The slight stubble brushed against her ear, sending a tingling shiver through her. Zhang Qiao instinctively leaned away, her heart beating faster.
“Mmm, you did pretty well.”
Zhang Qiao didn’t want to say anything insincere. If today Lin Tianyue had guessed her intentions and acted accordingly, then indeed, he had performed flawlessly.
Being praised by his wife for the first time made Lin Tianyue’s blood surge with excitement.
“So… what’s my reward, wife?”
His voice had grown huskier, and even the way he looked at her carried a hint of desire.
Zhang Qiao felt her face flush, her heart warm—a little stirred by the rough man’s flirtation.
But retreating now wasn’t her style. Besides, men needed encouragement. The more praise and sweet words she gave, the more willingly he would be at her disposal.
So Zhang Qiao pouted and planted a quick, deliberate kiss on his cheek.
It was crisp and audible.
The kiss made the man’s scalp tingle.
Looking at Zhang Qiao again, she smiled, her eyes curved like a mischievous little fox: “The reward is a kiss. Alright, Lin Tianyue, now can you take the quilt next door?”
Lin Tianyue, still on a high from the kiss, was handed the quilt and couldn’t hide his delight.
Of course, he wasn’t fully satisfied—but his wife had kissed him, and she had done so proactively. One kiss was enough to lift him to cloud nine.
So when he carried the quilt out, there wasn’t even a hint of disappointment; he was giddily excited, almost like a fool.
Ah, so this is how it feels to be kissed by your wife first.
Had he married a fake wife before? She had been by his side for months, and he hadn’t reacted at all!
That night, someone in the next room stayed up the entire night in excitement, even coming up with multiple names for their child.
Meanwhile, Zhang Qiao chatted with Zhang Ling late into the night. She finally learned that Zhang Ling and Xu Liang had long-standing tensions, mainly because Zhang Ling hadn’t gotten pregnant after marriage.
Feeling guilty, Zhang Ling kept apologizing for her own shortcomings, making Zhang Qiao’s head ache.
But she understood—it was the limitations of the times. Women, with less education and exposure, often treated themselves as secondary to men. If they couldn’t have children, it was considered a grave fault.
In short, historically and even now, women always suffered the most.
The next morning, when the two sisters got up, Lin Tianyue had already prepared breakfast.
Zhang Qiao was used to it, but Zhang Ling was mortified.
While serving porridge, she whispered to Zhang Qiao: “Seriously, if I had known, we wouldn’t have chatted so late last night. How can we visit someone and wake up later than the hosts? Our brother-in-law will laugh at us.”
Zhang Qiao, however, found Lin Tianyue acting unusually.
This guy had a grin stretched almost to his ears since early morning. Judging by his expression, he probably wasn’t paying attention to anyone else.
But what was he so happy about?
After breakfast, Zhang Ling washed the dishes again.
Zhang Qiao and Lin Tianyue went downstairs together. Since she was quite far along in her pregnancy, Lin Tianyue followed her everywhere like a protective guardian.
Seeing him trailing behind, lips curved in a faint smile, she couldn’t help but ask: “Lin Tianyue, are you celebrating something?”
Lin Tianyue answered seriously: “No, not really.”
Zhang Qiao tilted her head, observing him closely.
He wasn’t laughing, but his overall demeanor was very different from usual.
Specifically, he seemed a little excited. Though he had dark circles under his eyes, his eyes were bright.
Zhang Qiao assumed he was just in a good mood and didn’t probe further.
Then Lin Tianyue slung one arm around her shoulder and eagerly said: “By the way, wife, I decided on our son’s name last night. How about Lin Yuanhang? ‘Hang’ means voyage—it symbolizes a good young man destined to explore the world. Or Lin Mingxuan, or Lin Ziru. Which one do you like?”
Zhang Qiao: “…”
Could he really be this excited just about naming the child?
Good grief, she shouldn’t have had any hope for this stubborn old-fashioned man.
Lin Tianyue hadn’t noticed her displeasure: “Wife, give me your opinion. I thought about it all night.”
Zhang Qiao just gave him a big eye-roll: “Lin Mingxuan, Lin Ziru… Lin Tianyue, are you picking a name from a romance drama?”
“Huh? You think none are good?”
Zhang Qiao withdrew his hand, which had been trying to take advantage, and refused to engage further.
Just then, someone knocked at the door downstairs. She quickened her pace, and Lin Tianyue chased after her: “Qiao Qiao, slow down!”
Why did it feel like his wife was angry again? Wasn’t she fine just a moment ago?
The door opened, and Zhang Qiao’s eyes lit up.
Outside stood Zhou Junlin and Zhou Xiaoxiao.
Zhou Junlin wore a beige long trench coat, tall and elegant, with gold-rimmed glasses that gave him a refined, scholarly appearance. Zhou Xiaoxiao wore a matching coat over a girlish dress, equally sweet and charming.
Together, they were a picturesque sight. Zhou Junlin held a framed painting, and Zhou Xiaoxiao carried a bouquet of bright sunflowers.
As soon as the door opened, Xiaoxiao raised the flowers to give to Zhang Qiao: “Auntie Qiao Qiao, these are for you. Congratulations to you and Uncle Lin on the new home!”
Zhou Junlin adjusted his glasses and handed over the painting: “Comrade Xiao Zhang, you moved to a new home and didn’t tell me. Just a small painting, a token of my respect.”
Their courtesy was truly impeccable.
Zhang Qiao accepted the painting and bent down to kiss Xiaoxiao’s cheek: “So obedient, Xiaoxiao. Director Zhou, you’ve gone to so much trouble.”
Hearing the commotion, Lin Tianyue arrived in his sailor shirt and green military pants. Facing the gentlemanly Zhou Junlin outside, he felt a wave of embarrassment.
Damn, why him? He should have changed clothes!
Comparisons always sting.
Though Lin Tianyue was also handsome and ruggedly free-spirited, he was unaware of his own charm. But Zhou Junlin’s poise and refined manner made him feel overshadowed.
Still, he wouldn’t show it.
“Director Zhou, you’re too kind. Just coming personally is already honorable enough, not to mention bringing gifts.”
Zhou Junlin: “It’s only right! But you, Xiao Lin, such a big thing at home, and you didn’t tell me? Are we friends or not?”
The word “friend” was said warmly. Lin Tianyue was grateful in his heart.
He politely ushered them in, while Zhang Qiao held Xiaoxiao’s hand.
Xiaoxiao immediately looked around the courtyard.
Zhang Qiao asked: “Are you looking for Lin Xun and the others? They’re playing in the backyard. Want to go see?”
“Sure!”
Xiaoxiao, still a child, was more eager to play with the three kids than focus on learning.
She bounced to the backyard, calling from afar: “Brother Lin Xun!”
Lin Xun, crouched on the ground checking the fermenting pickled cabbage, heard the familiar voice and his heart skipped a beat.
