Even though Zhan Zeyan wasn’t at home, the New Year still had to be celebrated.
After breakfast, Xiao Wange took Zhaozhao to town to have some fun. There was a lion dance in town—children loved that sort of thing—so she brought Zhaozhao along to join the excitement.
After watching the lion dance performance, she took Zhaozhao to buy some toys that children liked.
Once they were done shopping, she brought him back to the village.
By the time they returned, it was just about time to start cooking lunch. Seeing smoke rising from every household and hearing the laughter and chatter of families coming from other homes, Xiao Wange lifted her head and looked at the sky. Zhan Zeyan, I hope that next Spring Festival, we can spend it together. I hope that next year, our family can be like other families too—full of laughter and joy.
She curved her lips into a smile, took Zhaozhao by the hand, and quickly walked toward her own home.
…
The days passed one by one, and in the blink of an eye it was the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
The fifteenth day is known as the Lantern Festival, and it is usually a day for celebration.
Even though there were only two people at home, Xiao Wange still planned to cook some good food to celebrate.
That morning, she took Zhaozhao to town and bought quite a lot of tasty things, planning to prepare hearty dishes for both lunch and dinner.
However…
Just after she finished cooking lunch, a voice came from the courtyard outside. “Wange…”
Hearing the clear male voice, both Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao froze for a moment in the kitchen.
Zhaozhao’s eyes brightened. He looked up at Xiao Wange and said, “Mom, it’s Dad’s voice. Dad’s back.”
Xiao Wange frowned slightly. She set down the spatula in her hand, took Zhaozhao by the hand, and walked out of the kitchen.
In the courtyard, Zhan Zeyan and several of his comrades were stepping over the threshold into the yard.
When he saw Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao come out, Zhan Zeyan’s brows and eyes instantly softened, and he said to them, “I’m back.”
The comrades behind him, upon seeing Xiao Wange, first flashed looks of amazement, then greeted in unison, “Hello, Sister-in-law.”
They hadn’t expected their leader’s wife to be so beautiful—beautiful to the point that she looked like a movie star.
No—movie stars weren’t even this beautiful.
Xiao Wange looked at the comrades and gave them a gentle smile. “Hello.”
Oh my—this smile was even more incredible. When she smiled, she looked just like a fairy.
The comrades were all stunned by her smile, marveling at how someone could be so beautiful.
And yet their leader—honestly—his wife was clearly this gorgeous, but he used to say she was ordinary. If this counted as ordinary, then what would other women be?
Zhan Zeyan walked toward Xiao Wange, his tone softening as well. “We finished the mission ahead of schedule, so we came back early.”
Xiao Wange smiled. “It’s good that you’re back.”
Although he had said before leaving that he would try to finish the mission early, she hadn’t expected them to complete it this quickly. She had thought it would take many more days before he could come home.
Zhaozhao rushed up to Zhan Zeyan, hugged his legs, and said, “Dad, you’re finally back. Mom and I missed you so much.”
Xiao Wange: “……”
The corner of her mouth twitched as she looked down at the child.
This child… saying such blunt truths in front of outsiders—wasn’t that just making her embarrassed for no reason?
Hearing this, the comrades looked at Xiao Wange, then at Zhan Zeyan, and all exchanged teasing looks as they said to him, “Boss, you’re really lucky.”
With such a beautiful wife who missed him so much—if that wasn’t happiness, then what was? They were honestly a little envious.
Zhan Zeyan didn’t respond to his men. Instead, he picked Zhaozhao up in his arms and looked at Xiao Wange as he said, “I missed you too.”
