It was the first time Jiang Huashan had so vividly experienced what was called the butterfly effect.
Shen Mianzhi had only partially awakened, yet the entire Yucai campus was already undergoing earth-shaking changes.
The sudden rise of the student council president hit hardest those young masters and young ladies who were used to throwing their weight around.
A certain rich second-generation boy from the second year, in a bad mood, casually bullied a weaker student. Three minutes later, he was “invited” to have tea at the student council office. Because his attitude in admitting fault was unsatisfactory, Shen Mianzhi directly deducted thirty points and announced on the spot that he would be held back for observation.
The young master was stunned. Unconvinced, he called home to complain. But in the end, his family arrived at the school within thirty minutes and completed the retention procedures with the school in just ten.
It was said that he was even slapped by his own father.
“You’re a rich second-generation now. Say one more word, and you’ll become a negative second-generation.”
Academic credit points had never been taken seriously by Yucai students since the beginning. But once this “kill the chicken to scare the monkeys” move came out, everyone began desperately protecting their points—after all, no one wanted to arrive in the morning as a senior and end up a junior by the afternoon.
Fu Xiaoxiao, dissatisfied with Shen Mianzhi targeting her, tried to unite the newly risen elites and the old-guard young masters to collectively resist him. After all, this was everyone’s playground, and Shen Mianzhi’s rules were ruining their “gaming experience.”
But the elites at the top of the pyramid weren’t fools. Although Shen Mianzhi’s rules somewhat restricted them, they didn’t touch their core interests. Most were even happy to do her a favor.
Besides, what happened on the sports field that day was clear to anyone smart enough: provoke one Shen Mianzhi, and you wouldn’t just face her—you’d also deal with Shen Rang, who might start shooting recklessly; Jiang Huashan, who’d slash at anyone; Fu Sui’er, who’d leak information; Shen Qingyu, who attacked indiscriminately; and Shen Lanxi, who cleared the field like a killer.
Offend one, offend five. No matter how you looked at it, it was a losing deal.
After her attempt to turn people against Shen Mianzhi failed, Fu Xiaoxiao could only incite her older brother, Fu Wenbo, to help her stir up trouble.
“Brother, Shen Mianzhi is clearly targeting me. Those people are all cowards—don’t tell me you won’t even speak up for me?”
Fu Wenbo had been busy preparing for exams for the Military-Political University recently. When he had free time, he’d go to the “secret garden” to have fun, and he hadn’t paid attention to school disputes for quite a while.
Still, since Fu Xiaoxiao had come to him for help, he couldn’t just ignore her as her brother.
After thinking for a moment, he turned and nudged Yao Zilei’s arm. “Got any ideas?”
“Damn it!” Yao Zilei was in the middle of writing a love letter. His pen slipped, and the small heart he had just drawn sprouted a tail. Furious, he snapped, “I’ve been working on this all morning, and now it’s ruined!”
“….” Fu Wenbo’s expression turned complicated. Against his better judgment, he offered a suggestion, “Why not just draw another layer around it to cover it up?”
Yao Zilei’s eyes lit up as he quickly drew a bigger heart.
Fu Xiaoxiao looked confused. “Brother, what is Brother Lei writing?”
At that, Fu Wenbo also felt a headache coming on. “A love letter.”
“A love letter?!”
Yao Zilei was definitely not a good person. When it came to relationships, he never put in effort—if he liked someone, he simply took them. The girls, intimidated by him, didn’t dare resist, but he’d switch partners within a month every time. Writing a love letter was something unheard of for him.
“Who’s so capable?” Fu Xiaoxiao asked curiously, completely forgetting why she came.
Fu Wenbo pressed his forehead. “Jiang Huashan.”
Fu Xiaoxiao couldn’t smile anymore. She looked at Yao Zilei in disbelief. “Brother Lei, is that for real?”
Yao Zilei had just finished drawing the heart and happily blew on the ink. But it hadn’t dried yet, and the heart got blown into something resembling tree branches.
“Ah!” Yao Zilei felt like the sky had collapsed. He hurriedly drew an even bigger heart around it.
“….” Fu Xiaoxiao had never been this speechless in her life. She turned to Fu Wenbo. “How long has he been like this?”
Fu Wenbo replied, “Probably since that tennis game this summer. He teased a girl on the court and got hit on the head with a racket by Jiang Huashan. Guess that’s when he got knocked silly.”
“What do you idiots know!” Yao Zilei patched things up and finally produced a massive heart, looking smug. “This is true love.”
Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyelid twitched. “Brother A-Lei, did you forget how she screwed you over? Your leg almost got broken because of her.”
Yao Zilei rubbed his chin. “I thought about it afterward. It’s not entirely her fault. I was pretty awful back then too.”
He can actually reflect on himself? Fu Xiaoxiao’s tone turned cool. “Brother A-Lei, Jiang Huashan isn’t someone you can easily fool. Don’t tell me you really think writing a love letter will work?”
“I know.” Yao Zilei pulled out a suitcase from the drawer and opened it. “So I’m planning to write three hundred and sixty-five of them.”
“…” The corner of Fu Xiaoxiao’s mouth twitched. Turns out when someone is extremely speechless, they really do laugh instead.
Yao Zilei was brimming with enthusiasm. “I know you two have some friction between you. Not that I’m criticizing you, but you should really work on that temper of yours—stop always going against Jiang Huashan.”
Fu Xiaoxiao stood up, ready to leave.
Yao Zilei grabbed her. “Hey, don’t go! I was just looking for you. How about you help me? I promise, if this works out, I’ll definitely persuade her to get along peacefully with you.”
“You’ll persuade her?” Fu Xiaoxiao had never sounded so rational. “Brother A-Lei, why don’t you just drop it? With you like this, Jiang Huashan will play you to death.”
“Hey! What kind of talk is that? Are you looking down on a pure-love warrior?”
“…”
The two biggest bullying antagonists of Yucai—one obsessed with his secret garden, the other falling head over heels in love. Seeing neither of them was reliable, Fu Xiaoxiao turned and went to the art building to find Zhou Yanheng instead.
After the second class in the morning, it was time for the break exercises.
Students from the entire Yingcai building poured out all at once. The school leaders were pleasantly surprised—after all, even the opening ceremony had never been this orderly before.
Stirring music echoed through corridors and classrooms. Jiang Huashan sat up listlessly, resting her chin on one hand as she watched the shifting light and shadows on the windowsill.
Knock, knock—
A sound came from the classroom door.
She turned her head to look.
Shen Mianzhi stood within the light, her clear, doe-like eyes meeting the bright sun, shimmering as she gazed at her.
The moment their eyes met, Shen Mianzhi’s fingertips curled slightly. She took a quiet breath in her heart and slowly walked into the classroom.
“Can I borrow a bit of your time?”
A classroom wasn’t the right place to share secrets, so Shen Mianzhi brought Jiang Huashan to the open-air balcony of the teaching building. To prevent accidents, the fire door leading to the terrace was locked, and only the dean had the key.
Shen Mianzhi took a key out of her pocket. With a soft twist of the lock, it clicked open.
She said, “This morning, I went to the dean’s office and told the teacher I wanted to go up to the terrace to take a look. He gave me the key without hesitation. That’s when I suddenly understood—what’s been trapping me was never societal rules, but myself.”
As she finished speaking, she braced both hands against the door and pushed forward with force.
In an instant, a dazzling white light spilled through the crack.
Shen Mianzhi turned back, extending her hand toward Jiang Huashan.
She smiled. Her face, backlit, looked almost transparent—only the tear mole beneath the corner of her right eye appeared vividly alive.
