Today, Su Ruo woke up very early. She opened her eyes and glanced at Xi Yuechen, who was still sleeping, then checked the time. So early… how much longer would she have to wait?
Since Su Ruo had been in the hospital room, Xi Yuechen had been keeping watch at night without fail. Even the time he returned from a meeting in B City, he hurried back that very night.
Those past two days, Xi Yuechen seemed especially busy, traveling back and forth to B City every day—leaving in the early morning and returning at night. Su Ruo watched him and felt distressed, telling him that if he was too busy, he didn’t have to rush back at night. There were plenty of people around; making all these trips day after day was too exhausting.
But Xi Yuechen didn’t listen. Every time he would just reach out, touch the top of her head, and shake his head in refusal. “It’s fine. Not tired.”
Even if Su Ruo said nothing, others like Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang had tried to tell Xi Yuechen to take it easy, but he would brush it off with his usual indifference. Not only did he come and go according to his own schedule, he also stayed up every night, unwavering.
Fortunately, this didn’t last long—only four days. Otherwise, Su Ruo would have seriously worried whether his body could handle it.
And now, four days later—today—her long-awaited little Xi, finally, was going to move out of the incubator.
Su Ruo had been eagerly waiting for her son since the doctor told her yesterday that he would leave the incubator today. She was so excited that she could hardly wait for the morning to come. Naturally, she woke up far too early and couldn’t fall back asleep.
The time was still early, and Su Ruo didn’t know how to pass it. She glanced at Xi Yuechen, still with his eyes closed, and dared not make a move—she was afraid any movement would wake him. After all these days of constant rushing, he must be very tired. Today, he didn’t have to leave early for B City, so let him sleep a little longer.
But Xi Yuechen’s vigilance, honed over years of training, was not something Su Ruo could avoid. Even while sleeping, he was startled awake as soon as she sat up, despite her being extremely careful.
“Uh… Chief,” Su Ruo said, sitting up and staring at him, worried she had woken him. She hadn’t expected him to be awake already.
Sigh… Su Ruo felt a little defeated. Xi Yuechen opened his eyes, and the clarity in them made it seem as if he hadn’t been asleep at all. His gaze fell on her.
“I—I just wanted to wash my face. Do you want to sleep a bit longer?” Feeling scrutinized, Su Ruo felt slightly guilty.
“No need,” Xi Yuechen replied, already awake and no longer used to sleeping in. He turned to sit up. “I’ll help you over there.”
“No, I can walk myself. My wound has mostly healed.” Su Ruo shook her head. It had been quite some time—the incision on her abdomen had long since healed, and her body had recovered. She didn’t need anyone’s help. If anything, they were just being overcautious. She could even be discharged today if needed.
Seeing her refusal, Xi Yuechen didn’t insist. He stood and went to the window to open the curtains. Glancing at the time, his eyebrows lifted.
The little woman usually didn’t wake up this early. Why was she awake at this hour today?
His confusion didn’t last long. He soon remembered that her little one was leaving the incubator today, which explained her unusual behavior.
A hint of helplessness crossed his eyes, and if you looked closely, there was even a trace of indulgence in that helplessness.
After washing her face, Su Ruo looked even more refreshed. Returning to the hospital bed, she stared at Xi Yuechen with wide, bright eyes that gleamed in the dim room.
Sitting back on the bed, she tilted her head slightly and quietly observed Xi Yuechen’s face, a faint smile curling on her lips. Her mood was clearly very good.
Since the incident, Su Ruo had become even more reliant on Xi Yuechen. Her eyes could only settle when she could see him; otherwise, she felt restless. At the same time, she enjoyed spending time with him even more—simply sitting together quietly, wordlessly, gave her peace and security.
Although she didn’t say it out loud, the kidnapping had left a significant impact on her. Thinking back to Long Ge’s frenzy that night still gave her a sense of deja vu—if even one step in their escape had gone differently, she and her child might not have survived…
Whenever she thought of it, Su Ruo would break out in a cold sweat, the fear lingering. She would never want to go through such danger again.
Because of this life-and-death experience, Su Ruo became more certain that there were still many things in this world she could not let go. Unlike last time, when Su Ruo was a completely unattached orphan, Su Ruo now had family, friends, a husband, and now a son. This life could not be lost at any cost.
