“Or what?”
Xi Yuechen asked innocently, successfully shutting Su Ruo up.
Yeah, you said you trust me, I explained that everything happened for a reason, and now it’s all over. Isn’t that enough?
“You… you… aren’t going to apologize?”
Su Ruo stubbornly pressed on. You blockhead! So dense! Acting all businesslike—what’s this, business?
Actually, Su Ruo wanted to ask, aren’t you going to coax me a little? But she immediately realized that asking someone like Xi Yuechen—who’s been a stubborn blockhead for eternity—to say something sweet was absurd. Just expecting him to coax her was as ridiculous as the sun rising in the west. Too much to ask.
Since being kidnapped, Su Ruo had grown a bit dependent on Xi Yuechen. Bringing up this matter now was just an excuse to act a little spoiled, to have Xi Yuechen pamper her. But who knew things would turn out like this? Even if his circumstances were special, she could understand, but couldn’t he at least show some guilt? She had stayed home, worked hard giving birth to his child, and trusted him wholeheartedly. Couldn’t he even show a little gratitude? His total nonchalance felt infuriating.
If she let this slide, she’d be the one losing. If this ended in frustration now, next time there was a situation like this, how could she hold him accountable? This time, she had to make him understand she wasn’t so easily bullied, completely stamping out this “bad habit.”
…But really, what had Xi Yuechen done to Su Ruo? Getting mad at him for this was basically inviting trouble. Yet now, her attempt at being spoiled was met with his indifferent handling, wounding her pride. She had to find a way to turn the tables. Otherwise, it would be too frustrating.
Xi Yuechen looked at Su Ruo’s aggrieved, indignant expression, wiped the smile from his face, and his gaze deepened. He lowered his eyes in silence, as if lost in thought.
“I’m sorry.”
Gah??? ⊙⊙
Su Ruo froze in shock. What was happening?
She wasn’t hallucinating, was she? Why did she hear an I’m sorry???
She glanced at Xi Yuechen from the corner of her eye, trying to gauge his expression. Her heart raced. She had just been fussing a little, never expecting him to actually utter these golden words. Was he simply impatient and trying to appease her?
No wonder she was so nervous—who had ever heard Xi Yuechen say I’m sorry? And she hadn’t even meant for this to get serious; she just wanted to act a little tsundere. But now… would he think she was being unreasonable?
“Chief…” Su Ruo started to explain that she didn’t really want him to apologize. She was just upset.
But before she could finish, Xi Yuechen interrupted, “I didn’t expect it to be Brother Long.”
Upon hearing this, Su Ruo immediately realized what Xi Yuechen’s apology was about.
As everyone knew, Xi Yuechen was never one to read the room or go with the flow. He certainly wouldn’t apologize meekly just to soothe Su Ruo’s little temper. Even a hundred years of evolution wouldn’t make him that “considerate.”
The reason he said sorry was genuine—he truly felt he owed Su Ruo an apology. It wasn’t to please her.
Because of the operations team situation, he had rushed back to B City for several days. Besides meetings, there was one urgent matter: the people who had kidnapped Su Ruo had been neglected for days; it was time to deal with them.
Who knew he would run into a familiar face… Brother Long, of all people.
Xi Yuechen was momentarily at a loss. Seeing Brother Long, he hadn’t expected this, yet there was a trace of understanding. Yes, that night when Yanmen was destroyed, he had worried Su Ruo might be affected—but not this soon. Not so suddenly that he was unprepared, leaving Su Ruo to suffer unnecessarily. Had he been more vigilant, she wouldn’t have had to endure such hardship.
In the end, it was he, Xi Yuechen, who had dragged Su Ruo into danger. In the midst of Brother Long’s furious cursing, Xi Yuechen’s thoughts turned to Su Ruo.
Since the day Su Ruo married him, he had owed her—rarely together, constantly apart, even his life had threatened hers. Such a wonderful person… it was his own inadequacy that caused her suffering.
