Zhang Qiao bought new backpacks and stationery for the three little ones again. Their previous backpacks had been burned in the fire, so this time she bought even better ones—each backpack costing over ten yuan—which made Yingzi beside her wince and mutter in frustration.
“Qiao Qiao, only you and Brother Yue actually know how to make money. If it were just you spending like this, Brother Yue would go bankrupt for sure!”
Zhang Qiao didn’t agree with Yingzi.
Sure, she had spent quite a bit today. But what’s the point of earning money if not to improve your living conditions, to make life better for yourself and your family?
She wasn’t going to be like people in this era, splitting every penny into eight parts, stingy with everything, and living a miserable life every day.
Being willing to spend money gives you the motivation to work harder and earn more.
With some time to spare, Zhang Qiao and Yingzi wandered around casually. Yingzi had her eye on a set of clothes but couldn’t bring herself to buy them, struggling over the decision for a long while. In the end, she only bought Chen Gang a pair of trendy “frog-eye” sunglasses.
“He’s wanted these for so long. How’s it look, Qiao Qiao? Cool, right?” Yingzi put on the glasses and struck a flirtatious pose.
“Yeah, it suits you. Curl your hair, wear some bell-bottom pants, a floral shirt, and you’ll have that classic Hong Kong vibe.”
Yingzi laughed, took off the glasses, and clipped them to her chest. “Forget it. Curling hair and buying clothes cost money. Let’s wait until we’re rich before we do that.”
Though she said that, she couldn’t help glancing toward the cosmetics counter.
A couple was there, choosing lipstick. The girl tried some on, smiling seductively as she asked her boyfriend if it looked good.
Looking closely, her belly was slightly protruding—it seemed she was pregnant…
“Qiao Qiao, city women really are stylish. Look, even when pregnant, they can’t stop being vain.”
Zhang Qiao also noticed the woman, and for some reason, the couple looked familiar to her.
Suddenly, she saw another familiar figure hiding behind a pillar in the mall.
Su Yin?
Wasn’t she the one Zhang Qiao had met at the hospital last time—the woman who had tried to jump into the river for love?
What was she doing hiding there?
Looking again at the couple, Zhang Qiao suddenly understood.
Wasn’t that the man who had cheated on Su Yin? What was his name… Zhao Qiang? Not only had he cheated, he had broken up with her and was going to marry the pregnant third party!
Su Yin was hiding in the corner, wiping her tears while watching the scene with a heart-wrenching expression.
Zhang Qiao couldn’t stand it, so she walked over and tapped Su Yin on the shoulder from behind.
Su Yin turned around, her eyes blurred with tears, and froze for a moment when she saw Zhang Qiao.
“Already don’t recognize me?”
With a girl this pretty, how could Su Yin not recognize her?
She was just embarrassed to have been caught in such a pitiful state.
Quickly wiping her tears, she grabbed Zhang Qiao’s hand. “Zhang Qiao, it’s really you! You’re in Jiangcheng too? I’ve been looking for you for so long—today I finally ran into you!”
It turned out Su Yin had accidentally washed away the address Zhang Qiao had left for her. She had been trying to find her from vague memories but had gone to the wrong place.
Zhang Qiao was living in Xiangshui County, but Su Yin went to Yunshui County, so of course, she didn’t find her.
Su Yin regretted this for a long time, thinking she would never meet her benefactor again.
Who would’ve thought that fate was so magical—they actually met again in the beautiful city of Jiangcheng.
Zhang Qiao introduced Yingzi to Su Yin and glanced at her reddened eyes. “We came here to buy a few things. What about you…”
Afraid of being seen by Zhao Qiang and Lin Xiaowan, Su Yin quickly pulled Zhang Qiao and Yingzi aside. “It’s been a while, and your belly has grown so much. Let’s go somewhere to chat. Can I buy you coffee?”
Zhang Qiao didn’t refuse.
In the café, Yingzi, who had never been to a place like this before, felt a little awkward. Even her coffee order was chosen by Zhang Qiao.
While waiting for the coffee to arrive, Zhang Qiao looked at Su Yin’s face. “Su Yin, your acne has gotten a lot better.”
“Yes, Zhang Qiao, the ointment you recommended really worked wonders. I had tried so many home remedies before, but none worked. I used the two tubes you recommended, and my acne almost cleared up.”
Zhang Qiao nodded. “Yeah, your skin is still a little rough and dull, but no worries. I’ll give you a formula in a bit. With a little more care, your skin will become much whiter and smoother. By the way, have you lost weight?”
The last time Zhang Qiao saw Su Yin, her skin was dark, her face full of acne, and she weighed at least 120 jin. Now, her face looked smaller, her acne was gone, and her arms and legs were all thinner.
“I have. I used to be 123 jin, now I’m around 100 jin.”
Su Yin looked a little embarrassed. After the breakup and the river incident, she had been depressed and hadn’t eaten much. She had unknowingly lost twenty jin—maybe she could call it a “breakup perk.”
“Being slim is good-looking. Su Yin, you look much better than when I last saw you. Seems like you took my advice and focused on yourself, which is the most important thing. But what were you doing at the mall today? Don’t tell me—you’re still hung up on him, are you?”
Su Yin blushed. “No… I just happened to run into him. Zhang Qiao, just think of me as unlucky. Zhao Qiang and Lin Xiaowan are getting married. He sent invitations to the whole factory and even sent one to me! How shameless is that? Doesn’t he feel embarrassed?”
Zhang Qiao said, “People who are despicable are invincible. You feel embarrassed around a jerk? If he were embarrassed, he should quit!”
Su Yin continued, “I went out today just to relax and pick out some clothes. Who knew that as soon as I arrived, I saw him buying lipstick for Lin Xiaowan. I was going to leave, but then I saw him looking at her with such a doting expression, and I couldn’t help feeling sad. He never looked at me like that before. I treated him so well. He came from the countryside, started with nothing. I lent him my house, helped him find a job, and even helped him get regular employment. How could he be so heartless!”
As she spoke, Su Yin grew sadder and sadder.
At first, it might have been okay if she had taken the initiative. But Zhao Qiang pursued her with sweet talk, and she, inexperienced in love, was swept off her feet, thinking she had found true love.
Now she finally realized, Zhao Qiang never intended to make it last. He never introduced her to his friends or family, and when she tried to introduce him to hers, he kept putting it off. She had just been a stepping stone all along.
“How dare he send me an invitation? Doesn’t he fear I’ll make a scene at his wedding? I wish the whole world knew Zhao Qiang is a jerk! I hope his marriage fails!”
The more she spoke, the more agitated she became, desperate to vent all her frustration.
Just then, their coffees arrived one by one. Zhang Qiao gestured to Su Yin to take a sip first.
She tried a sip herself.
She had ordered the simplest latte. Ever since she had transmigrated, this was the first time Zhang Qiao had tasted coffee.
It was pretty good.
But Yingzi, who had never had coffee before, took a sip and found it so bitter she nearly spat it out.
“What is this stuff? Tastes like ash water! Ugh, it’s awful!”