Hence her attachment to little Xi and her reluctance to be apart from Xi Yuechen. As for Long Ge, Su Ruo would not question Xi Yuechen. Whatever the chief wanted to do, she would support him, without probing into what had happened, why Long Ge had come after her, or what happened in D Province. What she needed to do now was simple: one, take good care of Xi Zi and let him grow up healthy; two, devote herself to Xi Yuechen, trust him, and… love him.
Su Ruo no longer tried to hide anything. Yes, she loved him—Xi Yuechen. Long ago, her feelings had changed; such an outstanding man was her husband. How could she not love him?
Her mind whirled, but although she remained silent, the smile on her face grew even brighter. Looking at Xi Yuechen, her eyes narrowed slightly in joy.
Xi Yuechen noticed her eyes sparkling ever more brightly, and the gaze fixed on him seemed almost tangible.
“What are you looking at?” Su Ruo remained silent, but Xi Yuechen didn’t want to stay quiet. Even if a flower grew on his face, it shouldn’t attract this level of focused attention.
“I’m looking at you,” Su Ruo said, pouting and blinking. “Why? Not allowed? I’m telling you, in this world, only I am right to look at you this way.”
Her bold declaration, which was almost like a confession, had a completely different effect this time. Xi Yuechen’s calm expression finally showed a trace of surprise.
He didn’t feel any displeasure; rather, he found it amusing. “Alright, then look.”
Xi Yuechen’s reaction pleased Su Ruo. Not bad—not bad, he was responsive and no longer acting like an iceberg. And as for her previous boast, she didn’t feel the slightest embarrassment. As his wife, she had every right to assert some control over him!
However… in just a second, her smile suddenly faded. Not only that, her gaze at Xi Yuechen turned resentful.
Right, she had forgotten something—a thorn in her heart. Today, she would settle it once and for all, so she wouldn’t have to stew over it later.
Xi Yuechen didn’t have time to ask what had suddenly come over her. He just heard a heavily resentful hum.
Worried, his previously relaxed brow furrowed slightly. He thought Su Ruo might be feeling unwell, but little did he know, she was about to confront him for his “infidelity.”
“Chief, there’s something I absolutely must ask you. You have to tell me everything, in detail,” Su Ruo said, narrowing her eyes. Her tone was far from friendly—it was threatening.
“Alright. Ask,” Xi Yuechen replied casually, not knowing what she had in mind. Since it wasn’t about her health, he relaxed, thinking she might be asking about Long Ge, and was already considering his wording.
“By the way, where’s my phone?” Su Ruo started to ask directly, then remembered she should show him the photos as evidence. That way, he couldn’t deny anything. And… she wanted to see if he could figure out who took these photos. The person had bad intentions, and knowing who it was would be better than passively being in the dark.
No matter what that person’s purpose was, one thing Su Ruo was sure of: their goal was to destroy the marital bond between her and Xi Yuechen—a truly despicable act!
“I’ll go get it for you,” Xi Yuechen said calmly.
Su Ruo’s phone had been left at home the night Su Heng and the others came, but later Su Heng brought it over from B City, anticipating she might need it.
Once brought, it naturally stayed with Xi Yuechen—what could be more reasonable? He was always by her side, making it convenient if she needed it.
Su Ruo wasn’t surprised that Xi Yuechen held onto the phone. After all, she couldn’t use it now; having him hold it was fine.
The phone was off. She guessed it was out of battery. She took it and, to her surprise, it was fully charged. Probably someone had charged it for her, she thought, and ignored the dozens of missed calls and messages, heading straight for the photo album—after all, everyone knew she was hospitalized, and she couldn’t use the phone now anyway. The purpose was simply to show Xi Yuechen the evidence of his “infidelity.” The other calls and messages could be ignored.
Xi Yuechen, catching Su Ruo’s look, naturally sat at the head of the bed and leaned against her, his eyes also on the screen.
“I’ll show you something first. This is evidence. You can’t deny it. Tell me everything truthfully,” Su Ruo said, stopping to turn her head toward Xi Yuechen, her expression serious.
Seeing her act so earnestly, Xi Yuechen didn’t know what she wanted to show him but nodded. Still… why did he have this uneasy premonition?
