Su Ruo listened with a smile as He Wen rambled on, mostly just going over the same complaints about Feng Weijia.
Seeing He Wen’s indignant expression, Su Ruo didn’t bother trying to intervene—she just let her vent.
It’s rare to find someone who could make He Wen so worked up. Su Ruo decided to just sit back and enjoy the show. She had figured it out: these two were a pair of loveable rivals.
Now Su Ruo could be certain—no matter what He Wen did, in this lifetime, she probably couldn’t escape Feng Weijia’s “Five-Finger Mountain.”
Feng Weijia usually seemed indifferent to everything, but once he set his mind on something, he had to succeed. He wouldn’t give up because of a small setback.
Su Ruo could see it clearly: the famous third young master, Feng Weijia, had probably fallen in love. Once a person like him made up his mind, even someone as clueless as He Wen could finally “get it.” There was no way she could be his match.
“Hey! I’ve been talking for so long and you haven’t reacted at all! What’s that about?” He Wen realized, after pouring out her frustrations, that Su Ruo had been distracted.
Great… so all this time I’ve been talking my head off, and she’s just performing a one-woman show?
“No, no,” Su Ruo said, blinking innocently, resting her chin in her hands and pouting. “I did react—I went ‘uh-huh.’”
“…So, should I even thank you?” He Wen almost spat out each word, one by one.
“Hehe, no need, no need,” Su Ruo said with a guilty laugh. Well, these two loveable rivals… what could she, a bystander, say?
“Don’t be upset. I think Feng Weijia is pretty great—look at him: handsome, capable… the dream man of many girls.”
Su Ruo tried to reason with her gently.
He Wen opened her mouth to refute, but before she could speak, a gentle, surprised voice suddenly interrupted:
“Ruo Ruo?”
Su Ruo instantly recognized the voice. Turning, she saw—sure enough:
“Yun Zhen!”
Yes. Standing in front of Su Ruo and He Wen was Zhou Yun Zhen, who hadn’t been seen for a while. She smiled faintly at Su Ruo, her expression clearly one of pleasant surprise.
“I thought it looked like you, so I came over. Didn’t expect it really was you.” Zhou Yun Zhen brushed her hair back and said softly.
“I just came out with a friend today. You should sit down—don’t stand there.” Su Ruo quickly invited her.
Looking at the silently observing He Wen, Zhou Yun Zhen asked, “I won’t be disturbing you, right?”
“How could you? Sit.” He Wen smiled politely but with a hint of distance.
Relieved, Zhou Yun Zhen came over and sat next to Su Ruo.
“Sorry for the intrusion. I was being forward.” She still apologized politely.
“No worries. We’re just chatting casually. Come, let me introduce you,” Su Ruo said, gesturing with her chin toward He Wen. “This is He Wen.”
Then she introduced Zhou Yun Zhen to He Wen: “He Wen, this is Zhou Yun Zhen. What do you think? Isn’t she gorgeous?”
Zhou Yun Zhen, slightly embarrassed at Su Ruo’s teasing, said to He Wen, “Don’t listen to her nonsense. I’m Zhou Yun Zhen. Nice to meet you, He Wen.”
He Wen nodded, the curve of his lips perfectly polite. “Nice to meet you too, Zhou Yun Zhen.”
“Oh, you two are being so formal—relax a little,” Su Ruo laughed at their courteous manners.
“You think everyone’s like you?” Zhou Yun Zhen said to Su Ruo with a helpless expression.
Su Ruo noticed Zhou Yun Zhen’s overly familiar demeanor and raised an eyebrow. Who was this woman? She really thought highly of herself.
“We’re all friends,” Su Ruo said, shrugging and smiling. “Remember last time at Old Qi’s house? I told you about almost falling—Yun Zhen caught me.”
Su Ruo’s expression was faintly grateful as she spoke.
It was her? Hearing this, He Wen’s annoyance lessened slightly, and he smiled at Zhou Yun Zhen. “Oh, it was you? I was wondering how to thank you—thanks a lot.”
Much more sincere than before.
“It’s nothing. I already said it was just a small thing—Ruo Ruo just remembered it.” Zhou Yun Zhen was generous, her every word and action full of refinement.
“You still deserve thanks. If something had happened to Ruo Ruo… it would have been a disaster.” He Wen even made a rare joke.
“Shut up, nonsense! That’s exaggerating.” Su Ruo rolled her eyes at him.
“Of course. Look at how your in-laws treasure you, not to mention your own family.” He Wen spoke matter-of-factly.
