Old Master Pei was already quite advanced in age. After all the exertion, he was thoroughly exhausted and went back early to rest. Si Qiu and Pei Jingzhou, however, stayed until the very end, seeing off guests one after another after the wedding concluded.
Since the wedding had been held at dusk, it was already quite late by then. The two were directly escorted by bodyguards back to the courtyard house for their wedding night.
Si Qiu went to freshen up first. By the time Pei Jingzhou finished and came out, he saw her sitting there, reviewing the share transfer agreement given by the old master.
Hearing him, she raised the document in her hand. “We need to get this notarized as soon as possible tomorrow.”
Pei Jingzhou wrapped his arms around her, inhaling the peach scent lingering in her hair. “Qiuqiu, do you think one day you might fall in love with someone else… and transfer the shares to them?”
Si Qiu rolled her eyes. “If I ever did something like that, either my brain would be waterlogged, or I’d be possessed by some wandering ghost. Giving money to someone else? Am I crazy or stupid?”
Her answer made his gaze flicker slightly. “Qiuqiu, let’s live a good life together. I can sign an agreement with you—if I ever cheat or do anything that betrays you, when you ask for a divorce, I’ll compensate you with shares.”
Dressed in a fiery red nightgown, Si Qiu turned around in his arms and leaned back against the headboard. When he tried to move closer, she lifted her foot to press against his chest.
“That’s the condition you’re offering. So what’s your requirement? Pei Jingzhou, we’re husband and wife now—let’s be honest with each other. You’re not the type to give endlessly without asking for something in return.”
“The face of a capitalist—I know it all too well.”
Pei Jingzhou placed a hand over the top of her foot and lowered his head as if to kiss it. Si Qiu immediately pulled it back. Damn it—if he actually kissed it, how would she even face kissing him later?
He stepped forward with his knee and pulled her back into his arms, not hiding the faintly wicked smile at the corner of his lips.
“Hey, how can you say that about me?”
Si Qiu pressed a finger against his lips. “I don’t want to hear that. Tell me the truth, or you won’t get another chance.”
Pei Jingzhou opened his mouth to take her finger between his lips, but she frowned and withdrew it. Realizing he couldn’t brush it off any longer, he leaned in and kissed her cheek.
His lips brushed lightly before moving slowly to her ear. “What I want is for you not to betray me. If one day you do… I’ll have an iron cage made and lock you inside.”
Smack! The crisp sound of a slap rang out. A flush rose on Pei Jingzhou’s cheek. Yet before Si Qiu could pull her hand away, he caught it and planted a kiss on her slightly reddened palm.
“I’ll take that as your agreement.”
Si Qiu let out a soft laugh and grabbed his collar, pulling him closer. “Mm, I agree—but your earlier condition isn’t enough. What you’re offering doesn’t balance out my freedom.”
At her words, his eyes lit up, his breathing growing uneven as his Adam’s apple bobbed. “Then what condition do you want?”
Si Qiu smiled with a bewitching charm, leaning close to his face, her lips brushing lightly as she spoke. “If you ever cheat, I’ll cut off the source of your trouble.”
She wasn’t joking. Since he wanted a loyal marriage, then both sides had to honor it.
For her, removing a man’s “source” would be ridiculously easy. After all, she was a medical cultivator—skills alone would be enough, even without her cultivation.
“Alright,” Pei Jingzhou agreed without hesitation. Holding the hand that clutched his collar, he guided it down along his chest toward a more sensitive spot, leaning in closer again as Si Qiu tilted her neck upward at just the right moment.
His kiss fell against her neck.
“If I’m ever unfaithful, you can not only take it back—you can take him too.”
As the last word left his lips, he lightly bit the spot over Si Qiu’s artery.
Si Qiu understood what he meant and laughed. “Since you’re so confident, why didn’t you just propose to me back when the old master set those conditions?”
Pei Jingzhou’s downward movement paused. “I was afraid you’d think I only married you for the shares.”
“The shares are given to me, not you. Why are you overthinking it so much? If you had told me earlier, I might not have gone to Japan to make that extra profit. Now it’s become a bit troublesome. What you did basically cut off one of my money-making channels, you know?”
“Got it. Don’t worry, I know what to do. From now on, I’ll make sure to squeeze a bit more out of the old master and put it all under your name. But your move this time was indeed a bit too big. Be careful with your arrangements—especially with the people here at home. If you don’t plan to develop in that direction, you should keep a low profile for the next couple of years.”
He couldn’t help but close the distance she had created, leaning in again.
Si Qiu continued “brainwashing” him, “I know what you’re saying. And you’re right about the old master—if you don’t fight for what he has, it’ll all end up in the hands of those ungrateful wolves. So we take whatever we can, bit by bit. Even if it’s not for the sake of those things, it’s still worth it just to make those two miserable.”
As she spoke, a trace of anger surfaced in her tone. She was the petty kind—if someone offended her and she had the ability, she’d take revenge on the spot. If not, then until the person died, the grudge would never fade.
“Si Qiu, if we want what the old master has, we can’t go too far against them right now. The old master understands this too—that’s why he’s holding tightly onto those shares. But think about it—at his age, how many more years can he live? Sooner or later, those two will have their suffering.”
Si Qiu sneered. “Sooner or later? Who knows—after enough time, maybe you’ll suddenly remember your father-son bond and let them off the hook.”
The moment she said that, Si Qiu suddenly felt like a villain straight out of a TV drama. But then she thought about how stifling it would be to live as some righteous, upright character—better to be the villain instead.
Pei Jingzhou held her hand and kissed it again—he was practically addicted to kissing today. “Qiuqiu, I hate them even more than you do, so just wait patiently. In a while, I’ll find a way to send them abroad first. When the old master is nearing his end, I’ll deal with them properly.”
With just a few sentences, the couple confirmed that their values aligned. That was enough for them to feel at ease and continue their life together—for now.
Their lips, which had been hovering close and distant, finally met. Faint, ambiguous sounds drifted through the air as the entire courtyard was bathed in red decorations and lantern light.
The festive atmosphere and the traditional wedding left a deep impression—years later, people would still talk about it with relish. Yet very few could truly host such a wedding.
It wasn’t just about money. For many, their family background simply didn’t allow such extravagance. And so, even long afterward, whenever their wedding was mentioned, people would sigh in admiration—grand and luxurious.
The following evening, the couple hosted their respective friends at Jian Anxu’s club—a small gathering of sorts.
Fortunately, even if they weren’t familiar with each other, they all belonged to the same social circle. A bit of conversation here and there helped strengthen connections and expand their networks.
