When Su Ruo slowly came to, night had already fallen. Frowning, she struggled to open her eyes—only to realize that her surroundings had changed.
She jolted fully awake at once. Because her body felt heavy, she couldn’t turn over quickly. She could only prop herself up slightly and look around, taking in her surroundings.
“Finally awake?”
A man’s voice suddenly sounded. Su Ruo’s head was still foggy; it took a few seconds before she realized it was Brother Long’s voice.
“What are you trying to do? Where is this place?”
Su Ruo frowned and asked coldly.
By now she could see clearly that she was in a very basic guesthouse. The room and its furnishings were extremely shabby. Back when she was still Su Ruo, she had stayed in places like this before—conditions were terrible, but the price was cheap, so there were always plenty of guests.
She was lying on the bed. In the corner of the room, Brother Long was sitting on a chair, with two people standing beside him. Su Ruo guessed they were the two men from the car earlier—she hadn’t clearly seen their faces at the time.
The moment she fully woke up, Su Ruo discreetly checked her clothes. Seeing that they weren’t disheveled, she quietly let out a sigh of relief. At least this kidnapping hadn’t turned utterly cliché yet. As long as it wasn’t about sexual assault or harming the baby, everything else was negotiable…
“What am I trying to do?” Brother Long suddenly shouted. “Why don’t you ask your lover what he has done?! I trusted him so much, did so much for him with all my heart—but what about him? Not only did he show no gratitude, he even led people to wipe out our Yan Sect! When he did that, did he ever think there would be retribution?!”
Looking at Brother Long’s near-hysterical state, Su Ruo clenched her teeth inwardly. Retribution? If anyone deserved retribution, it was them, wasn’t it? Who told them to break the law and harm society on a daily basis? Now they were turning around and biting back—crazy!
In Su Ruo’s mind, Xi Yuechen was the embodiment of justice. Anyone who opposed him, anyone he chose to eliminate, must surely be a scourge on society—evil to the core, without question. A textbook case of absolute thinking.
So naturally, she had nothing but contempt for Brother Long’s words. Still, at this moment she didn’t dare provoke him. Given his mental state, Su Ruo would rather play the turtle and hide her head.
“The dead are dead, the arrested are arrested. Now I’m the only one left,” Brother Long muttered darkly. “What do I have left to care about? You won’t get off easy either.”
Hearing this, Su Ruo’s heart jolted. She quickly spoke up to divert his attention.
“How could you have nothing to care about? What about Sister-in-law? Brother Long, you have children, don’t you? They’re waiting for you to come home. They must be terribly worried right now. You still have family.”
“Family?”
Brother Long frowned, lowered his head, and fell silent. His expression turned confused. Family… yes, he still had a wife and children. They must be anxious sick right now. He hadn’t even called them yet…
Seeing his expression soften, Su Ruo felt a surge of hope and continued, “Why don’t you call home now? Sister-in-law must be worried out of her mind. You’re their pillar—they can’t lose you.”
As she spoke, Su Ruo secretly observed the room, wondering if there might be a chance to escape.
The two underlings beside Brother Long noticed his dazed state and exchanged glances. The one standing closer stepped forward and called softly, “Brother Long.”
The voice startled him awake. He blinked, and in an instant his expression grew even more vicious than before. Snarling, he said, “I do have family—but Liu Qi and the others had families too! And now what?! They’re all fucking dead! Their families will never see them again! All of this was brought on by Cheng Yue! I’ll make him taste the pain of losing his loved ones!”
Seeing Brother Long like this, Su Ruo felt as if she had lifted a rock only to smash her own foot. She had hoped invoking his family would calm him down—who knew it would backfire instead?
“Loved ones?” Su Ruo forced herself to speak. “I… and Cheng Yue aren’t really loved ones. You’re right—last time, he lied to you. I—I’m just one of his lovers.”
In her panic, Su Ruo started talking nonsense. She remembered Brother Long once questioning whether she was Xi Yuechen’s wife. Commander, I’m sorry—this is the only way…
“Trying to lie to me again?” Brother Long narrowed his eyes, grinding his teeth.
“No, no. Didn’t you doubt it yourself before? Cheng Yue does have a wife—but it’s not me. He keeps several mistresses outside. I’m just one of them.”
Brother Long stared intently at her face, trying to read something from it. Hearing her words, he let out a cold laugh. “Then what about your belly? Don’t tell me that child is from some fling.”
…Su Ruo choked for a moment.
“The child is his. His wife can’t have children, so after he found out I was pregnant, he planned to take the baby after it’s born and give it to his wife to raise. That’s why it wasn’t aborted. To him, I’m just a tool for having a child. Whatever you do to me, he won’t feel heartbroken at all. Even if this child is gone, there are plenty of others willing to bear children for him!”
As she said this, Su Ruo felt sick to her stomach. What kind of nonsense was this? Was she cursing herself, or insulting the commander?
