The teacher with glasses pushed them up and spoke with professional authority: “It can’t be considered a child anymore. It’s fully grown, matured. Judging by its appearance, it’s at least a couple of years older than you think.”
Shi Qian, forced to have his age exposed in public: ……
Damn, that’s what a professional teacher is like.
Chen Niu wasn’t swayed. He insisted on his earlier statement: “That has nothing to do with it. Qianhua behaves like a child psychologically.”
Chen Niu had always felt a twinge of regret—Qianhua was clearly intelligent, but he could only hide his cleverness.
Now, at South Agricultural University, though entering a completely unfamiliar place, it was the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. So Chen Niu decided to lie a little to make Qianhua more comfortable and at ease.
The reason he gave offhandedly was actually something he had thought through carefully.
The glasses-wearing teacher sighed upon hearing it.
The teacher at the registration desk interjected: “Teacher Wang, why don’t you wait until the new students finish their registration issues? Can we discuss this afterward? There are people waiting behind.”
Then turning to Chen Niu: “Chen Niu, I’ve heard your request and reasons just now. Requesting a single room shouldn’t be a problem.
“But bringing your cow to live with you might not be so convenient. For example, your cow’s eating, drinking, and bathroom needs, whether it might disturb other students, and the fact that many plants on campus are off-limits and require constant supervision—you still have classes, after all. Managing all of that might be beyond your energy.”
Everyone nearby—whether registering or handling registrations—focused their attention on Chen Niu and the Shi Qian beside him, intrigued by this unusual situation.
After listening, Shi Qian wagged his tail: “Moo moo.”
None of that’s a problem.
Chen Niu patted his head and confidently said, “Don’t worry about these issues, teacher. Qianhua knows how to use the bathroom and won’t touch the outside plants. Back in our village, he used to roam freely but never ate the crops or other people’s gardens. He’s very smart.
“At night, he doesn’t make noise either. Only when there’s a moon does he like to bask in it.”
Shi Qian: That’s me diligently training.
“You’re not lying, right, little comrade?” asked the thick-glasses expert, his tone urgent.
Chen Niu: “Every word I just said is true.”
As for what he said before that—he didn’t make any promises.
“If you’re not lying, then you don’t need to worry about his eating and drinking. I can handle that.”
The glasses expert offered a condition. He raised many animals and had a steady supply of feed and grass every year. Feeding one more cow was no trouble.
Chen Niu shook his head: “Qianhua isn’t for sale.”
The teacher pushed up his glasses again: “I’m not asking it to be sold! As long as you aren’t lying, and it’s that smart, I’ll take care of its food and water. I’ll follow it and study just how smart a cow can be.”
Chen Niu, like a parent showing off their child during the Spring Festival, spoke without thinking: “Qianhua is clever—really impressive. His arithmetic is amazing.”
Chen Niu exchanged a few words with the other party and had already settled the issue of future provisions.
Left alone, Shi Qian the cow were completely baffled.
This is… more “homework” again?!
No way.
Chen Niu’s verbal agreement alone wasn’t enough—he still had to sign a guarantee. If Shi Qian violated the terms a certain number of times, he wouldn’t be allowed to keep his single room at the school and would have to be sent out.
With his neat, formal handwriting, Chen Niu signed his name and successfully received the key to the single room.
Behind him, Teacher Wang with glasses lingered, reluctant to leave.
Shi Qian quickly sidestepped Chen Niu, keeping a little distance.
Teacher Wang looked a bit sad and spoke over Chen Niu: “You’re called Qian Niuhua, right? I was wrong—I shouldn’t have brought up such an awkward topic the moment we met.”
He was so moved he leaned against Chen Niu.
Even Chen Niu began to feel uneasy: “Teacher, please don’t do this.”
Only then did Teacher Wang realize he’d been focused on the animal and had forgotten about the human.
Embarrassed, he pushed up his glasses: “Hello, student. My name is Wang—Wang Si’an. The character for Wang is three horizontals and one vertical. Si’an means thinking of safety. You can just call me Teacher Wang; maybe you’ll even have my class someday.”
