HLM – Chapter 906 Parrots Fight While the White Fox Lurks Behind

Happy Little Mayor 6 min read 906 of 1443 9

The little white fox’s name was decided just like that. After a few lessons, it knew that “Princess” was its name. Whenever someone called “Princess,” it would happily run over.

This is the power of the Soul Heart.

However, the little white fox was still a foodie. It would run over when called, but if it found there was no food, the next time the same voice called it, it wouldn’t be as enthusiastic. But as long as it was given something to eat—even a single kernel of corn or a sunflower seed—it would obey very well afterwards.

Moreover, whoever usually gave it the most and best food, when multiple people called it at the same time, it would run to the one who fed it the most.

Observing these patterns, Bartier exclaimed, “So the white fox is this smart? I never knew!”

Wang Bo thought to himself that this had to be the work of the Soul Heart. This foodie was clearly not naturally this clever.

The little white fox was interested in all food, but it wasn’t lazy. It preferred to work for its own meals.

How did it do that? For example, climbing onto the dining table to get food, hunting snow pigeons, and it was very interested in flying birds—the Commander and the Commissar had become its targets.

The two little parrots were also in trouble. The Fat Cat brothers had barely let them off, and now along came a little white fox whose agility wasn’t inferior to the Fat Cat brothers.

On the first day of the New Year, a public holiday in New Zealand, Wang Bo had nothing to do and planned to go fishing on the lake.

As soon as he stepped outside, he saw the little white fox at the door eyeing the Commander and Commissar with ill intent.

The two silly parrots were fighting again—their internal squabbles never ceased.

The African Grey parrot was bigger than the Yellow-headed Amazon, meaning the Commander had both intelligence and size advantage. It was smarter and stronger than the Commissar.

But!

The Commissar was fierce. Especially after realizing it could never be friends with the Commander, it always showed a “fight to the death” stance whenever facing the Commander.

Normally, the Commissar was gentle. The Fat Cat brothers were very interested in birds, but coexisted peacefully with the Commissar.

Because the Commissar would occasionally help them get food. For instance, there might be dried meat or fresh fruit on a high shelf that they couldn’t reach. The Commissar would fly up and get some for them. Eating favors, the Fat Cat brothers understood this principle and gradually stopped making things difficult for the Commissar.

Perhaps the Commander was annoyed by this attitude. When it first encountered the Fat Cat brothers, it was constantly on edge, having to use both wits and strength to survive.

When the Commissar arrived, the Commander had hoped to watch some excitement, but the Fat Cat brothers didn’t confront the Commissar. In fact, sometimes they even cooperated to steal food! This was a huge disappointment!

Disappointment turned into anger. “I was once treated like food, scared all the time, and now you’re having fun?”

In short, the two sides hated each other’s guts, and the conflict never ended.

Why they clashed this time, Wang Bo didn’t know—and didn’t bother to find out.

After tidying up the castle a bit, the fountain in the inner courtyard was working again, the sparkling water jumping day and night. At this moment, the two little parrots were confronting each other on the fountain’s edge.

Unlike other animals, parrots could talk, which made their battle rather interesting.

Commander: “Ah, your mom exploded! Ah, you stole my grapes!”

Commissar glared: “Ah, the grapes are mine! Ah, come here, I’ll bite you!”

Commander, flustered, paced back and forth: “Ah, don’t copy me! Ah, I’ll bite you to death!”

The Commissar leisurely preened its feathers, sneering: “You can’t even speak properly—a dumb bird!”

If a stranger or someone familiar with parrots saw this, they would be shocked.

Parrots can speak, yes, but very few develop self-awareness. They are like robots: they can clean, cook, or answer questions under programmed control. Without programming, they can do nothing.

Parrots are similar. They can speak because they learn and repeat, but they don’t understand the meaning. When people say some parrots have the intelligence of a child, that usually refers to learning ability, not self-awareness.

But the Commander and Commissar had self-awareness. They not only understood things like ordinary parrots but could also reason about them. That’s what was truly astonishing.

Take their verbal sparring, for example. The words they used were learned and combined to express their own intentions.

This was remarkable. If Wang Bo wished, he could sell these two parrots for a fortune—many wealthy people would love such entertaining companions.

Wang Bo thought to himself as the parrots continued their argument. The Commissar mocked the Commander for being inarticulate, and the Commander shouted: “Ah, I’ll bite you! Ah, I’ll bite you!”

The Commissar fluffed its feathers: “Come and try! I’ll bite you!”

Eventually, their intelligence couldn’t compare to humans. Both got tangled in words, yelling about biting each other, and didn’t notice the white fox quietly approaching the fountain.

Actually, Wang Bo hadn’t noticed either. Only when he glanced sideways did he see the white fox hiding behind a splash of water. He had no idea how it had snuck there.

This was the hunting skill of the Arctic fox. Especially in snow, once they lock onto prey, wild birds rarely evade them.

The Arctic fox moved silently. Wang Bo, worried about the safety of the two little birds, decided to warn them: “Hey, stop arguing. If you can fight, just fight—no more talking!”

The parrots, startled by his shout, quieted down. The Commissar acted particularly obedient, tucking its wings and preening at the edge of the fountain.

This was a cunning little trickster, Wang Bo realized.

The Commander, however, couldn’t help its nature. It stayed quiet for only a few seconds before brazenly trying to sneak behind the Commissar to attack.

But it wasn’t an Arctic fox. The Commissar had been keeping an eye on it, so every move was monitored.

Thinking it was being sneaky, the Commander lunged like a little calf to try to push the Commissar into the water.

But the Yellow-headed Amazon’s flight ability was strong. The Commissar flapped its wings suddenly and flew up.

The African Grey could also fly well, but the Commander was fat and lazy. Inertia prevented it from taking off in time, and it fell straight into the fountain.

At that moment, the hidden Princess bared her fangs, swished her big tail, and in a flash, leaped into the fountain, snapping her jaws at the Commander.

With flowing water in the pool, the Commander was soaked, and now trying to fly was just a dream.
