Zhu Qingfeng nodded quickly and began speaking to everyone:

“A few days ago, Comrade Zhan Songbai came to the temple looking for me. He said he wanted my help dealing with his niece-in-law, Xiao Wange. He told me that Xiao Wange caused his wife to end up in prison, tearing his family apart. He said he hated that girl, hated her so much he wanted her dead.

So the two of us came up with the idea to make her appear as a snake demon. Once she turned into a snake demon, we could take advantage of the situation and kill her. But I didn’t expect things to change, and I never imagined things would develop into what they are today.”

Hearing this, everyone became even angrier than before.

Zhao Lijuan nearly rushed forward to beat Zhan Songbai up. “Zhan Songbai, you’re truly heartless! You actually wanted to kill Zeyan’s wife? I think it’d be better to kill you first—you’re the real menace hurting people in this village!”

“Zhan Songbai, you’re truly vicious. Before, when your wife killed someone, everyone said your wife was cruel and evil. But now it seems you’re just as bad as she is. Rotten to the core. There’s no saving either of you.”

“That whole Zhan Songbai family doesn’t have a single decent person. Poor Zhan Zeyan, having to be relatives with people like them.”

“Exactly. If I were Zeyan, I’d have been heartbroken and depressed long ago.”

The villagers all joined in, talking one after another, full of disdain for Zhan Songbai.

Zhan Songbai felt utterly humiliated.

But more than humiliation—he was furious.

He clenched his teeth so hard they made a grinding sound.

He glared at Zhu Qingfeng, who had exposed him, hatred flashing in his eyes. Then he turned toward Zhao Lijuan and the others, shouting angrily:

“Yes, I’m vicious—so what?! Yes, I wanted to kill Zeyan’s wife—so what?! If you have the ability, go report me to the police! If you can get me arrested, if you can send me to jail, then I’ll admit you’re capable!”

He had originally wanted to defend himself. But he was too angry—so angry he didn’t want to waste breath explaining. After all, no matter what he said, these people wouldn’t believe him. So he might as well admit it outright.

Might as well vent all the hatred in his heart.

His words made the village chief and village party secretary look extremely displeased.

These days, the state promoted science and technology. Superstition and ghost-related accusations were the opposite of that. Reporting this to the police would amount to nothing.

Zhan Songbai was truly cunning—thinking of such a despicable method to harm someone. And a method that couldn’t be punished by law!

That was exactly why he dared to speak so arrogantly now.

The village party secretary glared at him coldly. “Zhan Songbai, don’t get too cocky. As the saying goes, evil brings its own retribution, just as good brings good returns. If you harm others like this today, sooner or later you will suffer retribution. I’ll be waiting to see Heaven deal with you!”

As village party secretary, he shouldn’t have said something like that. But Zhan Zeyan’s mother had once helped his wife. Zhan Zeyan’s family had helped his family. Seeing their benefactors harmed like this—if he didn’t speak out, he would feel guilty.

Once he finished speaking, many villagers immediately echoed him. They also said they were waiting to see karmic punishment fall on Zhan Songbai, waiting to watch him be taught a harsh lesson.

Zhan Songbai’s face turned dark with rage.

He was about to retort, when Xiao Wange suddenly looked at him and said:

“Uncle, the things you did… they’re going to be exposed soon. When everything comes to light, your wish to go to jail will finally come true.”

Hearing this, Zhan Songbai’s breath caught involuntarily.

He looked at Xiao Wange. What did this brat mean? Her words sounded like… she knew his secret?

But he had kept that secret tightly hidden. Only he and his wife knew about it. He would never have told Xiao Wange. And his wife definitely wouldn’t tell her either. So how could Xiao Wange know?

No—she must be bluffing. She must be trying to scare him.

He forced his expression to turn cold and snapped, “What are you talking about? I didn’t do anything! Xiao Wange, stop trying to frighten me!”

Then he called for Zhan Hongxin, wanting to go home.

But just then, the Hu family arrived—led by Madam Hu.

The moment she arrived, she roared:

“Zhan Hongxin, you lazy good-for-nothing woman! I told you to stay home and cook pig slop, and you ran back to your parents’ house to slack off?! You lazy thing! Our village has never had someone as lazy as you!”

Madam Hu bared her teeth when she spoke, looking fierce and menacing.

Xiao Wange and Zhan Zeyan quickly stepped aside, leaving the scene to the Hu family—they knew chaos was about to erupt.

Now that the Hu family was here, Zhan Songbai and Zhan Hongxin were in for trouble.

When Zhan Hongxin saw Madam Hu, her scalp tingled. She hated this old witch—truly hated her! Last night’s beating had been extremely painful; every hit had been heavy, like Madam Hu was trying to kill her. The woman was practically a demonic crone.

If possible, she wished she could hack the old crone to death!

