This was the first time I had cast a spirit-expelling formation without relying on a physical array. With all of my spiritual power poured into it, the spirit-expelling formation shone with dazzling golden light.
The black flames surrounding Tang Shanshan were visibly falling apart under the tearing force of that golden radiance.
But only I knew the truth.
Although the formation seemed to have the upper hand, I was already struggling to maintain it.
The massive consumption of spiritual power could not be sustained for long. Sweat covered my forehead, and my hands had begun to tremble.
“Quick! Bring over the Nine-Star Divine Incantation Lamp!” I gritted my teeth and shouted to Liu Xiaopeng.
Liu Xiaopeng immediately snapped out of his shock. At top speed, he brought over the photography lamp we had previously used against the humanoid mask entity and assembled it.
“I taught you the incantation and hand seals before. Just follow what I showed you!”
Every word I spoke felt as though it was draining away a huge amount of my strength.
Knowing the gravity of the situation, Liu Xiaopeng hesitated only briefly before turning on the lamp. Following my instructions, he formed the hand seals and chanted the spell.
In an instant, a blinding golden light burst forth, enveloping Tang Shanshan completely.
The black flames immediately writhed like countless ghostly figures. Thick Yin energy was forcibly dragged out of Tang Shanshan’s body by the golden light.
Seeing that the method was working, I was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when the scene before me made my heart lurch once more.
“Turn it off! Now!” I roared at Liu Xiaopeng.
He looked utterly confused. He could tell the method was effective and clearly didn’t want to stop.
Grinding my teeth, I halted the flow of spiritual power into the formation and rushed to the lamp, switching it off myself.
“We can’t forcefully expel it. It’ll damage her primordial spirit!”
Panting heavily, I looked at Tang Shanshan. As the golden light faded, the black Yin energy around her surged once more like raging flames.
Just moments ago, when the Nine-Star Divine Incantation Lamp had activated, I noticed something terrifying.
The golden light wasn’t merely pulling the black Yin energy outward.
It was also dragging at Tang Shanshan’s primordial spirit and soul force.
That scorched black Yin energy was like an incredibly adhesive glue.
In such a short amount of time, it had already fused itself to her primordial spirit.
If we forcibly removed the Yin energy, her primordial spirit and soul force would likely be torn from her body as well.
At that point, she would become a wandering soul, forever unable to return to her body.
Worse still, the Yin energy would probably devour her completely within seconds.
“Then what are we supposed to do? We can’t just watch her like this!” Liu Xiaopeng pointed at Tang Shanshan, who was lying on the floor with only the faintest trace of breath remaining.
My mind raced frantically.
In the end, I sighed and chose the most helpless option available.
“We can only seal the Yin energy inside her body for now and suppress it. We’ll have to wait until we find a way to remove it safely.”
As I spoke, I glanced around the room, instinctively hoping someone would agree—or better yet, come up with a superior solution.
But aside from Liu Xiaopeng, who understood a few basics, the other two might as well have been listening to an entirely different language.
How could they possibly offer any useful response?
With another sigh, I steadied myself and walked over to the unconscious Tang Shanshan.
Gently turning her onto her stomach, I infused spiritual power into my fingertips, using them like blades.
Then I began carving a formation onto her back—a fusion of the Daoist Purifying Heart Mantra and the Spirit-Confining Mantra.
“Supreme Star of the Heavenly Platform, respond without cease.
Drive away evil and bind demons, protect life and safeguard the body.
Let wisdom shine clear, let mind and spirit remain tranquil.
May the three souls endure forever, and may the seven spirits never scatter!”
Blood seeped from Tang Shanshan’s snow-white skin.
My heart ached at the sight, but there was no other choice.
As I carefully traced each line of the formation onto her skin, I continuously recited the Purifying Heart Mantra, hoping to suppress the Yin energy as quickly as possible.
Three minutes later, the composite spell formation was finally complete.
After wiping the blood from her back, I bit my finger and let a drop of blood infused with spiritual power fall onto the center of the formation.
The moment the formation activated, I channeled every remaining trace of spiritual power within me into Tang Shanshan’s body through the formation’s core.
Only then did the black Yin energy surrounding her gradually come under control.
Her body remained ice-cold, and her lips were still dark and blackened.
“Shanshan! Shanshan!”
Zhu Zhu rushed forward, desperately trying to wake her.
But no matter how loudly she called, it was completely futile.
Having exhausted the last shred of spiritual power in my body, my legs gave out and I collapsed beside Tang Shanshan.
Forcing myself to stay conscious, I lifted her head and rested it on my lap.
Then I looked at Zhu Zhu.
“Call an ambulance. Now!”
“I’ll do it immediately!”
Uncle Tian answered before anyone else and sprinted out to make the call.
Half an hour later, Tang Shanshan was admitted to the hospital closest to the Zhu family estate.
The moment she arrived, the doctors placed her directly into the ICU.
After a series of examinations failed to identify the cause of her condition, they eventually transferred her to a regular inpatient ward at my insistence.
With Zhu Zhu—the eldest daughter of the Zhu family—present, there was naturally no concern about expenses.
Tang Shanshan was assigned to the best private room available, complete with dedicated nursing care.
A full day passed.
She still hadn’t regained consciousness.
It was already late at night.
I sent Zhu Zhu and everyone else home to rest and remained alone in the hospital room to monitor her condition.
Lying quietly in bed, Tang Shanshan looked pale and fragile.
Gone was the domineering, fiery personality she usually displayed.
As I looked at her delicate features, a sense of guilt weighed heavily on my heart.
Maybe I should never have accepted the Zhu family’s case in the first place.
If I hadn’t, she would never have come into contact with the Extremely Yin Ancient Jade.
Or perhaps I should never have acquired that strange Yin artifact.
Maybe I shouldn’t have rented her house.
Maybe I shouldn’t have become so close to her.
If any of those things had been different, perhaps she would still be that lively, energetic landlady she used to be.
Lost in these thoughts, my mind grew heavier and heavier.
Before I realized it, I drifted into a dazed sleep and fell into darkness.
“Hello there. You’re the one who broke my formation, aren’t you?”
A crisp voice echoed through the darkness.
I tried to figure out where I was.
Then, suddenly, a spotlight appeared and flashed on, illuminating a spot less than five meters away.
Standing there was a man dressed in a white suit.
His sharply defined features were strikingly handsome.
His face possessed the angular structure often seen in foreigners, yet his eyes and skin tone were unmistakably Chinese.
Squinting at him in confusion, I stared for a long moment before remembering that I had been sitting in Tang Shanshan’s hospital room just moments earlier.
This place…
It felt like a dream.
But if I was dreaming, why was I dreaming about a man who looked like he belonged in some idol boy band?
Shouldn’t it be a long-legged beauty from a girl group instead?
The man turned toward me.
His exquisitely handsome face seemed almost to glow.
If Tang Shanshan were standing beside me right now, then with her hopeless fangirl tendencies, she’d probably have stars in her eyes and drool running from her mouth on the spot.
