So that evening, when Liu Qi took Xi Yuechen out to indulge in nightlife and revelry, Bai Xiong tagged along as well, saying he wanted to personally keep an eye on things and give Xi Yuechen some guidance.
With Bai Xiong putting it that way, what choice did Xi Yuechen have? He couldn’t exactly refuse and make things awkward for him.
And so, just after six o’clock, an eye-catching scene appeared in front of the Imperial City: a long convoy of cars parked neatly at the entrance. From a line of sleek, glossy black luxury sedans stepped out a large group of burly men dressed in black suits. Passersby, seeing this, very tacitly detoured around them. One look told you these men were not to be trifled with—it was wiser to steer clear.
This was Bai Xiong’s first outing since the assassination attempt. After what had happened last time, he was now far more attentive to his personal safety. For this trip, he had brought plenty of manpower and was fully armed.
No one knew where Bai Xiong had found these people. Each of them was tall, imposing, and exuded an intimidating presence. When such a group gathered together, even standing perfectly still with eyes straight ahead, the pressure they put on ordinary people was immense. No wonder pedestrians hurried away.
Liu Qi and Xi Yuechen were the first to get out of the car. After surveying their surroundings, they opened the rear door and invited Bai Xiong to step out.
The owner of Imperial City had already received word that Bai Xiong was coming and was waiting downstairs to welcome him. He had originally wondered whether he should clear the venue, but when he asked Bai Xiong, he was turned down. Bai Xiong said he was just here to take a casual look around—there was no need to make such a big fuss.
Now, seeing this ostentatious and high-profile entrance, the owner’s eyelid twitched. Hadn’t he said not to make a big scene and to keep things low-key? With all the passersby watching, how was this low-key at all?
Bai Xiong, however, seemed quite satisfied with his entrance. After exchanging a few polite pleasantries with the owner who had come forward to curry favor, he strode straight into Imperial City.
Xi Yuechen and Liu Qi hurried to follow. The bodyguards didn’t all come upstairs—only a few accompanied Bai Xiong. The rest spread out to provide discreet protection.
Which made sense. If all those fierce-looking men in black went upstairs, Imperial City might as well forget about doing business that night. One glance and anyone would think it was the mafia. Who would be in the mood to have fun under their watchful eyes?
Please don’t let anything happen tonight, the owner thought anxiously as he walked behind them. Bai Xiong is already the boss of Yanmen—why does he still come to a place like this to have fun? With so many people coming and going, it’s chaotic. Wouldn’t it be better to go straight to a high-end private club?
Could he be here to inspect the place?
That thought gave the owner an even bigger headache. A few days ago, he had received notice from Yanmen, telling him that something was going to be held at Imperial City in a few days and that he should prepare.
After finding out what exactly it was, he had broken out in a cold sweat. Was heaven playing a joke on him? Did his luck really have to be this bad?
Several major gangs in L City were going to gather here! What kind of “gathering” was this? This was clearly their own version of a Hongmen Banquet!
He had been so worried about it that he was practically breathing fire and hadn’t slept well for days. Yet he couldn’t refuse. After all, Imperial City relied on Yanmen for protection and reputation. Strip it down to the truth, and he was simply beneath them—what bargaining power did he have?
Yanmen had been polite on the surface, saying they needed to borrow the venue for a gathering and hoped Imperial City could make things convenient. Of course, they said, the fees would be generous. Call it cooperation if you wanted—but in reality, it was just a notice. He understood that perfectly well.
What else could he do? Just comply. With all the big shots gathering at Imperial City, it could even be considered an honor. Their safety wasn’t his concern. All he had to do was follow Yanmen’s instructions and entertain them properly.
His only hope was that these big bosses wouldn’t fall out and start fighting. If that happened, Imperial City would be finished.
He hadn’t even finalized the arrangements with Yanmen yet, and here Bai Xiong was, arriving in such a grand procession. What was this supposed to mean? Was he deliberately trying to make things hard for him?
The more the owner thought about it, the more convinced he became that Bai Xiong’s sudden visit was an inspection. His nerves tightened even further.
Bai Xiong didn’t go to a private room. Instead, he sat right out in the main hall, chatting and laughing amiably, looking very much like someone who had simply come to have fun.
And wasn’t that exactly why they were here? Xi Yuechen followed Bai Xiong in silence and took a seat in the best spot in the hall, completely ignoring his surroundings.
Bai Xiong and Liu Qi had come here specifically for Xi Yuechen—there was no way they would ignore the main attraction and amuse themselves instead.
“Cheng Yue, I’m telling you—don’t even think about playing any tricks today. Just listen to me. I guarantee you won’t lose out!”
Liu Qi leaned over to Xi Yuechen, handed him a glass of wine, and said with a grin, his eyes fixed on the swaying beauties in the center of the dance floor.
Xi Yuechen smiled faintly and shook his head without saying anything.
“Tell me—which one do you fancy? I’ll get her for you.”
Far from dampening Liu Qi’s enthusiasm, Xi Yuechen’s reaction only encouraged him. He hooked an arm around Xi Yuechen’s shoulder and kept whispering.
A flash of disgust passed through Xi Yuechen’s eyes. He wanted nothing more than to kick Liu Qi off him, but he could only endure it and force a stiff smile.
