“If it really turns out that the problem was with their dish, can we be released?”
The one asking was Wang Dahai’s distant relative. He had come to help, but now he was locked up at the police station. If a criminal record stuck to him, it would affect his future political review—just thinking about it made him feel wronged.
By now, they were all regretting it to the core.
A police officer slammed the table: “You were causing a public disturbance. Do you think you can just be let off?”
Now they regretted it even more!
Time at the police station felt frozen; every minute and second was torture.
Chen Gang and the others were relatively calm. Zhang Qiao had confidence in their products. Though a little anxious, she still had a sense of assurance. Only Zhang Ling, stepping in for the first time, looked pale as death and terrified beyond measure.
Zhang Qiao couldn’t help but comfort her: “Sister, it’s okay…”
“Mm.”
Zhang Ling nodded but couldn’t stop her legs from trembling.
With the current strict crackdowns, if the investigation went poorly, would she be sentenced? And if she went to prison, Xu Liang would certainly have a lot to say. More than that, he wouldn’t wait for her—he would definitely divorce her.
Thinking of this, a wave of hopelessness swept over her.
Just as she was about to collapse, someone knocked on the door. A man in uniform spoke briefly with the officer handling their case.
The officer’s expression turned serious and he left as soon as the door opened.
“This is bad, Qiao Qiao! Did you see the look the officer gave us? It was like a silent judgment.” Zhang Ling felt the gaze like a wordless verdict.
It was already 4 p.m.—could it be that the hospital results came early?
Zhang Qiao also sensed that something had changed. What had happened outside?
Wang Dahai’s father, squatting on the floor and holding his head, let out a snicker: “It must be the hospital results! Our son really got poisoned by the pickled cabbage! Zhang Qiao, you can’t get away! Just wait for jail!”
Hearing this, Zhang Ling was even more shocked, clutching Zhang Qiao’s wrist tightly, tears welling up in her eyes.
But Zhang Qiao shook her head firmly at her: “Sister, it won’t happen!”
Another half hour passed, and the office door opened again.
Two police officers entered, their expressions even colder and more serious than before. Even Chen Gang and the others couldn’t help but feel a twinge of worry.
Da Lin: “Chen Gang, has Brother Yue managed it or not?”
Chen Gang thought of that cold-faced, hard-hearted Jin Quan. “Probably… yeah. Brother Yue is efficient, you can’t really underestimate him!”
The police cleared their throats and suddenly spoke to Zhang Qiao: “Comrade Zhang Qiao, here’s the situation: Wang Dahai, who claimed to have been food poisoned, has voluntarily confessed. He said he was instructed by Li Dong to take a small amount of pesticide before the meal, pretending to have food poisoning symptoms. The matter has been clarified. You and your friends may leave.”
Zhang Qiao: He actually turned himself in!!!
How did he come to this decision???
Chen Gang and Da Lin exchanged a glance. See? Brother Yue really is efficient.
Zhang Ling, overjoyed, sank to the ground as her legs gave out.
The Wang family members huddled together on the floor, now in an uproar.
“Dad, this isn’t how it happened! This is framing! We’ve been totally screwed over by your family!”
“Comrades, we really didn’t know Dahai was pretending. There’s a saying—ignorance is no crime, right?”
Wang Dahai’s father: “Impossible! Dahai can’t be pretending! Where’s the doctor? I want to see the hospital report!”
There was another knock on the door. A police officer opened it, bringing in Wu Xia from the county hospital.
She stood at the doorway, glancing at Zhang Qiao first.
“The diagnostic results are out. Wang Dahai suffered pesticide poisoning; it has nothing to do with the pickled fish he ate.”
Wu Xia handed the report to the police: “I personally participated in Dahai’s emergency treatment today. I can confirm that his initial symptoms were very similar to food poisoning. But after lab tests, pesticide components—carbamate and organosulfur compounds—were detected in his stomach. These caused his headache and nausea, not the food he ate.”
The doctor’s conclusion was out.
The Wang family’s hopes were crushed. They were completely speechless. Because they had caused a public disturbance and participated in a fight, their detention was inevitable.
At 5 p.m., two police officers personally escorted Zhang Qiao and her friends out.
Zhang Ling’s legs were still weak as she walked last in line.
Distracted, she tripped over a stone—but a strong hand caught her arm in time.
“Thank you.”
She looked up in gratitude but froze at the dark, intimidating gaze.
It was a stranger.
A man slightly older than Lin Tianyue, comparable in height. He wasn’t as handsome as Lin Tianyue, but not ugly either—and far more intimidating.
That face, full of dangerous energy, was oppressive. Zhang Ling would definitely avoid him in daily life.
Simply put, he didn’t look like a good person.
Jin Quan released his grip, casting her a cold glance.
Chen Gang, hearing the voice, turned around. His eyes lit up: “Brother Quan, you came personally?!”
He approached eagerly to pat his shoulder, but upon meeting that cold, severe face, his hand immediately retracted.
Lin Tianyue was usually strict, but Jin Quan appeared even more unapproachable, his face like it had been carved by the Siberian winds.
Chen Gang didn’t know much about Jin Quan—only that he was a retired military man and had a close relationship with Lin Tianyue.
Though hard to approach, he was someone worth knowing.
“Chen Gang, do you know him?” Zhang Ling thought he was just a passerby.
Chen Gang: “Yes, this is Brother Yue’s friend. We owe him a lot today. Otherwise, Wang Dahai wouldn’t have turned himself in so easily! Thanks, Brother Quan.”
Jin Quan’s naturally cold expression didn’t change. “I’m here for your director.”
“Y-yes, yes.”
At key moments, Brother Yue really could pull everyone out safely.
Up ahead, Zhang Qiao stopped and looked in this direction.
She didn’t know Jin Quan and assumed he was Chen Gang’s friend.
Jin Quan glanced at her from afar: “Is this Director Lin’s wife?”
Chen Gang: “Ah… yes.”
“She is indeed pretty.”
Chen Gang: What should he say now?
“Go home. I’m leaving.”
Jin Quan was cold by nature and didn’t care for pleasantries. Besides, he wasn’t expecting anything.
Seeing him about to leave, Zhang Ling timidly opened her mouth: “Brother, aren’t you going to have a cup of water at our place…”
Since he helped Zhang Qiao, she felt it proper to be polite.
Unexpectedly, Jin Quan gave her a chilling glance, making her recoil.
Better not.
“Next time.”
Jin Quan said this, then his tall figure disappeared into the dusk.
Zhang Ling withdrew her gaze: “What does this man do? Is he really my sister’s husband’s friend?”
Chen Gang: “Yes, his name is Jin Quan. Brother Yue says he’s a formidable character. But I don’t know him well. Brother Yue knows a lot of people. Oh, and sister, don’t tell my sister-in-law about this—that’s Brother Yue’s wish.”
Zhang Ling thought: Don’t tell her? Does this Jin guy have some secret identity?
Never mind. Qiao Qiao’s pregnant—better to avoid trouble. She found him genuinely intimidating.
