Whale Harbor, Su Residence.
Su Miao’s mother hugged her, crying uncontrollably. “Miao Miao, good child… you’re finally back.”
Su Miao’s father looked relieved, holding his wife’s shoulder. “What did I say? The child was just out playing for a couple of days. Once she’s had enough, she’ll come back. And you? You just wouldn’t believe me. Hurry and wipe your tears—you’re scaring the child.”
Crying in front of the child felt inappropriate, and Su Miao’s mother also felt a little embarrassed. She turned away, wiped her tears, and then pulled Su Miao close, examining her from head to toe.
“Miao Miao, next time no matter where you go, you must tell the family. Do you know how worried we all were?”
“I know,” Su Miao replied. Then she turned to Su Jingliu. “Grandfather, I’m sorry. I’m back.”
Su Jingliu waved his hand. “It’s good that you’re back. We’re family—what’s there to be sorry about?”
Su Yun stood outside the crowd, quietly watching them exchange greetings.
Su Jingliu noticed Su Yun’s unusual silence and smoothly eased the atmosphere with a smile. “Alright, everyone sit down. Today, at last, our family can have a proper meal together.”
The smile on Su Miao’s face faded slightly, but she nodded and took her seat.
From the moment she stepped into the Su family home, she hadn’t once looked at Su Yun. Su Yun understood her attitude as well, and remained silent from beginning to end.
Su Shen saw everything clearly and took the initiative to serve Su Miao a piece of the most tender fish belly. “Miao Miao, eat more.”
Su Miao lowered her voice in thanks.
Su Shen then turned to Su Yun. “A-Yun, I’ve already arranged things at school. Starting next week, you’ll transfer to Class One of Yingcai.”
Su Yun nodded. “Thank you, Dad.”
That simple expression of gratitude made Su Shen’s eyes slightly red. If he had not failed to protect his daughter, all of this should have belonged to Su Yun without effort.
Su Miao chewed on the fish in her bowl, suddenly missing the hotpot in Nanwan.
After the meal, Su Jingliu asked Su Miao to stay in the tea room for a private talk.
The grandfather and granddaughter sat facing each other. Su Jingliu placed a few oranges on a metal rack and began roasting them. Soon, the room was filled with a warm citrus fragrance.
When they were ready, he used tweezers to peel open the softened orange skin, picked out the tender golden segments, and placed them on a plate before handing it to Su Miao.
“Last time at the hospital, Grandpa asked you whether you were willing to forgive A-Yun. Now, do you have your answer?”
Su Miao took the porcelain plate with both hands and nodded. “I do.”
Su Jingliu looked at her.
Su Miao spoke without hesitation. “Grandpa, I don’t want to forgive her. Even if I know this will make things difficult for you, Dad, and Mom, I still don’t want to compromise this time.”
Su Jingliu nodded. “You’re right. This is an adult’s dilemma. Grandpa shouldn’t have put you in this position. It was wrong of me to ask you such a question. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been disappointed in me and run away from the hospital.”
Su Miao was stunned. “Grandpa, you don’t blame me?”
Su Jingliu smiled faintly. “Why would I blame you? You were wronged. Whatever emotions you have are normal. In the end, it’s Grandpa who failed to protect all of you.”
“Grandpa, please don’t say that.” Su Miao felt uneasy hearing it.
Su Jingliu let out a soft sigh. “I understand what you mean. But A-Yun must return now…”
“Grandpa, I understand.” Su Miao looked at the orange segments in her hand. “You don’t need me to forgive Su Yun for the sake of the bigger picture. Likewise, I can’t force you all to abandon your own flesh and blood because of my feelings. She is a child of the Su family, the biological daughter of my mother after ten months of pregnancy. These are facts. I will respect your decision.”
Su Jingliu looked at her in surprise. “You really think that way?”
“Yes.” Su Miao smiled faintly. “Jiang Huashan said that people should be fair. If Grandpa doesn’t force me to forgive Su Yun, then I have no right to ask you to hate her. Different positions lead to different dilemmas. Since you didn’t make things difficult for me, I have no right to make things difficult for you.”
Su Jingliu had never expected Su Miao to one day say something so clear-minded and independent.
After a moment of silence, he asked, “The Jiang Huashan you mentioned… is that the girl from the Shen family? You went to Nanwan to find her?”
Su Miao nodded. “Yes, Grandpa. Don’t you remember? She saved me.”
Su Jingliu’s expression became complicated. How could he forget something so important? That girl hadn’t just saved Su Miao—she had saved the Su family as well.
If Jiang Huashan hadn’t revealed the location of the shantytown in advance and repeatedly insisted that he personally lead people to seal off the area, Su Miao would have been beyond saving.
The Fu family had been planning for years, and the entire shantytown was under Fu Jiasheng’s control. All evidence would have been buried, and the Su family would have become a laughingstock across Whale Harbor because of Su Miao.
“When the situation settles, Grandpa will host a meal and invite your new friend to our home.”
Three years ago, Su Jingliu had made a similar request, and Su Miao had refused. Three years later, her answer was still the same.
“She’s my friend. I need to ask her first. If she agrees, then it’s fine.”
“Alright, alright.” Su Jingliu laughed and shook his head. Then he suddenly became serious again. “There’s one more thing Grandpa needs your opinion on… it’s about Su Li.”
Su Miao’s gaze turned subtle.
Su Jingliu continued, “She wants to see you.”
From the moment Su Li fell into the Su family’s hands, she had been demanding to see her biological daughter. She even threatened that if the Su family dared to harm her, Su Miao would one day avenge her.
Originally, Su Jingliu didn’t want to involve Su Miao in this matter, but the children had grown up—secrets could no longer be hidden.
Su Miao asked, “What does Mom think?”
That single word—“Mom”—already revealed Su Miao’s stance. Su Jingliu felt relieved. “Your mother hates what Su Li has done, but she distinguishes clearly between you and her.”
Su Miao’s eyes grew slightly moist. “I’m a child who was abandoned. I have no birth mother—only an adoptive mother.”
Su Jingliu nodded. With that sentence from Su Miao, he felt reassured.
Su Miao suddenly thought of something.
“But before that… I still want to meet her.”
