Before this, Old Master Shen had already heard that Jiang Huashan had pushed Fu Sui’er down the stairs. Although he doted on Jiang Huashan, he would never tolerate something like this.
The old man originally planned to keep a cold face and give her a warning right away. Unexpectedly, as soon as he turned around, he saw Jiang Huashan rushing toward him in grievance. That kind of dependent, “falling into his arms” feeling was enough to melt even an iron wall eight feet thick.
“Why are you crying so well? Who bullied you?” Old Master Shen immediately abandoned his principles and bent down to comfort her softly.
Shen Zhi: “……”
Weren’t you just saying you couldn’t keep spoiling Miss Jiang anymore and needed to set some rules?
Jiang Huashan couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She stared at him intently. “Grandpa, is it really you? Am I dreaming?”
Old Master Shen found her reaction amusing. “We just saw each other this morning. Why are you acting like it’s been years?”
Her eyes turned sour, and she forced herself not to cry.
Not just a little—exactly three years.
“Ahem…” Shen Zhi couldn’t stand it anymore and coughed lightly to remind the old man not to forget the real matter.
The old man instantly changed his expression. “Do you know why Grandpa called you here?”
Jiang Huashan was still caught in the joy and shock of this reunion and didn’t respond immediately.
Old Master Shen mistook her silence for evasiveness and felt a faint disappointment. “Xiao Zhang and the others said you pushed Sui’er down the stairs. Tell Grandpa, is that true?”
Since taking Jiang Huashan in, Old Master Shen had always spoiled her. He never even spoke harshly to her, let alone looked at her like this.
Jiang Huashan froze slightly, finally remembering what this moment was about.
In the previous “script,” the same thing had happened. Jiang Wanyi had cried to her about Fu Sui’er bullying her. Angered, she went to confront Fu Sui’er. They argued in the corridor, and somehow Fu Sui’er fell down the stairs.
Back then, she had been afraid of punishment and followed Fang Mei’s suggestion to lie, saying Fu Sui’er fell by herself. And in the end, Old Master Shen let it go without saying much.
Seeing Jiang Huashan lower her head, Old Master Shen assumed she was avoiding responsibility again and shook his head slightly in disappointment.
“Alright, Grandpa understands…”
“Grandpa…” Jiang Huashan suddenly looked up and interrupted him.
Her eyes were exactly like her grandmother’s—almond-shaped, clear and dark, impossible to ignore.
For a moment, Old Master Shen seemed to see someone from the past.
Jiang Huashan bowed deeply. “I’m sorry. I disappointed you. Jiang Wanyi said Sui’er was always bullying her, so I went to argue with Sui’er in the corridor. Sui’er said Jiang Wanyi was stirring trouble and raised her hand to hit her. I tried to stop her, but I accidentally pushed her down the stairs.”
Old Master Shen never expected her to admit it so suddenly. After a brief silence, he asked sternly, “So you did it to protect Wanyi? But Huashan, have you thought about it? Sui’er is also your sister. What did Grandpa teach you? Shen family members should only aim their guns at outsiders, not their own family. Have you forgotten?”
Jiang Huashan shook her head. “I haven’t forgotten.”
When she first regained awareness, her mind was in chaos, but the only thing she remembered clearly was her grandfather’s teachings.
She took a deep breath, her gaze sincere. “Grandpa, I’m sorry. I handled this wrong. I promise it won’t happen again.”
Old Master Shen felt somewhat comforted, but still kept a stern face. “The one who was hurt wasn’t me. The person you should apologize to isn’t me either.”
“You’re right, Grandpa. I’ll go apologize to Sui’er.”
“Have you thought it through? Sui’er has a difficult temperament. If you want her forgiveness, you’ll have to suffer for it. Let me be clear first—this time you’re in the wrong. If anything happens, I won’t help you.”
Fu Sui’er’s mother was Shen Jia, the Shen family’s second daughter and the old master’s youngest child.
The Shen family and the Fu family were tied by marriage. Shen Jia married the youngest son of the Fu family, Fu Jiaming, and gave birth to Fu Sui’er a year later. Fu Sui’er and Jiang Huashan were about the same age, both pampered young ladies of powerful families. They were spoiled and domineering by nature. Old Master Shen knew very well that after suffering a loss at Jiang Huashan’s hands this time, Fu Sui’er would not let it go easily.
Jiang Huashan nodded. “Grandpa, I’ve thought it through!”
To her, no matter how bad Fu Sui’er’s temper was, she was still just a child. What real suffering could a child cause? The humiliation and torment she endured over the three years after the old master’s death were what truly broke a person.
Old Master Shen glanced at Shen Zhi.
Shen Zhi immediately understood and stepped forward at the right moment. “Old Master, should I escort Miss Jiang to the Winter Garden?”
In the Shen residence, Shen Zhi represented Old Master Shen. With him present, even Fu Sui’er wouldn’t dare act too recklessly.
Old Master Shen ultimately couldn’t bear to let Jiang Huashan suffer.
Jiang Huashan shook her head. “No need. I can handle it myself.”
