Xiao Wange casually followed up, “Who is it?”
A villager beside her leaned in, his face full of indignation. “It’s Bai Caixuan! Bai Caixuan is back!”
Xiao Wange: “……”
She was a little shocked, looking at that villager in surprise.
Bai Caixuan was actually back? Hadn’t she been sentenced? Could it be that…
“I heard it was one of her male classmates from high school who got her out. That classmate’s family has some influence, so they pulled her out of prison easily. When we saw Bai Caixuan come back, we were shocked to death. You tell me—she committed such a serious crime, how could she just be gotten out like that? This… this is really outrageous.”
Another villager also looked furious, speaking indignantly.
Xiao Wange pressed her lips together. Her eyes flickered slightly, and a chill surged in the depths of her gaze.
She had known Bai Caixuan would come out sooner or later. After all, the crime Bai Caixuan committed wasn’t enough for the law to sentence her to life imprisonment.
What she hadn’t expected was that Bai Caixuan would be so capable—actually having a high school classmate pull strings to get her out.
She really was someone with “abilities.”
“Wange, after Bai Caixuan went to prison and came back, I bet she hates you even more now, and she definitely wants to go after you again. From now on, you must be very careful—absolutely keep your guard up against her,” Zhao Lijuan said worriedly.
She was afraid that Bai Caixuan would once again use underhanded schemes to harm Wange and Zhaozhao.
After all, someone like Bai Caixuan was truly insidious.
Xiao Wange tugged at the corner of her mouth. A smile suddenly appeared on her face as she looked at Zhao Lijuan and said, “Auntie, don’t worry. I’m not the Xiao Wange I used to be anymore. So it won’t be that easy for Bai Caixuan to deal with me. If she tries to come after me, she’ll only bring trouble upon herself.”
She actually wanted to see whether Bai Caixuan would continue to play dirty. If she did, Xiao Wange wouldn’t mind sending her back in again!
“That’s true. Wange, you can catch ghosts—you’ve got real abilities. So it won’t be easy for Bai Caixuan to deal with you,” Zhao Lijuan said.
Thinking of Xiao Wange’s capabilities, Zhao Lijuan felt a bit more at ease.
Still, no matter how capable Wange was, she couldn’t help worrying. No matter how skilled someone was, there were always moments of oversight. If Bai Caixuan took advantage of a moment when Wange wasn’t paying attention and used some underhanded scheme… the consequences would be unthinkable.
“I know you’re worried about me, Auntie. Thank you,” Xiao Wange said with a gentle smile, politely expressing her thanks.
After thanking Zhao Lijuan, she also thanked the other villagers.
After all, they had waited here just to warn her, afraid that she might suffer at Bai Caixuan’s hands.
After parting ways with Zhao Lijuan and the others, Xiao Wange carried Zhaozhao and headed toward her home.
When they reached the gate, Zhaozhao woke up.
Zhaozhao rubbed his eyes and was just about to speak to his mother when, at that moment, someone suddenly came out from the neighboring courtyard.
That person looked at Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao, smiling as she said, “It really has been a long time, Xiao Wange. Oh, and Zhaozhao too. Zhaozhao, it’s been a long time since we last met as well.”
Zhaozhao lifted his eyes to look at the person. Seeing the smile on her face, he slightly furrowed his little brows, and the small hand resting in his mother’s arms immediately clenched.
He puffed out his cheeks, glanced at Bai Caixuan, then looked up at his mother and said, “Mama…”
He wanted to tell his mother that the bad person was back, that the bad person had already finished serving her sentence so quickly. But before he could finish speaking, Bai Caixuan spoke again:
“Xiao Wange, you remember how you framed me, don’t you? Don’t think for a moment that I’ll just let this go. I will never settle this score! You schemed against me and sent me to prison, making me suffer so much there. I will return all of it to you—hundreds, thousands of times over!”
As Bai Caixuan said this, her entire face twisted. It was filled with hatred, a hatred like a surging tide that seemed ready to drown everything around it.
Xiao Wange gave a light scoff. She looked at Bai Caixuan with disdain and said calmly, “The fact that you managed to get out shows you have some ability. But Bai Caixuan, you went to prison because you brought it upon yourself. If you hadn’t schemed against others first, I wouldn’t have schemed against you. In the end, it was you who made the mistake first. If you were in the wrong to begin with, don’t blame others for being ruthless. Of course, if you really want to come after me, then feel free. I, Xiao Wange, certainly won’t be afraid of you.”
After saying that, she couldn’t be bothered to waste any more words on Bai Caixuan. She opened the courtyard gate and walked inside.
Bai Caixuan watched Xiao Wange’s retreating figure, clenching her fists tightly as the hatred on her face deepened even further.
Staring at Xiao Wange’s back, she shouted, “Xiao Wange, just you wait! Sooner or later, I’ll make you pay!”
Xiao Wange let out a cold snort.
She casually shut the courtyard gate, not bothering to respond to Bai Caixuan at all.
After a stint in prison, Bai Caixuan had actually become dumber. Just throwing out harsh threats like that—who did she think she was going to scare?
She, Xiao Wange, hadn’t grown up being frightened by threats. How could she possibly be afraid of this?
After closing the gate, she and Zhaozhao went into the living room.
Zhaozhao climbed down from Xiao Wange’s arms, looked up at her, and said, “Mama, I don’t like Sister Bai. Sister Bai is a bad person. I don’t like her.”
He had originally thought that Sister Bai had gone to prison and that he would never have to see her again.
But he hadn’t expected her to come back home. Would Sister Bai not have to go to prison anymore? But people who committed crimes were clearly supposed to go to prison, weren’t they?
Xiao Wange stroked his head, her expression gentle as she said slowly, “I don’t like her either. No one likes bad people like her.”
After a pause, she continued, “Don’t worry. She won’t be able to stay in the village for long. I think very soon, she’ll be going back to prison again.”
Zhaozhao’s eyes lit up.
He grabbed the sleeve of his mother’s clothes, his face full of hope. “Really, Mama? She’ll really go back to prison again?”
Xiao Wange nodded. “Really. Mama isn’t lying to you.”
A happy smile appeared on Zhaozhao’s face.
He shook his mother’s sleeve a couple of times, his eyes sparkling. “She’s a bad person. She’ll do bad things outside. So I hope she goes to prison, and only comes out after she’s become a good person.”
But right now, that Sister Bai clearly hadn’t changed for the better. Just now, she had even said she would make Mama pay. The Sister Bai from earlier had been so scary.
Xiao Wange took the meat out of the basket and carried it toward the kitchen. “Mm, but I think once she goes back in this time, she won’t have any chance of coming out again.”
Outside, Bai Caixuan stared at the tightly closed courtyard gate. Her face was dark and gloomy as she curled her lips into a sinister smile.