“Oh? So that’s how it is,” Brother Long said, nodding with an unreadable expression. Then his tone shifted. “But what does that have to do with me? Whether what you say is true or not, I’m not going back to find his wife. So this scapegoat can only be you. Who told me you’re the one I caught?”
At this moment, Su Ruo no longer had time to react further. Her heart was completely seized by fear. Brother Long clearly had no intention of letting her go.
Seeing her pale face, one of Brother Long’s underlings couldn’t help feeling pity for her. Deep down, he felt she was quite innocent—debts had their owners, grudges had their sources. This kind of hatred shouldn’t fall on such a weak woman.
This underling was called Pan Zhiming. He hadn’t joined the Yan Sect for long and didn’t have much attachment to it. Its destruction didn’t bring him much sorrow—only a sense of regret. Seeing Su Ruo’s pretty face now, looking so pitiful, his heart softened.
But what good was his sympathy? He couldn’t make any decisions. All he could do was silently feel sorry for her.
Su Ruo took a deep breath. No—she couldn’t just wait for death. She had to think of a way.
“So, Brother Long… your intention is to take revenge on me?” she asked.
“That’s right.”
“I’ve already been brought here. Whether I live or die is just a thought of yours. But where exactly is this place? You can’t let me die without knowing, can you?” Su Ruo tried to probe, hoping to get some information.
“Trying to get information out of me?”
After everything he’d been through, Brother Long’s mind was sharper now. At least he knew to think things through a bit.
He knew Su Ruo was trying to find out where they were. But even if she knew, what could she do? If what she said was true—that she was just Cheng Yue’s lover—then it didn’t matter. Even if he couldn’t kill Cheng Yue himself to avenge the Yan Sect, killing his child would at least ease the grief and hatred with nowhere to go. Just a lover—who would care whether she lived or died?
And if, as Cheng Yue had said, this woman really was his wife—then even better. They were already out of B City now, no fear of anyone coming after them. Besides, Cheng Yue was still in D Province, harvesting the fruits of his victory. Even if he found out, so what?
“Since you want to know, I’m not afraid to tell you. We left B City a long time ago. This is H Province. If you’re thinking of playing any tricks, give it up early—it’s useless.”
Brother Long said this with a hint of pride. He wasn’t as stupid as before; thinking things through before acting was never wrong.
“If you know what’s good for you, stay here quietly. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being ruthless!”
With that, Brother Long turned and left the room with the two men. He had been on edge all day and was utterly exhausted. Now that they were out of B City, he could rest a bit. Once he recovered his energy, he’d have the strength to properly “entertain” Cheng Yue’s woman and child.
After they left, Su Ruo suddenly felt all her strength drain away. The forced calm she had maintained completely collapsed.
H Province?
They had actually left B City. Her family must already know she’d been kidnapped—who knew how anxious they were. But no matter how powerful the Su family and the Xi family were, H Province was far beyond their reach. Worse still, they didn’t even know she was in H Province.
How was she supposed to escape now? Or at least let her family know where she was?
As she thought about it, Su Ruo suddenly laughed softly. This situation felt so familiar—almost exactly the same as when she had been kidnapped by Hong Shirong before. Last time, she had narrowly escaped with her life. What about this time?
No matter what, she couldn’t let anything happen to herself. She had to find a way to escape—otherwise, the baby would surely be implicated as well.
Even now, Su Ruo didn’t regret her decision to go with Brother Long voluntarily. She was already eight months pregnant. One wrong move could put the baby in danger. She might not have understood before, but as time passed, a mother’s instinct had slowly invaded every inch of her being.
So as long as there was even the slightest threat to her child, she would do everything in her power to eliminate it.
At this moment, Xi Yuechen still hadn’t been able to leave Han Zhiyuan’s house. He wouldn’t be able to return to B City until tomorrow at the earliest. Even though he had decided to head back first, he couldn’t do so in such a rush. He had to finish dealing with matters here—otherwise, his conscience wouldn’t be at ease.
Unlike the quiet on Su Ruo’s side and Xi Yuechen’s side, the Xi and Su families were in complete chaos.
In the night, the Su family home was brightly lit. The atmosphere in the living room was oppressively heavy—but who had the mind to care about that now?
Su Feng’s lips were pressed tightly together, his face frighteningly pale. So much time had passed, and they still hadn’t found a single clue! So many people had been mobilized, yet there wasn’t the slightest trace of Ruoruo anywhere in B City.
There were only two possibilities now:
First, Ruoruo was still in B City, and the kidnappers’ hideout was simply too hard to find in such a vast city—so all they could do was wait.
Second, Ruoruo was no longer in B City. She might have already been taken away. Otherwise, after searching for so long, there wouldn’t still be complete silence.
There was no other plan. They could only urge everyone to speed up the search. Given Ruoruo’s current condition, every extra second meant an extra measure of danger.
