Does Zhan Zeyan have the ability to enter dreams?
But that was impossible. Zhan Zeyan didn’t know any spells—how could he possibly enter someone’s dream?
To enter dreams, one had to possess extremely powerful magic. And Zhan Zeyan didn’t even know the most basic spells. Advanced magic was even more out of the question for him.
Unless Zhan Zeyan had been hiding something from her—hiding the fact that he could use magic.
A flash of insight crossed her mind, and she suddenly remembered something.
She thought of that “big figure”! She remembered that the “big figure” was connected to Zhan Zeyan in many ways.
Previously, she had sensed traces of Zhan Zeyan’s aura around that “big figure,” but she hadn’t linked the two together at all.
Now, however… could it be that the “big figure” was actually Zhan Zeyan himself? That Zhan Zeyan could use magic, but had been hiding it from her, and had even been secretly doing many things behind the scenes?
But…
She felt that this was unlikely.
Although she hadn’t spent a very long time with Zhan Zeyan, from what she knew of him, she could sense that he was a good person. She could feel… the kindness deep within his heart.
Unless he was truly an exceptional actor. Unless he was… an unbelievably skilled “performer.”
“Mama, I think the Daddy in my dream was a bit strange. He looked like my dad, but… also not like him.” Zhaozhao’s voice interrupted Xiao Wange’s thoughts.
Xiao Wange was slightly startled. She looked at Zhaozhao and asked, “Why do you say that, Zhaozhao?”
Zhaozhao scratched his little head and thought for a second. “I just felt he wasn’t my dad. But he looked exactly like Daddy, and he even gave me a present. So I… I don’t really know what’s going on either.”
He then told Xiao Wange about his previous dream.
In that earlier dream, the Daddy dressed in black hadn’t paid him any attention at all and had been very cold toward him. At the time, Zhaozhao had already felt that this Daddy didn’t seem like his real father.
And in this dream, although this Daddy did respond to him and even gave him a gift, he still had the same feeling as before. He felt that this Daddy, just like the black-clad Daddy from the earlier dream, didn’t seem like his biological father.
As Xiao Wange listened to Zhaozhao’s words, her brows knitted tightly together, and a terrifying thought suddenly surfaced in her mind.
Could it be that there was someone else in this world who looked exactly like Zhan Zeyan?
And that person possessed powerful magic and was not someone of the mortal world?
After frowning and pondering for a while, she took the jade pendant from Zhaozhao’s hand and said to him, “Let Mama keep this jade pendant for now. When you need it, Mama will give it back to you.”
Zhaozhao nodded. “Okay, Mama.”
Xiao Wange helped Zhaozhao get dressed and had him get out of bed, then she quickly put on her own clothes as well.
She slipped the jade pendant into her pocket, deciding that after breakfast, she would study it carefully.
However…
After breakfast, before Xiao Wange even had the chance to take out the jade pendant, a visitor arrived.
The visitor was dressed in a military uniform and carried many gifts as he entered Xiao Wange’s courtyard.
When he entered the village, many people saw him. As a result, many villagers guessed that he must be one of Zhan Zeyan’s comrades-in-arms. They assumed that since Zhan Zeyan was dead, and his wife and child were pitiful, this comrade had come especially to visit them.
After entering the courtyard, the man looked at Xiao Wange and smiled slightly. “Hello, Sister-in-law. You must be Comrade Xiao Wange, Captain Zhan’s wife, right? My name is Qiu Haiyang. I’m one of Captain Zhan’s subordinates.”
As he spoke, he looked at Zhaozhao beside her. “You must be Zhaozhao. Zhaozhao really is just as Captain Zhan described—truly adorable.”
A pure, friendly smile hung on his face, making him look like a genuinely good person.
But…
Xiao Wange stared at him for a couple of seconds, then curled her lips into a cold smile.
This man… had come to avenge Bai Caixuan, hadn’t he?
She reached out and took the gifts, saying, “Thank you for the gifts. You haven’t had breakfast yet, have you? Would you like me to make you something to eat?”
Since this man wanted to take revenge for Bai Caixuan, she wanted to see exactly what tricks he planned to use.
Qiu Haiyang scratched his head with a simple, honest grin. “Then thank you, Sister-in-law.”
Xiao Wange carried the gifts into the main room and set them down, invited Qiu Haiyang to sit, then turned around and brought out a kettle of tea from the kitchen.
She poured him a cup of water and smiled faintly. “Have some water first. I’ll make you some noodles.”
“Alright, sorry to trouble you, Sister-in-law,” Qiu Haiyang replied, still wearing that honest smile as he accepted the cup.
He was handsome, the kind of “fresh-faced young guy” people talked about in later times. Pairing such a face with such a naive smile felt extremely incongruous.
But since he liked to act, she would let him act. It was just that his “honesty” was poorly performed—his acting skills clearly needed improvement.
Xiao Wange took Zhaozhao by the hand and headed toward the kitchen. Qiu Haiyang looked at Zhaozhao and said with a smile, “Zhaozhao, how about playing with Uncle for a while? Uncle wants to chat with you.”
He deliberately softened his tone, trying to look like a kindly elder.
Zhaozhao pressed his lips together, glanced at Qiu Haiyang, and said seriously, “But I need to help Mama tend the fire. Mama will be very tired if she works alone. I want to help her. Uncle, you sit here and play by yourself for a while. Mama and I are going to cook noodles for you.”
He didn’t like this uncle—not at all. He felt this uncle was a bad person.
Even though the uncle looked nice, he still felt like a bad guy.
He felt that this uncle coming to their house today was to do something bad.
He didn’t know exactly what kind of bad thing it was.
He just hoped this uncle wouldn’t do anything bad. Because if he did, Mama would punish him.
Qiu Haiyang’s brows twitched almost imperceptibly.
He had to get this child, Zhan Jinzhao, out of the way. Only by sending him away could his plan succeed.
Standing up from his chair, Qiu Haiyang walked toward Zhaozhao and said, “Zhaozhao, I know how to tell stories. How about I tell you one?” He paused, then added, “I can tell any story you want. Whatever you want to hear.”
A trace of cold laughter flashed across Xiao Wange’s lips.
Zhaozhao wanted to help her, but Qiu Haiyang was determined to keep him behind. This guest truly showed no consideration for her at all. As expected of someone who wanted to do something bad—only his own interests mattered, with no regard for her, the host.
Xiao Wange glanced at Qiu Haiyang, then turned to Zhaozhao and said, “Since this uncle wants to tell you a story, then listen to him. Maybe his stories are really good and interesting.”
“But Mama…”
“Be good and listen. Mama can cook the noodles by herself. It’s just noodles—an easy task for Mama.”
As she spoke, she glanced at Qiu Haiyang.
When Qiu Haiyang met her gaze, his heart stuttered for a moment.
He had only been thinking about keeping Zhaozhao here so he could send him away later.
He hadn’t considered that Zhaozhao was thoughtfully trying to help Xiao Wange, while he was insisting on keeping Zhaozhao behind—an act that showed no consideration for Xiao Wange at all.
A normal guest would probably offer to help Xiao Wange personally, yet he was doing the exact opposite!
Secretly clenching his hand, he felt a bit annoyed. Would his eagerness make Xiao Wange sense that something was wrong?
Xiao Wange gently patted Zhaozhao on the shoulder and sent him a sentence using secret sound transmission.
After hearing it, Zhaozhao obediently nodded. “Alright then. Mama, you go cook the noodles. I’ll listen to Uncle tell stories.”
