“Have you heard of werewolves?” I asked, looking at Liu Xiaopeng and Tang Shanshan.

Both of them nodded.

“I’ve seen them in movies. I always thought they were fake, but now… I’m not so sure anymore,” Tang Shanshan said.

“In ancient Western legends, werewolves only reveal their true form on nights of the full moon. And the transformation is extremely painful. Some of them, even those who appear elegant in daily life, are taken over by a bloodthirsty urge once they transform.”

I sat down and continued, “It’s said that after each transformation, they must eat a human heart to suppress their bloodlust and return to normal.”

“Look,” I pointed at the girl’s recorded time of death on the computer, then opened a lunar calendar app on my phone. “A week ago was mid-month—most likely the full moon night.”

Liu Xiaopeng quickly clicked the mouse and pulled up the professor’s file.

“It’s also mid-month!” Tang Shanshan exclaimed.

“Not bad, huh, you little Taoist fraud? How did you figure that out?” Tang Shanshan looked at me in surprise.

I slightly raised my chin, putting on a mysterious expression. “After so many years in this line of work, my reasoning and logic aren’t something ordinary people can compare to. You still have a lot to learn from me!”

“Enough!” Tang Shanshan rolled her eyes. “Give you a compliment and you immediately forget your last name, huh?”

“So what now? What do we do next?” she asked, crossing her arms.

“Investigate the case, of course. Isn’t that obvious?” I pulled up the dead girl’s information again and pointed to an address.

“Why not start from the first case?” Tang Shanshan asked. She was referring to the professor who died the same way.

I shook my head and glanced at her. “Are you stupid? The first case was two years ago… and this girl died a week ago. Which one do you think is easier to dig up clues from?”

Tang Shanshan was unconvinced and even punched me a couple of times in protest. “That’s not necessarily true! Old police investigations were more detailed too!”

I ignored her and didn’t bother arguing further.

Liu Xiaopeng seemed to have had enough of our bickering. He sighed, shook his head, unplugged the USB drive from the computer, and walked out on his own.

Tang Shanshan snorted at me and chased after Liu Xiaopeng. I also sighed, thinking that for the rest of my life I’d probably be arguing with this young lady every day.

We weren’t in a rush to set off immediately, so we stayed at the 507 Institute for two more days and brought along a lot of interesting things.

The 507 Institute had a specially established equipment R&D department. Its purpose was to develop specialized gear for operatives of the Zero Investigation Unit when dealing with spirit entities or supernatural incidents.

When I heard about it, I couldn’t help feeling a bit proud and even boasted to the others that I had already been doing this kind of work on my own for a long time.

Over the years, I had indeed tinkered with many strange devices—figuring out how to apply techniques from the Heaven-Sealing Mysterious Scripture in the simplest, most direct, and efficient way possible. That had always been my research focus.

Spirit-binding rulers, spiritual energy batteries, even the earlier spirit searchlights—all of these were results of that approach.

Now that I heard the 507 Institute was doing something similar, I couldn’t help being curious. Fortunately, we were now part of it and had access to their equipment.

So in those two days, I spent quite a bit of time in the equipment department and even got the chance to test weapons.

In the end, each of the three of us selected three pieces of equipment that suited us best and loaded them into the car. It was fair to say we left fully equipped.

We first returned to the office to pick up some of my previous gear.

Just as we arrived downstairs, we saw a familiar figure.

It was none other than the famous young lady of the Zhu family—Zhu Zhu.

She had a tall figure, and since the weather was getting warmer, her outfit was naturally lighter… she wore a dress, with only light makeup and a hint of lipstick.

Even so, she still attracted a lot of attention. And right now, she was leaning casually against her red Ferrari.

I stopped the car and glanced at Liu Xiaopeng in the passenger seat, sighing. “Bro, you’re on your own.”

Tang Shanshan popped her head out from the back seat. “Listen here, you brat! Zhu Zhu is my best friend. If you dare do her wrong, I—I—”

She repeated “I” for a long time, but still couldn’t bring herself to finish the threat.

I couldn’t help but find it funny. She was probably trying to say she’d burn him alive with a fire talisman—but then realized Liu Xiaopeng’s power was higher than hers and he could even summon the Nine Sons of the Dragon, so she chickened out a bit.

I pulled Tang Shanshan out of the car, telling her not to be a third wheel.

About ten minutes later, while we were packing things upstairs, we suddenly heard a loud “bang” of a car door shutting from downstairs.

We looked at each other and rushed to the window. Zhu Zhu was already getting into her car…

She seemed angry. She floored the accelerator, and the red Ferrari roared as it sped away, leaving Liu Xiaopeng standing there watching it disappear.

“This kid really doesn’t know how to comfort a girl,” I sighed.

“As if you know how!” Tang Shanshan shot back immediately.

“If I didn’t, how would someone have agreed to waive my rent?” I said smugly.

“I never said I’d waive your rent!” she snapped, raising the spiritual energy battery in her hand threateningly.

I broke into a cold sweat, thinking that if that thing exploded, not only would we be done for—the whole building might be leveled.

We were still bickering when Liu Xiaopeng came in, and we immediately pretended nothing had happened.

“Let’s go. We should set off now,” he said.

“Just the three of us?” I asked after a moment of hesitation.
