As before, I took the lead, holding a flashlight as I stepped through the basement entrance.
The basement was much larger than I had imagined. After descending a flight of stairs, we found ourselves facing a corridor lined with numerous rooms. I had no idea what they had once been used for.
I kicked open one of the doors and went inside to search.
To my surprise, Zi seemed to have found some courage. He kicked open a neighboring door and cautiously entered it as well.
I looked around the room I had entered and found it filled with piles of discarded medical equipment, a sight that sent chills down my spine.
With a sigh, I turned to search the next room. This time, the door was only half-closed.
Frowning, I shone my flashlight through the crack. The moment the beam entered, something inside rolled off and hit the floor with a clatter.
I immediately slipped into the room and saw a boy lying on the ground. It seemed he had just regained consciousness. Startled by my flashlight, he scrambled into a corner, knocking over a pile of junk behind him with a series of metallic crashes.
“Are you Liu Yuting’s boyfriend?” I asked.
The boy backed away several steps, staring at me warily. He clearly didn’t trust me.
I waved my hand.
“Don’t be afraid. Yuting asked me to find you.”
“How is Tingting? Where is she?” the boy asked as he finally lowered his guard and climbed to his feet.
“She’s safe,” I said, helping him up. “What about you? How did you end up unconscious here?”
“I… while I was running away earlier, I tripped over some junk and fell here. Everything went black after that.”
He rubbed the large bump on his head.
“Running away?” I frowned. “What did you see?”
“I saw a girl with long hair in the basement. Her face… her face was absolutely horrifying!”
The boy’s eyes filled with fear.
“Did she attack you?” I asked.
He shook his head awkwardly.
“N-No… but something even scarier happened. She kissed me!”
“She kissed you?”
My eyes widened.
“Yeah! Isn’t that even more disgusting than attacking me? That face of hers…”
Growing agitated, he continued with a look of revulsion.
“The lighting was really dim at first. I only saw a long-haired girl, so I thought Tingting had followed me down here. When she came up and kissed me, I didn’t reject her, but…”
He shuddered.
“When I brushed her hair aside, I saw her face. It was completely twisted and distorted. It was terrifying! So I ran away and tried to hide in here, but I tripped and fell.”
“Other than kissing you, she really didn’t attack you?” I asked again.
I’d never heard of a ghost kissing someone before.
The boy thought for a moment before replying.
“When she was very close to me, it felt like she was whispering something in my ear…”
“What was she saying?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know. The moment I saw her face, I was so scared that I couldn’t hear what she was saying.”
As he spoke, Zi and Tingting arrived.
“Are you okay?”
The moment Tingting saw the boy standing beside me, she rushed forward and grabbed his hand.
The boy forced a smile and nodded.
“I’m fine.”
“Let’s get you two out of here first,” I sighed. “And remember, it’s best not to come into places like this again.”
I turned and left the room, intending to escort the two teenagers out of the psychiatric hospital.
We stepped back into the corridor, with me in front and Zi bringing up the rear.
Just as we were about to reach the basement stairs, a loud bang suddenly echoed behind us.
One of the doors along the corridor had swung open by itself.
“My arm!”
At the same time, Tingting cried out. Something seemed to have grabbed her arm.
Before I could investigate, she was suddenly yanked into the newly opened room by an invisible force.
Bang!
The door slammed shut.
“Tingting!”
The boy shouted. He had tried to grab his girlfriend’s arm, but the force had struck too suddenly. His hand slipped away before he could hold on.
Li Zi jumped in fright as well, but quickly recovered. The three of us rushed to the door and tried to force it open.
But it felt as though something weighing a thousand pounds was braced against it from the other side. No matter how hard we pushed, it wouldn’t budge.
“Help! Open the door!”
Tingting’s terrified cries came from inside.
Gritting my teeth, I gathered spiritual power in my hands and summoned Demonic-Burning Flame to scorch the door.
The wooden panel cracked and split under the flames.
Only then did I realize there was a sheet of iron hidden behind the wood.
This room had probably been a confinement cell used for violent patients.
I cursed under my breath and began channeling spiritual energy to enhance my strength, preparing to tear the door apart by force.
But then the cries for help from inside suddenly stopped.
My heart sank.
As I continued slamming into the door, I shouted to Tingting:
“Don’t be afraid of them! The calmer you are, the less they’ll hurt you! Face them directly and listen to what they’re trying to tell you!”
Based on what had happened earlier to Li Zi and the boy, I had reached a conclusion.
The spirits of the patients didn’t actually seem intent on harming people.
Instead, they appeared desperate to tell intruders something.
Only by remaining calm in front of them could one avoid provoking them.
“I can’t do it…”
Tingting’s sobbing voice drifted from inside.
Mixed with it were other sounds—strange, eerie sounds unlike anything normal.
“You have to!”
I continued shouting.
By now, the iron door had been dented inward by my repeated blows.
Using every ounce of strength I had, I delivered a powerful kick.
With a thunderous crash, the door finally collapsed.
My flashlight beam swept into the room.
The scene before us instantly made my scalp tingle.
Tingting stood pressed against a corner wall.
The rest of the room was packed with ghosts.
They all looked grotesque—crooked mouths, twisted eyes, and heads covered with various scars and needle marks.
Every one of them faced Tingting, surrounding her completely.
Yet none of them were attacking.
Their lips moved faintly, as though each was trying to tell her something.
The instant my flashlight illuminated them, the entire crowd of spirits vanished from sight with a whoosh.
Li Zi and the boy immediately rushed in and helped Tingting out.
“Are you okay?”
The boy held her hand tightly, his face full of concern.
Cold sweat covered Tingting’s face, but the terror she had shown earlier was gone.
She shook her head.
“I’m fine.”
Then she looked at me and said:
“You were right. Once I calmed down and faced them, they didn’t try to hurt me at all. Instead…”
“They wanted to tell me something.”
