The car door slammed shut with a bang. The boy’s forceful motion made Yu Qi tremble all over. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should also push open the door and go out to check with him. Just then, the body of the car jolted violently again.
Bang! Bang! Bang…
Immediately after came four sharp bursts of tire explosions. All four tires of the car began hissing as they rapidly deflated.
“Ahhh!!”
The boy’s agonized scream echoed in the night, eerie beyond belief. It terrified Yu Qi to the core. Her whole body started shaking… she began to sob from overwhelming fear, but didn’t dare cry too loudly.
“Li Fei!” she called the boy’s name, but received no response.
She even thought about getting out of the car to check, but fear held her like a demon. At that moment, aside from trembling, her entire body had gone weak and numb.
Yu Qi tried desperately to control herself. She forced her hand up with difficulty and locked the car door again. Through the window, she looked around, trying to find the boy’s trace—but saw nothing at all.
The demolition site had returned to silence, as if everything that had just happened was only a nightmare. But the boy’s absence beside her constantly reminded her that the danger was far from over.
“Li… Li Fei, where are you?” After a moment of silence, Yu Qi gathered her courage again, rolled down the window, and shouted out.
Bang!
A loud crash sounded again—this time, something seemed to have landed on the roof of the car.
From inside, Yu Qi saw a dent forming on the roof. She screamed in terror. In panic, she pushed the door open and ran out, wanting to escape this ghostly place immediately.
But the moment she stepped out, she saw the boy lying on top of the car.
His entire body was covered in blood…
And his throat had apparently been slit open, his trachea severed. Blood kept pouring out, soaking the entire car beneath him.
“Ahhh!!”
Yu Qi screamed again. The horrifying sight made her eyes roll back, and she fainted on the spot.
When she woke up, she was already in a hospital ward. The police had arrived and sent her there.
In her statement, Yu Qi insisted that she had not seen the killer at all. This was extremely inconsistent with the situation at the scene.
Because according to her description, the perpetrator must have scratched the car, punctured all four tires, and killed Li Fei right beside the vehicle. Even if she had been terrified, she should at least have seen a shadow of the killer. Not seeing anything at all seemed highly implausible.
However, the police investigation of the scene, as well as the traces left on the vehicle, matched her statement. Moreover, Yu Qi clearly could not have done all this by herself. The car’s dashcam also failed to capture anything—only recording the sounds of what happened that night. This audio evidence fully matched her testimony.
Therefore, the police did not suspect Yu Qi of being the culprit. She quickly completed her statement, was picked up by her father, and after two days of rest returned to school.
“I’m pretty sure this is some kind of spirit entity,” Xiaopeng said confidently after we finished watching the video together.
Based solely on the case and witness description, I couldn’t yet confirm whether this was truly a supernatural incident…
But now I had received emails and messages from Unit 507. That changed everything. Perhaps they already knew something—otherwise they wouldn’t have casually involved us in what should have been police work.
So, this matter definitely needed to be investigated.
I nodded at Xiaopeng and told him to pack up—we were heading to the College of Arts and Sciences. Just then, someone knocked on the office door.
I opened it and saw Zhu Zhu.
She didn’t seem affected at all by the previous skin-peeling monster incident, still acting as usual, always eager to join in on our affairs.
Today she was dressed quite lightly. Standing at the door, she handed me a kraft paper bag.
“What’s this?” I asked, taking it in confusion.
Zhu Zhu shook her head. “I don’t know. Isn’t this your delivery? I found it on the ground outside your door.”
I turned the bag over. There was no information written on it. It felt very light—like it contained documents.
I tore it open and found two sets of credentials and two appointment letters inside.
“Appointment letter for teaching staff at the College of Arts and Sciences, assigned course: Interior Design…”
“When did you two switch careers to become teachers?” Zhu Zhu frowned as she looked at the documents.
“Then what about Shan Shan? Are you not planning to save her anymore?” Zhu Zhu immediately grabbed my collar angrily.
“Miss, calm down first, let me explain!” I hurriedly made her let go.
I let Zhu Zhu come inside and explained what had just happened.
“These appointment letters must also be arranged by the Zero Investigation Group. Didn’t Di Ting say before that when we investigate cases, they would provide us with convenience? I think… this is what he meant,” I said bitterly, looking at the two teaching certificates in my hand.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s head to the school, teachers,” Zhu Zhu stood up eagerly.
Neither I nor Xiaopeng got up immediately. After some hesitation, I said, “The appointment letters are only for the two of us. I think… you’d better not get involved this time.”
Zhu Zhu immediately objected. “So fast you’re trying to ditch me? No way!”
“But that’s a school. You can’t stay there without credentials,” Xiaopeng added bravely, scratching his head.
But Zhu Zhu still refused to back down. “I don’t need you to worry. I have my own way of getting in. If you don’t want me to go, I’m going anyway.”
We exchanged glances. Unable to persuade her, we finally gave in. After packing up, the three of us prepared to leave.
However, we weren’t heading straight to the College of Arts and Sciences yet.
First, I needed to go to the construction materials market in the east of the city, because the victim in this case—Li Fei, Yu Qi’s boyfriend—worked there.
All of this information had been sent to me by Unit 507 in the form of police case files.
We quickly found Li Fei’s workplace in the construction materials market. It was a chain store selling custom home furnishings, and surprisingly, I actually knew the owner.
Originally, I was still thinking about what identity to use to ask questions, but now it seemed unnecessary.
I went into the store and chatted casually with the owner, deliberately dropping hints that I had a big client and might come back next week to check out furniture designs.
The owner treated me very politely, offering cigarettes and tea.
In the end, I introduced Zhu Zhu, saying she was a teacher at the College of Arts and Sciences and my cousin. Li Fei’s girlfriend was her student… so she wanted to understand their situation.
“Boss, what was the relationship between Yu Qi and Li Fei like? Do you know anything about it?” Zhu Zhu asked.
The owner hesitated for a moment before replying, “I’m not one to gossip behind people’s backs, and since the kid’s already gone, it’s not right for me to say this… but as someone who’s been around, I’d still advise you teachers to talk some sense into that girl. Li Fei was not a good boyfriend. She shouldn’t let this affect her life like this.”
“Boss, what do you mean by that?” Xiaopeng suddenly became interested and frowned as he asked.
