At the sight of Shen Che hanging up the phone immediately, Shen Jiao glanced at him. “Brother, why are you here?”
“Something this big happened—how could I not come? Where’s Jiang Huashan?”
“She’s in Nanwan.”
Shen Che’s expression turned serious. “What’s going on with that video? How did she end up with a gun? And how is this connected to the Su family?”
“Hey, lower your voice. You’re giving me a headache.”
“…” Shen Che nearly choked in frustration. “Do you even realize how serious this is? The Fu family is using this to turn the tables on the Shen family. If things go wrong, Huashan could be charged and end up in prison.”
Shen Jiao glanced at him. “I know. That’s why I’ve already gathered all the top defense lawyers in all of Whaling Harbor.”
“You raised the child like this? A pampered mother ruins the child!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Shen Qian and Shen Yuan walked in together.
Shen Jiao raised an eyebrow. “What a rare visit. Big brother, second brother, what brings you here? Aunt Feng, please serve tea to the gentlemen.”
Shen Qian’s face was dark. “What exactly is going on?”
As soon as the afternoon press conference ended, his office phones were ringing nonstop—either subordinates asking which side to take, or state media requesting interviews.
A sudden explosion had erupted at home, yet he hadn’t even been informed. How was that acceptable?
Shen Jiao shrugged. “How would I know? Didn’t everyone watch the livestream at the same time?”
Shen Yuan said coldly, “The General Police Bureau has already confirmed the video was legitimately recorded. Now there’s witness testimony and physical evidence. The prosecution has filed charges for illegal firearm possession, endangering public safety, and suspected attempted murder. The court has already accepted the case, and the Whaling Bay police may already be in action. And you still have the leisure to play dumb with us?”
“Play dumb?” Shen Jiao’s expression turned more serious. She looked at Shen Qian. “Speaking of which, isn’t Nanwan your territory? You should tell your people—if they’re going to arrest her, do it properly. Don’t scare the child.”
Shen Qian replied irritably, “I don’t need you to tell me that.”
Before coming here, he had already issued strict orders to his subordinates in Nanwan: the personnel escorting Jiang Huashan back to Whaling Harbor must be from the Nanwan police command.
Internal conflicts within the Shen family could stay behind closed doors, but to the outside world, Jiang Huashan represented the Shen family’s face. If the Fu family was allowed to humiliate her, it would be the Shen family losing face. So whether publicly or privately, Shen Qian would not stand by and do nothing.
The atmosphere grew tense. Shen Che changed the subject helplessly. “Any news from the old master? What did he say?”
Shen Qian and Shen Yuan’s expressions darkened. Especially Shen Yuan—Shen Qingyu, that unfilial brat—he had called three times without reaching the old master. When he tried a fourth time, he was directly blacklisted.
Shen Jiao said flatly, “If I could reach him, do you think I’d have to spend two billion myself?”
Unable to get any answers, the three of them left the Chrysanthemum Garden in frustration.
After they left, Aunt Feng closed the door to the main courtyard. Shen Jiao stood up and looked toward the screen. “They’re gone. Come out.”
A moment later, a graceful figure stepped out from behind the screen. Shen Mianzhi smiled slightly. “Aunt.”
Shen Jiao pressed a hand to her forehead and took a deep breath. “You people… have you all lost your minds?”
Shen Mianzhi walked over to support her. “Huashan just didn’t want you to worry, so she asked me to come report to you. Don’t worry, Aunt. This matter has already been approved by Grandpa. We didn’t act recklessly.”
Shen Jiao snapped, “The old man is insane too—spoiling her until she’s lawless.”
Shen Mianzhi smiled gently and tried to reassure her. “If she didn’t have the protection of her elders, Huashan wouldn’t dare to act so boldly. Especially you, Aunt. Huashan even said that even if she ends up in prison, you’d find a way to buy the prison for her. She won’t suffer any loss.”
“Stop trying to sweet-talk me.” Shen Jiao shot her a sidelong glance. “Was that huge press conference in the afternoon your doing?”
The Su family must have had arrangements at the scene. Without assistance from the dark network, the final reversal wouldn’t have gone so smoothly.