“Brother Liu, I know you mean well, but you have to give me some time, right?” Xi Yuechen replied quietly.
Yes—some time. Five days. After Yanmen is gone, these disgusting flies will be gone too.
Liu Qi narrowed his eyes and smiled, giving Xi Yuechen a sideways look. “Time? You’re still trying to put it off? What are you even thinking? What man doesn’t like fine wine and beautiful women? People strive upward for enjoyment. If you don’t want these things, then why are you killing yourself to climb higher?”
Xi Yuechen had nothing to say. He simply stopped responding to Liu Qi’s incessant chatter—open your mouth and all that came out was twisted logic.
But Liu Qi had no intention of letting him off the hook. He continued persuading him. “Even if you love your wife and want to be a good man, I get that. But what’s a good man? A good man makes sure his family lives well. Why can’t you see that? If you want to keep climbing in the future, these social engagements are unavoidable. So listen to your brother—it’s really for your own good.”
After a long silence, Xi Yuechen finally nodded lightly. “Yes. I wouldn’t dare refuse Brother Liu’s kindness.”
Liu Qi was finally satisfied. He drained his glass in one gulp, pleased that he’d finally talked him around. Usually this guy seemed pretty sharp—why was he so stubborn about this?
Xi Yuechen concealed the cold light in his eyes, lifted his glass, and took small sips while looking toward the dazzlingly lit dance floor.
Watching the men and women on the dance floor lost in abandon, Xi Yuechen felt nothing but utter boredom. Right now, the person he wanted to see most was his little woman.
Absentmindedly drinking, his thoughts filled entirely with Su Ruo, Xi Yuechen failed to notice Bai Xiong calling over the owner of Imperial City and whispering a few words into his ear.
When the owner left, he couldn’t help glancing at the clearly distracted man sitting nearby, astonishment in his heart.
He recognized that man—knew his name was Cheng Yue. Not long ago, he had been a regular here, often coming with Brother Long. Who would have thought that just a month later, he’d be at Bai Xiong’s side, seemingly doing quite well?
What Bai Xiong had said to him was this: “Go find a few smart women to come over and keep my little brother company. If they’re talented and good-looking, even better.”
It wasn’t hard to see how much Bai Xiong valued Cheng Yue. He even took it upon himself to worry about finding him women. What other member of Yanmen had ever received such treatment?
Muttering to himself, the owner didn’t dare slack off at all. Whatever Bai Xiong’s true purpose was this time, he would simply carry out whatever he was told. That way, nothing should go wrong—right?
He quickly gathered the best women Imperial City had, gave them a few instructions, and then led them toward where Bai Xiong and the others were sitting.
By the time Xi Yuechen sensed that something was wrong, several heavily made-up women were already approaching him, striking seductive poses. Their beautiful eyes brimmed with affection—at first glance, they looked as though they were gazing at a long-lost lover.
Suppressing every impulse, Xi Yuechen forcibly tore his gaze away from them and fixed his eyes on the hazy, entwined dance floor, refusing to look at the women again.
To Bai Xiong and Liu Qi, who had been watching closely, this behavior was interpreted as shyness and embarrassment.
There’s hope! The two exchanged a knowing smile. Crows everywhere were black—what man didn’t like to sneak a taste?
Bai Xiong gave the owner a look and pointed toward Xi Yuechen. The owner immediately understood and nudged the woman beside him.
That woman didn’t hesitate at all. With that push, she smoothly sat down next to Xi Yuechen, her slender jade hand sliding onto his thigh.
Feeling the instant stiffness beneath her palm, the woman smiled knowingly. So he’s a virgin. Her luck tonight was really good—running into such a handsome, charming man. Even if he was inexperienced, she didn’t mind at all.
“Sir, why are you sitting all alone?” To be fair, as one of Imperial City’s top escorts, she was indeed very beautiful. When she smiled, there was a graceful, captivating charm about her, her eyes full of seductive allure.
With such a beauty throwing herself at him, most men would have lost all self-control. Unfortunately for her, the disgust in Xi Yuechen’s heart only intensified. Her perfume assaulted his senses, and the intermittent physical contact constantly tested his limits.
Knowing Bai Xiong was watching him, Xi Yuechen took a deep breath, suppressed the urge to fling the woman away, and allowed her to keep stroking his thigh.
“Haha, I told you—once a beauty steps in, Cheng Yue can’t hold out either,” Bai Xiong laughed loudly, turning to Liu Qi.
“So it turns out Cheng Yue thought the woman I found for him yesterday wasn’t high-class enough,” Liu Qi chimed in with a hearty laugh, his voice full of teasing.
Seeing that Xi Yuechen didn’t stop her, and with everyone around openly encouraging her, the woman grew bolder. Her well-cared-for hands began to roam more brazenly.
Finally, when her actions became increasingly provocative, Xi Yuechen could no longer endure it. He grabbed her wrist and said coldly, “Behave yourself. It’ll be easier for everyone.”
Warned in such an icy tone, the woman froze, clearly frightened. When had she ever not been pampered and fawned over by men? This was the first time she’d ever run into someone like this.
While they were all absorbed in their own interactions, none of them noticed that in another corner of the hall, a phone was continuously snapping photos of them.
Especially of Xi Yuechen.