Hearing “in-laws,” Zhou Yun Zhen’s fingertips trembled slightly, a subtle emotion flashing across her eyes—but it happened so quickly that Su Ruo and He Wen, busy bickering, didn’t notice.
Su Ruo realized that in their quarrel, Zhou Yun Zhen had been left out.
“Don’t mind He Wen’s nonsense,” Su Ruo said embarrassedly to Zhou Yun Zhen. “She’s just like that.”
“How could I? I think this is fine,” Zhou Yun Zhen smiled faintly, then looked down, seeming a bit sad. “I envy you… I don’t have many friends.”
Used to seeing Zhou Yun Zhen confident, Su Ruo was surprised by this rare look of melancholy and quickly comforted her: “Don’t worry, I’m your friend, and He Wen too. We’re all friends.”
He Wen looked at Su Ruo, then quietly sipped his coffee.
Zhou Yun Zhen smiled, touched. “Yes, I feel very connected to you, Ruo Ruo.”
At that moment, He Wen’s phone rang. Both Su Ruo and Zhou Yun Zhen paused and looked at him.
Seeing the caller ID, He Wen wanted to explode—again? Feng Weijia? Persistent much?
If it were just Su Ruo, He Wen would have cursed on the spot, but with Zhou Yun Zhen watching, he had to suppress his anger.
Reluctantly, he said with a smile, “You two keep chatting. I’ll take this call.”
Su Ruo nodded, and as He Wen walked away, she couldn’t help but smile. She knew perfectly well the grim expression behind his forced smile—probably Feng Weijia calling.
Zhou Yun Zhen noticed Su Ruo’s odd smile and asked, “What’s so funny?”
“Watching someone losing it,” Su Ruo said partially, not wanting to gossip too much in front of her friend.
“Very cute,” Zhou Yun Zhen agreed with a nod.
After a short while, He Wen returned, walking quickly, almost like his feet were flying.
“What’s this?” Su Ruo asked knowingly.
He Wen caught the teasing in her voice and glanced at her with mock disdain.
The phone no longer rang. Silence returned.
Finally rid of that buzzing nuisance, He Wen relaxed, sipping his coffee comfortably.
Su Ruo stirred her juice, curious about what was said to Feng Weijia to make him stop.
How could Feng Weijia ever stop? With his persistent nature, no words could make him back down.
Sure enough, about half an hour later, as the three of them chatted, a male voice suddenly rang out:
“Well, all here? What a coincidence.”
Su Ruo looked up and burst out laughing, while He Wen’s face turned dark—his prior ease vanished, replaced with a mix of shock and anger.
It was Feng Weijia, smiling as he stood behind He Wen.
“Ruo Ruo, haven’t seen you for a few days—you look even more beautiful.”
Feng Weijia teased Su Ruo as he stepped forward and sat down next to He Wen.
“Thanks. Your words are getting more charming by the day,” Su Ruo accepted Feng Weijia’s praise without reservation.
“My honor,” Feng Weijia replied, like a refined gentleman. Su Ruo imagined him performing the classic British gentleman gesture of doffing his hat.
“Feng Weijia!” He Wen finally lost it, glaring angrily. “Why are you here?”
Unbothered, Feng Weijia replied calmly, “I said, it’s a coincidence.”
Coincidence my foot! He Wen mentally tore him apart.
Su Ruo laughed uncontrollably. “Feng Weijia, you’re unbelievable.”
Though she didn’t know how he appeared here, Su Ruo was certain this was no mere “coincidence.”
Feng Weijia winked at Su Ruo, saying nothing.
He Wen didn’t bother with Su Ruo’s teasing, glaring at Feng Weijia with disdain.
“Coincidence over—why aren’t you leaving?”
Feng Weijia called the waiter over and replied, “Since we finally ‘coincidentally’ met, we should chat. I haven’t seen Ruo Ruo in a while.”
He Wen was furious—what had she done in a past life to deserve this rogue in her present one?
Zhou Yun Zhen sat awkwardly. Feng Weijia hadn’t even looked at her once, not even out of the corner of his eye, treating her as if she were invisible.
She gripped the table tightly, her knuckles whitening.
When had she ever received such cold treatment? Even Xi Yuechen, though distant, would at least glance her way. Feng Weijia’s complete disregard was pure indifference.
Su Ruo noticed Zhou Yun Zhen being ignored, glanced over, and saw her still smiling faintly. Even being ignored, not a hint of unhappiness.
Such poise… staying composed no matter what. Su Ruo silently admired her self-control.