Xi Yuechen, always proud and capable, with a mind tougher than most, was genuinely shaken this time. Su Ruo had narrowly escaped being kidnapped, which alone made him angry and heartbroken. But to realize he had caused this chaos himself… it hurt even more. His woman, whom he couldn’t protect fully, had faced danger, fear, and life-threatening situations…
He seemed trapped in a mental spiral, dwelling on these thoughts, increasingly distressed, his mind darkening—a negative emotion he had never experienced before, almost torturing him.
The people around him could no longer listen to Brother Long’s harsh curses. They looked at Xi Yuechen, who stood expressionless, seemingly listening—but his blank expression suggested he was elsewhere. His eyes might be looking, but his mind was gone. Clearly, he wasn’t absorbing much of the tirade.
They hesitated, but Brother Long’s words grew more extreme. Letting it go unchecked was risky.
Summoning courage, they quietly called Xi Yuechen, trying to both bring him back to focus and to get instructions on handling the situation that had been left unresolved for days.
Only now did Xi Yuechen react. He had heard Brother Long’s cursing, glanced at the venomous gaze, and let out a soft hum, a faint arc at the corner of his lips—like in D Province—but the cold, dark gleam in his eyes made him look terrifying.
Brother Long had never seen this side of Xi Yuechen, and froze, unable to speak.
“Don’t worry. Soon you’ll meet your brother,” Xi Yuechen said, leaving as he turned.
“Oh,” Xi Yuechen said over his shoulder before exiting, addressing those in the room watching Brother Long. “Too much foul language. Handle it. You may proceed—no need to ask.”
He left without looking back, his figure exuding extreme coldness.
The person who had just watched shivered. Only after Xi Yuechen closed the door did they exhale, realizing how terrifying he had been. Usually calm and unflappable, today he showed a side that was almost unbearable. Cold as ice, yet burning like fire—unimaginably fierce.
Indeed, Xi Yuechen’s abilities, honed over years in the military, were enough to make people tremble. When enraged, his aura and gaze became tangible weapons—razor-sharp.
At that moment, it was clear: someone who could inspire awe in one second could inspire fear in the next.
Watching Brother Long’s terrified expression, Xi Yuechen sighed, pitying him. Xi Yuechen wasn’t unreasonable—if he was this ruthless, Brother Long must have done something unforgivable. What, exactly, could provoke this?
Though his words were casual, the hidden threat was unmistakable. “Too much foul language—handle it” meant deprive him of speech. “Proceed, no need to ask” meant act decisively. They realized that if Xi Yuechen wanted to eliminate Brother Long outright, he wouldn’t need to say “no need to ask.”
The person smirked, signaling others to carry out Xi Yuechen’s orders.
He was confident Brother Long would not end his days comfortably. Having endangered Su Ruo and the child, Xi Yuechen could not tolerate it. Brother Long would pay.
Xi Yuechen ignored Brother Long’s fate. This person could not leave alive. As for issuing a nationwide wanted notice, if no one could find him, it would be dropped—after all, he wasn’t influential.
Su Ruo, hearing Xi Yuechen mention Brother Long, understood. Xi Yuechen knew who was behind the incident. Watching him silent, guilt and frustration radiated from him, pulling at her heart.
“It’s all over now. I’m fine. Besides, surviving disaster means good luck ahead. Our little Xi Zi will definitely grow up successful,” Su Ruo said gently. Knowing Xi Yuechen was troubled, she tried to shift the topic. Whatever had happened was in the past. Seeing him so low made her heart ache.
She couldn’t bear to see her chief suffer even a little. It was just the past—no need for him to feel guilty.
“Mm.”
Xi Yuechen responded softly, focusing on Su Ruo’s presence beside him, not speaking further, perhaps not even hearing her words.
For a moment, the hospital room fell silent, only their breaths intertwining as time passed.
