Xiao Wange froze for a moment — so tonight, he’d been planning to… get intimate with her?
“Wange…” He reached out gently, resting his hand on her shoulder, his gaze deep and earnest. “Would you… be willing to accept me?”
His tone was hesitant, almost nervous — afraid that she might say those three dreaded words: “I’m not willing.”
Xiao Wange yawned.
A trace of weariness colored her expression as she said slowly, “We’re husband and wife. Of course I’m willing. It’s just…”
The moment she said she was willing, his heart leapt with joy.
An unrestrained excitement and happiness appeared on his handsome face. He quickly asked, “Just what?”
Xiao Wange yawned again. “It’s just that I’m really sleepy right now and want to go to bed.” That drama she’d just watched really had a sleep-inducing effect — ever since she finished it, she’d been ready to fall asleep.
Zhan Zeyan: “…”
Seeing her yawn twice in a row, clearly exhausted, a faint smile curved his lips. His low, warm voice said, “Alright then. Go to sleep.”
As he spoke, he started to reach out to pull her into his arms — but after hesitating for a moment, he stopped.
He was afraid she might not like being held while sleeping. Afraid she might… get angry.
“Mm. Good night,” Xiao Wange murmured tiredly, closing her eyes and soon drifting off.
Her breathing gradually evened out.
Zhan Zeyan, watching her sleeping beside him, couldn’t help the faint smile tugging at his lips.
She hadn’t rejected him. She’d said… she was willing.
Perhaps, in this marriage, he wasn’t as alone as he had thought.
Maybe their relationship… could soon take another step forward.
His gaze lingered on her for a moment. Then, gently pulling the blanket up around her, he closed his eyes as well.
The next morning, just after breakfast, visitors arrived.
And the guests were none other than Mu Yunhao and Qin Xiuwan.
Seeing Mu Yunhao, little Zhao Zhao lit up with joy.
He ran out of the courtyard toward the car and looked up at Mu Yunhao. “Uncle Mu, you’re here!”
The boy’s face glowed with excitement — he was clearly thrilled to see him.
Mu Yunhao bent down, scooping Zhao Zhao up with a gentle smile. “Mm, uncle came early because I needed to talk to your mother.”
Qin Xiuwan also got out of the car, one hand supporting her swollen belly as she looked toward the courtyard.
Inside, Xiao Wange and Zhan Zeyan quickly came out to greet them.
“So Mr. Mu and this comrade know each other?” Xiao Wange asked, glancing at Qin Xiuwan.
Mu Yunhao nodded and introduced her. “Her surname is Qin — Xiuwan. She’s my aunt’s daughter. We came today because her family has run into some trouble.”
Qin Xiuwan’s eyes were red and swollen, clearly from crying.
She stepped forward quickly, pleading, “Comrade, please help my family. Just like you said before, we’ve really run into disaster. My parents are bedridden, and my older brother… he fell down the stairs and was sent to the hospital. The doctor says his life’s hanging by a thread — that he might not survive the night. You said if we ever got into trouble, we could come find you. I thought maybe… you could save my family from this?”
Tears welled up again in her eyes as she spoke, full of desperation.
Mu Yunhao’s expression darkened slightly, his voice calm but heavy with worry. “Comrade Xiao, my aunt’s family’s situation is extremely serious — even more so than what my family went through. I believe only you can help them now. Please… help save them.”
Xiao Wange looked between the two. “I’ll help. I just didn’t expect the calamity to arrive so quickly. I thought it would take a day or two.”
So that person had already made their move. So impatient — eager to seize the Qin family’s wealth.
“Wait a moment. I’ll change my clothes and go with you.” With that, she turned back into the courtyard.
Zhan Zeyan stood by the gate, his eyes dark, a faint chill in his expression.
He looked at Mu Yunhao and Qin Xiuwan. “Would you like to come in for some water?”
“No need, we’ll wait here,” Mu Yunhao said politely but coolly. “I’m sure Comrade Xiao will be out soon.”
Zhan Zeyan didn’t reply — he only nodded and went back inside.
Mu Yunhao’s gaze followed the tall, broad-shouldered man. His eyes narrowed slightly, growing darker.
A few minutes later, Xiao Wange and Zhan Zeyan emerged together.
Zhan Zeyan locked the courtyard gate.
Mu Yunhao noticed and frowned subtly.
Was this man… coming with them to the county?
Xiao Wange, holding her husband’s arm, smiled faintly. “I forgot to introduce you earlier — this is my husband, Zhan Zeyan. He used to serve in the army and just returned a few days ago. He’ll be coming with us to the county today. He’s good in combat — maybe he can help with what’s happening.”
In truth, she hadn’t wanted him to come. She wanted him to stay home and watch their child.
But Zhan Zeyan insisted on going.
He said he couldn’t rest easy letting her go alone. That he worried something might happen. That he wanted to be there in case she needed help.
So… he came along.
Mu Yunhao’s gaze flickered slightly, but he said politely, “Then thank you, Comrade Zhan, for your help today.”
Zhan Zeyan replied calmly, “You’re welcome.”
They all got into the car.
Every time Zhao Zhao rode in a car, he was full of excitement.
He chattered happily for a few minutes, then turned to Zhan Zeyan. “Daddy, I really like this car! I wish I could ride it every day.”
The car went so fast — it was amazing. If only their family had one too, then he could go to town to play whenever he wanted.
But as soon as he said that, he realized it was the wrong thing to say.
Their family wasn’t rich. Cars like this were only for wealthy people. Saying something like that might make his dad feel bad.
He bit his lip, trying to think of a way to make up for it — but before he could, Mu Yunhao, who was driving, said lightly, “If Zhao Zhao likes it that much, you could come live at my house. Then you could ride in a car every day.”
It sounded like a harmless joke to a child — but in Zhan Zeyan’s ears, it struck a nerve.
Through the rearview mirror, Mu Yunhao glanced at Xiao Wange again. “Comrade Xiao, my mother and grandmother were talking about you yesterday. They’d like to invite you to our home as a guest — to learn some of your Daoist arts. Do you have time soon? If you do, could you bring Zhao Zhao along?”