“Hello, Teacher Wang. I’m Chen Niu—Ear Dong Chen, Niu as in cow.” Chen Niu said this while pointing at Shi Qian.
Shi Qian: …
No problem there.
Teacher Wang then enthusiastically led the way, and Shi Qian suspected he already knew where he lived.
However, once Teacher Wang started asking math questions, Shi Qian relaxed and happily answered a few simple elementary problems.
Knowledge is power.
A cow that can do arithmetic is more impressive than a handsome cow.
At first, Teacher Wang was happy, but later he noticed Qian Niuhua wasn’t paying attention to him. Curious, he asked: “Chen Niu, why isn’t Qian Niuhua responding to me?”
Chen Niu replied with a phrase Qian Niuhua had written: “That’s a different price.”
Wang Si’an: ?
“Different… we need to pay?”
“No, it’s not about money. Qian Niuhua is just too lazy to calculate or answer—like a child, you have to coax him.”
“Oh, I see. He’s still a child, right?”
Chen Niu nodded in agreement: “Yes.”
Shi Qian turned his face away, hoping they would quickly skip this embarrassing topic.
But listening further, he realized they were getting more and more excited.
Shi Qian: I can’t listen to this anymore.
He shook his head, followed the school’s simple signs, and dragged his provisions toward the single room.
The first to panic was Teacher Wang: “Ah! Qian Niuhua, where are you going?”
Chen Niu: “It’s fine.”
Wang Si’an: “You need to go after him! You don’t know your way around, how can you say it’s fine?”
Unable to resist, Wang Si’an adjusted his glasses and ran after him.
Chen Niu, left behind, suddenly realized he was alone.
Chen Niu: “He’s just gone ahead, didn’t take a wrong turn.”
He pondered for a moment whether he had been too talkative or had somehow upset the little lord.
Wang Si’an caught up, gasping for breath.
Seeing his weak state, Shi Qian slowed down to wait for him.
Once Wang Si’an managed to catch up, he asked quickly: “Why are you running so fast? Isn’t this cart heavy?”
Shi Qian’s mind raced—oh no.
He’d been exposed.
At this moment, Teacher Wang’s mind was clearly too preoccupied with catching his breath to notice.
Shi Qian looked at him with innocent eyes, trying to bluff: “Moo.”
Stop asking—I’d have to worry about you wanting to eat me again.
Wang Si’an, curious, called back to Chen Niu, who was following behind: “Chen Niu, come translate for me!”
Chen Niu: “Coming.”
But having reflected earlier, Chen Niu didn’t talk much, and instead took the initiative to ask about the school.
Teacher Wang couldn’t only talk about what he wanted to know; he answered all of Chen Niu’s questions, fulfilling his role as a teacher.
The single rooms at South Agricultural University were for teachers and students. Chen Niu had applied for one of the few single rooms reserved for students with special needs—and luckily, he came early.
Teacher Wang led him to the room, where two students helped Chen Niu move his things, all very enthusiastic.
Once the work was mostly done, they left Chen Niu alone to organize his space.
After they left, Chen Niu pulled out the manuscript he had prepared for so long.
It wasn’t needed—the whole process had been far simpler than he imagined.
Part of it was thanks to his good performance, but also due to the school itself being accommodating.
He crumpled the paper into a ball and stuffed it back into his pocket.
Chen Niu continued cleaning and tidying up.
Shi Qian, seeing the dust swirling in the sunlight, decided to go socialize and familiarize himself with the new environment.
By the time Chen Niu went outside to look for the cow, Shi Qian was already helping the teachers carry mimeographed books.
In return, Shi Qian picked out several books for Chen Niu.
Chen Niu received a lot of praise, all about how capable his little cow was—surprisingly mature, extraordinary, and so on.
Chen Niu responded with a reserved smile and led Shi Qian back to their freshly cleaned new place.
The first day of school began, and students from various places gathered in the simple classroom. Faces ranged from youthful to weathered.
Shi Qian even saw a mother attending class with her child.
Of course, the most absurd sight was still Chen Niu—he brought his cow to class.
Seeing the pair of Chen Niu and Shi Qian, even the mother with her child relaxed.
Thinking: This school can work.