These moves weren’t visible on camera, but they couldn’t escape Shen Jiao’s eyes.
Shen Mianzhi’s gaze flickered. “Aunt… don’t tell my father.”
“You think your father doesn’t already know?” Shen Jiao tapped her forehead. “If he really didn’t, the ones storming Chrysanthemum Garden just now wouldn’t have been only three people. You call me a bad mother for spoiling children—I think your father is no better than me.”
Shen Mianzhi couldn’t help but laugh.
Shen Jiao still looked worried. “Mianzhi, can you at least give me a hint? Things have escalated this far—what exactly is Huashan trying to do? Is it really just for that Su family girl?”
Shen Mianzhi recalled Jiang Huashan’s instructions. Her usually calm expression turned solemn and sharp.
“Aunt, I can’t tell you why yet. I can only say this—we’re saving someone. Not just Su Miao, but many more people.”
The time difference between S Country and A Country was only two hours.
From 3 p.m., after Su Miao’s clarification press conference ended, Shen Zhuang stayed in his room making phone calls for a full five hours.
Except for the call with Su Jingliu, which took a bit of time, the rest of the calls were basically kept under one minute.
Shen Qingyu was lying on a lounge chair outside the courtyard, his phone continuously replaying the video of Jiang Huashan shooting and brutally killing criminals. Every time the footage paused at her slight head tilt and smile, his heartbeat would uncontrollably accelerate. Even after watching it for five hours, not once did he get used to it.
Now, it wasn’t just the old man—he also wanted to go home.
Just as he was thinking this, an incoming call suddenly popped up.
Shen Lanxi.
Shen Qingyu glanced at it and slowly sat up. “Oh, rare. Why is this idiot calling me?”
“Hello?”
Shen Lanxi said, “Where’s Grandpa?”
Shen Qingyu looked toward the house and replied lazily, “The old man’s busy right now. No time for you.”
Shen Lanxi: “……”
Shen Qingyu continued, “Shen Lanxi, can you handle things or not? If you can’t, just let that other idiot deal with it. He’s scheming, sure, but at least he’s less troublesome than you. Don’t call Grandpa every time something happens—are you still weaned or what? Do you really need to ask about something like this? If anything happens to Xiao Hua’er—”
Beep—
Shen Lanxi hung up.
Shen Qingyu clicked his tongue. After thinking for a moment, he dialed Old Madam Gu’s number.
“Grandma, I’m fine. Grandpa? Grandpa is still inside on calls. I’m okay—I just wanted to ask how my uncle has been recently. He said before that he was short on funds, so I transferred him some of mine since I had spare cash, but it’s been quite a while now…”
“Grandma! Please make sure you talk to my uncle properly!”
Gu Cifeng is the head of the Judicial Supervision Council. A beating at this time should be enough for him to understand the Shen family’s message.
South Bay.
Nightfall and the coastline merged into one line, ship lights scattering like human starlight across the drifting sea surface.
After hanging up, Shen Lanxi watched Shen Guiling’s departing back.
When Shen Guiling returned home, the living room was dark and empty.
He turned toward the bedroom. In the middle of the hallway, light spilled out from under a door.
Shen Guiling paused, standing in the darkness for a moment before slowly walking toward the bedroom.
He raised his hand to knock, but suddenly thought of something and pulled it back midway.
His eyes lifted slightly. In the darkness, his gaze was like light falling onto a sea dotted with stars.
After a brief moment of thought, he turned and went into his own bedroom instead.
On the other side of the door, Jiang Huashan was leaning against it. Only after hearing the sound of a lock from the next room did she slowly exhale.
These past two days, Shen Lanxi and Shen Guiling had been acting strange—always going out together early and coming back late. Thanks to them being too busy to bother with her, she had managed to pull off such a big move.
Shen Lanxi was hard to say, but Shen Guiling knew quite a lot about her. He must have already guessed that the video leak was related to her.
Yet now that he asked nothing, he was likely choosing to pretend he knew nothing.
Jiang Huashan turned over and jumped into bed, closing her eyes peacefully.
Sleep well. Tomorrow, back to battle.
