Instead, they would often write letters, saying their family was in difficulty and asking for a bit of support.

If their family truly were struggling, he wouldn’t mind helping out a little. But everyone knew that their family wasn’t in that kind of trouble. The key issue was that none of them had any ambition.

Not to mention supporting them, even keeping in touch felt like getting stuck in a sticky web.

Lu Hongqi could let it go, but Si Lai almost got trapped in a mental corner by their constant back-and-forth questions.

It was the baby kicking inside her that finally brought her back to reality. She put on a smiling face, exchanged a few pleasantries with everyone, and then the couple went upstairs.

When they opened the door, they both unconsciously glanced toward the opposite door, but neither thought to go knock and ask anything. They silently entered the room, leaving the house completely lifeless.

Just then, their door was knocked. Lu Hongqi stood up and opened it. “Big brother? What brings you knocking?”

“My mother-in-law mailed me some medicinal herbs. There are two small roots of aged ginseng inside. I just wanted to ask if you want to keep one, since pregnancy and childbirth carry certain risks.”

As Lu Hongjun spoke, he turned slightly to glance into his own room through the open door. Lu Hongqi then saw the items scattered across the floor.

“How old are they?”

“Twenty years, thirty years, and fifty years. But you can only keep one; the rest need to be sent to Dad and Mom.”

This had been agreed upon by Lu Hongjun and Si Qiu. After all, if Lu Hongqi bought it himself and something happened during delivery, it would be ready for use. If he didn’t buy it and something went wrong during childbirth, asking them for it would still have to be honored.

“Better keep the fifty-year-old one, right?”

Lu Hongqi had just spoken when Si Lai interrupted.

“No, no, no! How much are they? I think my health is fine. Ginseng isn’t cheap—I don’t need to buy it!”

Lu Hongqi frowned at her but held back his temper. “It’s already very cheap. If we buy the ginseng and keep it there, it can be used immediately in an emergency.”

He took a deep breath and continued, “Not to mention, when I go on missions, if I encounter danger, just a slice can increase my chance of survival. If we didn’t have the means, that would be one thing. But since we do, why not prepare?”

Si Lai bit her lip and finally nodded. “Alright, fine then!”

Then she slowly walked to the bedroom to get the money. Si Qiu, having overheard part of the conversation, directly packed a fifty-year-old root and brought it over.

But when Si Lai returned with the money, something felt off. Lu Hongjun didn’t take it, and they looked at the couple with a half-smile.

Following his brother’s gaze, Lu Hongqi’s eyes fell on the wall, and then he awkwardly looked back at Si Lai. That look made her flinch.

Weakly, she said, “I think just buying the twenty-year-old one is enough.”

Si Qiu quickly packed a twenty-year-old ginseng root, put it into Si Lai’s hands, took the money, and then pulled Lu Hongjun back to their own home.

The door slammed shut with a bang. Then she pressed herself against the door like an octopus, listening to the sounds from across the way.

Lu Hongjun shook his head with a helpless smile and turned to carry the items into the kitchen to start cooking.

When the aroma of stir-frying came from the kitchen, Si Qiu came down the stairs and wobbled over to the kitchen doorway.

“Why are you here? Not listening to the commotion over there anymore?”

Si Qiu puckered her lips. “There’s really no commotion at all. It was just a loud bang when the door closed—it made our whole door shake.”

“Then you’d better go outside quickly. The smoke and fumes are too much in here.”

Seeing that he had already added water to the pan, Si Qiu shook her head and said considerately, “No, I want to stay here with you. My Brother Lu works so hard; how could I not stay with him?”

Even knowing that she was a little trickster, Lu Hongjun couldn’t help but smile.

Si Qiu leaned her head against the doorframe idly and asked, “Why do you think Si Lai is so stingy? She seems to only know how to save money, completely forgetting that money exists to be spent. Hongqi even said he could use it himself, but Si Lai wouldn’t even buy something with a higher year, how disappointed Lu Hongqi must be!”

“Even if he’s disappointed, that’s his own choice. If you have the time to admire my handsome face, feeling sorry for other men seems a bit much, doesn’t it?”

Si Qiu knew he was changing the subject again. Whenever their conversation hit something he didn’t want to talk about, he’d redirect.

So she gave him a sidelong glance and turned back to the living room, collapsing sideways onto the sofa.

Lu Hongjun shook his head, smiling, and continued his work. He knew his wife had a carefree heart; some things just didn’t register in her mind. But at the same time, if she ever took something seriously, the consequences weren’t something just anyone could handle.

Once the kitchen chores were mostly done, he wiped his hands and came out, only to see his wife eating mangoes. He sat down right beside her.

Si Qiu pretended not to notice and moved slightly to the side. Lu Hongjun took a handkerchief and carefully wiped each of her fingers, then held her hand and gave it a kiss.

Si Qiu rolled her eyes at him from behind. He just smiled, lifted his tank top, and let that hand slide across his waist and abdomen a couple of times.

Then he slowly released his grip. That hand seemed almost sentient, moving on its own.

Lu Hongjun firmly turned her body around again. Seeing she wasn’t rolling her eyes at him, he rubbed his nose against hers.

“Baby, don’t be mad, okay?”

Si Qiu pinched his face. “You only know how to use that handsome face to tempt me.”

Hearing him pretend to be hurt, she rubbed his face with the palm of her hand. “If you want me to stop being angry, you need to show some sincerity.”

He pulled her closer, gritting his teeth. “If you don’t want to quietly eat your meal, I’ll start without you.”

Reluctantly, Si Qiu withdrew her hand. “You really don’t know how to joke around.”

Lu Hongjun let her go, took a deep breath, and got up to go back to the kitchen—after all, he could hear the sizzling in the pan.

The night before, the two had enjoyed their big meal, not minding that the apartment across seemed almost silent. The next day, Si Qiu went to work.

Lu Hongjun first went to mail the packages and money, then returned to tidy up the apartment. His holiday was ending tomorrow. While he wouldn’t immediately be on a mission, training and planning still followed a normal work schedule.

He brought in the freshly dried clothes, folded them, and put them in the bedroom. He also wiped the windowsill and bedside table and noticed the book he had been reading a few days ago.

The past two days had been full of playful chaos with his wife, and he hadn’t read at night. He decided it was better to put the book away in the study; if he wanted to read, he could go there. The bedroom really wasn’t suitable for reading.
