In the end, she could only return home resentfully, still thinking, “She wasn’t like this before… how come she’s become so calculating now?”

Si Qiu had no idea what she was thinking. In fact, she had been meaning to say that this person was also different from the one in the original host’s memories.

However, because of her experiences in her previous life, she had some guesses. Still, as long as the person didn’t betray the country or infringe upon her own interests, she was too lazy to investigate further.

As they walked out of the apartment building, Lu Hongjun pinched her nose lightly.

“Do you really not need me to take you there?”

Si Qiu turned around proudly and walked away.

A smile hung on Lu Hongjun’s face as he headed toward the military camp, walking into the mild morning sunlight.

People coming out of the family quarters greeted him along the way.

“Hongjun, your face is practically splitting from smiling so much this early in the morning. What good thing happened?”

The speaker was Liu Jianjun, his partner at work. Liu Jianjun was five years older than him, yet still rather childish.

Lu Hongjun dodged the arm the other tried to throw around his shoulder and lifted his leg to kick him. Liu Jianjun tried to dodge, but still ended up with a big footprint stamped on his leg.

“Hey! What’s wrong with you? Can’t you take a joke?”

“Alright, stop with the nonsense. Let’s hurry—I have something to tell you.”

Lu Hongjun’s tone sounded normal, but the two of them were too familiar with each other. Liu Jianjun immediately sensed that something was off.

So he dropped his joking expression and walked forward beside him.

Instead of returning to their office, the two of them headed straight to the regimental commander’s office.

Seeing the route they were taking, Liu Jianjun frowned slightly, though he quickly adjusted his expression and continued chatting casually as they walked.

When they met people along the way, both of them greeted them normally with smiles.

They knocked on the commander’s door, and after hearing a voice inside tell them to enter, they opened it and walked in.

The two of them saluted.

The commander was pouring water. When he saw them, he casually grabbed two enamel mugs and poured them each a cup as well.

“Alright, what are you two being so polite for? Sit down. What’s going on so early in the morning that the two of you came together?”

Liu Jianjun set down the enamel mug and raised his eyebrows at Lu Hongjun, making exaggerated eye signals.

Lu Hongjun, completely at ease, opened the commander’s drawer, took out a pack of cigarettes, tossed one to the other side, and kept one for himself. He lit it, took a drag, and slowly exhaled.

Si Qiu didn’t like the smell of smoke, so he never smoked at home.

The old commander didn’t mind. He sat there and lit one as well, waiting for them to speak.

“Commander, I request permission to conduct a detailed investigation into my wife, Comrade Si Qiu.”

The moment those words came out, the two men who had been relaxed instantly sat upright. The commander immediately crushed his cigarette in the ashtray.

“What’s going on? Explain.”

If he was requesting an investigation, there had to be suspicions. And if those suspicions were confirmed, the matter would be serious.

Now that the words were spoken, Lu Hongjun no longer felt conflicted.

He leisurely exhaled a stream of smoke. Sunlight streamed in through the window, the smoke twisting and drifting in the air, accentuating his strikingly handsome face.

Seeing this scene, Liu Jianjun couldn’t help clicking his tongue.

This brat really relied on his good looks— even his own wife took his side because of it.

“Stop acting all profound and mysterious. If you have something to say, just say it.”

Lu Hongjun stubbed out the cigarette, waved away the smoke in front of him, and continued.

“Didn’t I borrow a Russian book before? …Then I discovered that she actually knows four foreign languages—Russian, Japanese, German, and English.”

Although she explained that her memory was exceptionally good, language skills weren’t something you could master through self-study. “She didn’t give me the full details, so when you investigate, you can focus on the village cowshed,” he said.

“If she really learned it through the cowshed, that’s fine, but if that’s the case, your wife’s learning ability should be pretty good, right?”

Hearing Lu Hongjun’s words, Liu Jianjun relaxed a little. After all, marriages like theirs went through background checks—not super detailed, but enough to avoid major issues.

“Even if she’s not completely photographic, it’s close enough. In my wife’s case, just listening to a foreign language is enough for her to pick it up.”

He spoke with a slightly obnoxious pride.

“Oh, then her translation skills shouldn’t be bad,” the brigade commander said, intrigued.

“She can translate my weapons handbook without any trouble.”

When he said that, the commander angrily grabbed the cigarette on the table and threw it.

“Get out of here!”

Lu Hongjun caught the cigarette mid-air, shoved it into his pocket, and followed Liu Jianjun out.

Once they were gone, the commander tapped the table with his fingers, picked up the phone, and dialed. “Hello, Old Lu, this is Bai Qi. I need to discuss something with you.”

After making two calls, everything was arranged; now all that was left was to wait for results.

At noon, Liu Jianjun took his lunchbox to find Lu Hongjun. Since his wife was busy at work, she didn’t have time to make him lunch, so he usually ate at the cafeteria.

But as soon as he stepped out, he saw Lu Hongjun already packed and ready to go home.

“Aren’t you going to get food? Your wife’s not home either, right?”

Lu Hongjun sized him up. “You think I’m like you? Of course I’m going home to make lunch and bring it to my wife. I’m not the kind of man who just waits for food to appear.”

With that, he turned and strode toward home. After all, there was still a bucket of seafood; if he didn’t deal with it, it would go bad.

Watching him disappear, Liu Jianjun couldn’t help muttering a curse. “Damn bastard.”

Then he looked around cautiously—luckily, no one saw. If his wife heard it, she’d lecture him again: he wasn’t as thoughtful as Lu Hongjun, didn’t notice things like Lu Hongjun did—basically, he fell short in every way compared to that guy.

Back home, Lu Hongjun prepared the meals and packed them for his wife. She didn’t want to go back and forth, so he put the boxes together and headed toward the supply cooperative.

But as he approached, he noticed that the normally quiet cooperative was now surrounded by a crowd.

A sharp female voice rang out: “Si Qiu, you can’t bully people like this. We’re from the same village and share the same surname. Si Lai is pregnant and got up early to go gather seafood, but you took it all. Why is your heart so cruel? Just because Si Lai is easygoing, you think you can take advantage. I’m telling you, while Si Lai is easy to deal with, I, Yang Fang, am not. Give me back the seafood, or exchange it for the proper supplies. What you’re doing is robbery, plain exploitation by a landlord.”

Amid the shouting, a timid female voice occasionally chimed in: “Xiaofang, stop, it’s not like that.”

Then a loud slap resounded, followed by his wife’s soft, coquettish voice: “Yapping on and on, talking nonsense—if you keep it up, I’ll tear that mouth of yours.”

Listening to his wife’s playful scolding, Lu Hongjun didn’t think she was overreacting. In fact, her fierce tone sounded incredibly cute to him!
