hungry or wet, he slept most of the time. So obedient that even the nanny loved him, calling him the most adorable child she had ever seen—delicate, low-maintenance, smart, and destined for great things.
Regardless of how much truth was in that praise, everyone was delighted. Not only did Shen Liang boast endlessly, but Su Feng and Xi Jian’an also occasionally chimed in, unable to hide their pride.
Su Ruo, however, thought differently. Watching Xi Zi either sleep or stare blankly with his black eyes, she couldn’t help but mutter inwardly: “Why so dull? You’re so serious at this age. Cry, throw a tantrum like a normal baby! Even if you take after your dad and aren’t very lovable, you should still have some ability. But this is too much of a genetic inheritance.”
“Too much, son!”
Su Ruo’s inner calls stayed in her mind—she dared not speak them aloud, fearing reproach. Still, she observed the reality: most babies cried constantly, but her son remained so dull and serious.
Still, this dullness lightened her workload, leaving her virtually stress-free and happy most of the time.
In short, Su Ruo’s attitude was typical—she benefited yet pretended to be modest.
When Shen Liang and the others first saw Xi Yuechen changing a diaper, his expressive face and wide eyes made them question reality. Could it be true that Xi Yuechen, of all people, could be so down-to-earth and human?
Once things calmed, Shen Liang felt no annoyance. If Xi Yuechen could someday show this “ordinary” side, she’d be moved to tears. Her icy son finally had a soft side.
As for changing diapers? Well, it’s only fair. A father should care for his child in small ways—he couldn’t just stand by.
In Shen Liang’s eyes, nothing mattered more than her golden grandson.
Xi Jian’an, witnessing this unusual scene, was also delighted. Such harmony! If he weren’t afraid of accidentally hurting his grandson, he would have joined in. But this wasn’t distress—it was indulgence! Xi Yuechen was clearly spoiling the child, and yet he seemed almost regretful.
He Wen and the others were even more amazed, praising Su Ruo for shaping Xi Yuechen into a thoughtful, attentive man. The story of Xi Yuechen as a “super dad” quickly became a legendary tale in their circle, endlessly repeated by women as a cautionary tale about their own husbands.
Lost in thought, Su Ruo almost forgot she was still on the phone with Zhou Yun Zhen, only snapping back when Yun Zhen called her several times.
“Sorry, I got distracted just now,” Su Ruo said awkwardly.
“It’s fine, you’re a new mother—I understand,” Zhou Yun Zhen replied coldly with a smile.
“What did you just say?” Su Ruo asked, not noticing Yun Zhen’s subtle change in tone.
“I asked how you and the baby are doing. Are you both okay?”
“Yes, we’re fine. I’ve mostly recovered. But at home, they insist I sit for confinement, so careful it’s ridiculous. Even Xi Zi is being held by them more than by me.”
Su Ruo spoke freely, but Zhou Yun Zhen wasn’t pleased. How could she hear about Su Ruo’s perfect, happy life? Even the new term “Xi Zi” from Su Ruo’s words seemed to pass unnoticed by her.
“Your in-laws treat you really well,” Yun Zhen said finally.
“Yes, they do. But I tell them, and they don’t listen,” Su Ruo said with a mixture of pride and complaint.
Zhou Yun Zhen felt like needles were piercing her heart, making her hand tremble as she held the phone. She took several deep breaths to calm herself.
“And Xi Yuechen? Does he treat you this well too?”
Xi Yuechen? Su Ruo frowned. Why did Yun Zhen call him that—so familiar?
“Yes, he’s been home a lot lately, helping take care of Xi Zi. He’s more attentive than I am.”
Su Ruo, not knowing Yun Zhen’s thoughts, returned to her usual cheerful self, happily showing off her bliss.
But to Zhou Yun Zhen, hearing this felt like a knife in her heart. How could Su Ruo still sound so happy when talking about Xi Yuechen? Was she pretending to be happy to save face?
Yet Yun Zhen could tell from Su Ruo’s tone that her happiness was genuine. Such a pretense could not be faked.
What crushed Yun Zhen most wasn’t Su Ruo’s nonchalant reaction, but the fact that Xi Yuechen—a proud, exceptional man—actually cared for a crying infant. How could this be? Someone so outstanding should be untouchable! How could Su Ruo deserve such a privilege?
Zhou Yun Zhen had nearly reached her limit, but reason prevented her from demanding Su Ruo stop talking.
“Have you two been arguing recently?” Yun Zhen’s face twisted slightly, her tone flat and stiff.
Su Ruo’s brows furrowed. Yun Zhen’s voice sounded strange. And why ask such a question? Why would they be arguing?
“No, we’re fine. Why would we fight?”
Yun Zhen didn’t believe it. How could those photos not provoke any conflict? How could Xi Yuechen treat her so well?
“Really? Never? Not even once?”
Su Ruo was annoyed by the question. What kind of questions were these? Was Yun Zhen hoping they’d fight?
“No, we’ve always been fine. Especially now, no unpleasant incidents have occurred,” Su Ruo replied more seriously, her warmth slightly diminished.
But Zhou Yun Zhen only whispered to herself: “Impossible… shouldn’t be…”
Su Ruo’s face darkened. She wanted to ask: What exactly do you mean? And why does what happens between my husband and me concern you?
Zhou Yun Zhen’s unusual behavior made Su Ruo rare serious. Were it not for recalling Yun Zhen’s past help at the Lao Qi family, she might have hung up already.
“Our relationship isn’t gossip fodder, right? And are you really hoping we fight?”
It wasn’t surprising Su Ruo reacted strongly. Yun Zhen’s mention of Xi Yuechen made her uneasy, and such a response could hardly make Su Ruo happy.
“Yun Zhen, is there anything else?”
Su Ruo forced a polite smile, signaling it was time to end the call.
Startled, Yun Zhen heard Su Ruo’s slightly cold tone, her heart thumping. Frustrated, she scolded herself mentally for losing control in front of Su Ruo.
“No, nothing else. I just wanted to check on you. I’ve had some emotional setbacks recently and wanted your advice. If anything I said was inappropriate, please don’t take it personally.”
This time, Yun Zhen’s tone was much more normal and sincerely apologetic. But Su Ruo’s unease lingered. She just nodded along: “It’s fine. Are you okay?”
“I’m okay, just feeling a little down,” Yun Zhen forced a smile.
“Don’t be too sad. You can call me if you have questions, though my phone is currently managed by my mother-in-law, so she might answer,” Su Ruo said with a smile, though a trace of perfunctoriness was in it.
Perhaps realizing it was unwise to continue, Yun Zhen said: “If I really need you, don’t be annoyed. I won’t disturb you further. Our hospital is busy, so I’ll get back to work.”
“Alright, don’t overwork yourself. Take care,” Su Ruo replied obligingly.
After hanging up, Yun Zhen collapsed onto the sofa, exhausted, her expression shadowed.
Su Ruo tossed the phone aside, waiting for Xi Yuechen to come in and take it, but her expression remained slightly displeased, lips pressed together, eyes filled with doubt. That call with Zhou Yun Zhen had been far too unusual… And why did she sound so strange when she said “the chief”?