“Get back home! Hurry and cook the pig slop! And wash the laundry! You lazy woman—if you dare slack off again, I’ll beat you to death!”

Madam Hu yelled, her eyes bulging like copper bells as she glared at Zhan Hongxin.

Grinding her teeth, Zhan Hongxin stormed back, “I’m not going back! You old hag! I told you—I’m divorcing your son! I will never live with that ugly freak ever again!”

Madam Hu’s face instantly changed.

She turned to the other villagers and shouted, “Listen! Listen to her! That lazy woman lived off us, ate our food, did nothing, and now she dares call me an old hag? Tell me—what kind of daughter-in-law talks like this to her mother-in-law? Have you ever seen one?!”

The villagers shook their heads. No, they had never seen such a disrespectful daughter-in-law. They all commented that Zhan Hongxin’s behaviour was excessive.

Zhan Hongxin was furious. Did none of these people see her injuries? She had been beaten black and blue! Going back would be insanity! Instead of helping her, these villagers were siding with the old witch. It was infuriating!

She tried to speak, but Madam Hu shouted at the two strong men behind her:

“Go grab her and take her home!”

The two men—Hu Laizi’s cousins, also Madam Hu’s nephews—stepped forward with a “Got it!” and moved to seize Zhan Hongxin.

Zhan Hongxin panicked and hid behind her father.

Zhan Songbai shielded his daughter, glared at the two men, and yelled at Madam Hu, “My daughter says she won’t go back to your house—then you can’t force her! If she wants to divorce your son, then I think this matter—”

“Divorce?! You think divorce is something she can decide on her own? What do you think our Hu family is? I’m telling you—whether they divorce is up to us! When we say they can divorce, they can. And right now—we aren’t divorcing! So this lazy woman must return with us!”

Madam Hu emphasized every word, then shoved Zhan Songbai aside.

Zhan Songbai’s face darkened, and he raised his hand to hit her.

But the two strong men quickly blocked him, preventing him from getting near Madam Hu.

The other Hu family members rushed up to grab Zhan Hongxin.

She tried to run into her courtyard, but before she reached the gate, they caught her.

They held her tight and began dragging her toward the Hu household.

Zhan Hongda and Zhan Hongjun walked out of their courtyard. Seeing the chaos, both frowned.

Zhan Hongxin saw them and cried out desperately:

“Big Brother! Third Brother! Help me! Please help me! I don’t want to go back to the Hu family! I’ll never go back!”

Zhan Hongda rolled up his sleeves and started forward to hit the Hu family members holding her.

But those men were tall, muscular, and strong from years of farm work—clearly not people to mess with. One of them rolled up his sleeves too, looked at Zhan Hongda with disdain, and sneered:

“Come on, then! If I don’t beat you until your teeth scatter all over the ground, I won’t be surnamed Hu!”

Zhan Hongda: “…”

Seeing the man’s muscles, his steps froze. He didn’t dare go forward—and even took two steps back.

Zhan Hongjun wanted to help too, but the men’s size terrified him.

He was just a frail scholar—how could he fight rough farmers? He’d be no match.

So he also backed up, standing at the threshold.

Seeing them retreat, Zhan Hongxin felt both furious and terrified.

“You two are useless! You’re my brothers! How can you stand there doing nothing while they drag me away?!”

Zhan Hongda and Zhan Hongjun: “…”

They wanted to help—but they truly couldn’t.

Zhan Songbai, gritting his teeth in rage, yelled at Madam Hu:

“This is kidnapping! Do you know that? Kidnapping is illegal! Don’t you believe I can report you to the police?! Don’t you believe I—”

“Report me? Go ahead. If you can get me punished, then you’re capable,” Madam Hu said fearlessly, not intimidated at all.

She was just taking her daughter-in-law home. How was that kidnapping? A daughter-in-law belonged to the husband’s family. They had spent money to marry her—Zhan Songbai’s family couldn’t take the money and then deny the relationship. If he wanted to call the police, she’d love to ask which law says they can’t bring their own daughter-in-law home.

Zhan Songbai choked on her words.

He had, moments ago, said something similar—using that same logic to shut down the village party secretary.

And now the exact same argument was being thrown back at him.

Truly… what goes around comes around.

“Let’s go! Take her back! The pig slop still isn’t cooked yet—get her home to do it!” Madam Hu barked, proudly marching ahead.

The Hu family dragged Zhan Hongxin behind her.

Zhan Hongxin’s face went pale. She looked around—the villagers were watching the drama, not one stepping in to help her.

She hated their coldness.

Then she turned her gaze toward Zhan Zeyan, her eyes full of pleading.

“Brother Zeyan… please help me… I beg you, help me… I don’t want to go back to the Hu family. Hu Laizi is disgusting. I don’t want to be married to him or live with him!”
