While Wang Bo was still overwhelmed on his end, Zhuang Ding sniffed a rag doll on the ground and suddenly took off in a swift, agile stride toward a nearby collapsed building. It then began sniffing the rubble pile intently.
Noticing the scene, Charlie’s eyes lit up. “Shit! Wang, look at Zhuang Ding! It can tell which buildings have people trapped underneath!”
Everyone immediately turned their gaze toward the dog. Zhuang Ding, sensing their attention, turned back and blinked innocently at Wang Bo, as if saying, This has nothing to do with me. I didn’t do anything!
Wang Bo’s spirits lifted. He quickly strode over and hugged the dog, asking urgently, “Boy, tell me—where are people buried? Come on, sniff around! Find where there are survivors!”
Hearing his tone and watching his gestures, Zhuang Ding gradually understood the command.
Though it had no formal disaster rescue training, the bloodline of a Mastiff naturally carried tracking and search instincts. Once it grasped Wang Bo’s instructions, it immediately began pawing at the rubble, digging rapidly.
No doubt about it—there were people trapped under this debris!
Realizing this, Wang Bo immediately shouted, “Quick, quick! Everyone, clear away the debris! There are people underneath! There are people below!”
A dozen strong men got to work, clearing the rubble with both their hands and shovels. Meanwhile, Zhuang Ding stood aside, constantly sniffing and giving the rescuers the most accurate directions, allowing them to dig directly toward the trapped individuals.
Even without professional rescue equipment, their efficiency was remarkable. There was no need to clear everything—just follow Zhuang Ding’s guidance.
This building was mostly wooden, with a rare roof made from straw and tree bark. There were no heavy bricks or stones. With a group of strong men working hard for half an hour, a slender arm finally emerged from the rubble.
Upon seeing the arm, Wang Bo and the others became instantly excited. Charlie roared, “Careful, you bastards! Be damn careful! Doctors! Nurses! Get over here, quick!”
After some initial delay, several hospitals from Oak City had dispatched ambulances, and at least twenty doctors and nurses had arrived in the town to begin treating the wounded.
Other teams were still digging through rubble nearby, but none had successfully rescued anyone. The reason was simple—they had no clear targets and were just digging blindly, resulting in very low efficiency.
Seeing that Wang Bo’s team had already saved someone, other rescuers rushed over, erupting in a flurry of chatter:
“God bless, did they really rescue someone?”
“How did they do it so fast? Are they professionals?”
“Doesn’t seem like it. I recognize that Asian guy—they only just arrived…”
A doctor arrived quickly with two nurses in tow. Wang Bo and the others had already pulled out the person attached to that slender arm—a boy around ten years old, his body bloody and battered, but still breathing, though unconscious.
The doctor immediately inserted an oxygen tube into the boy’s nose and quickly assessed him. His face lit up with excitement. “Thank the Lord! Get the stretcher! It’s just external injuries—he’s going to be okay!”
After rescuing the boy, Wang Bo and his team prepared to move to another collapsed site. At that moment, Zhuang Ding tugged at his shirt hem with its mouth and barked toward the rubble next to where the boy had been found.
Wang Bo paused, then immediately reacted. “Shit—there’s someone else next to him! It must be the kid’s family! Dig! Dig quickly!”
The onlookers, hearing his shout, also rushed forward. Twenty-odd strong men joined the digging effort with renewed urgency, moving even faster.
Sure enough, ten minutes later, after clearing a large pile of debris, a voice suddenly rang out from below: “Help! Help! Help!”
One of the rescuers yelled, “It’s the woman from the Rabik family! Hurry, faster, brothers, dig faster!”
After another round of effort, a woman was pulled out. She was in much better shape than the boy—not unconscious and without obvious injuries.
Once rescued, the woman became highly emotional. She grabbed Bowen’s hand and cried out, “Save my child! Save my husband! They’re still buried down there! Oh, Great Mori! When the earthquake hit, I hid under the table—but my husband and child disappeared…”
A Māori man said, “Your son’s already been rescued. He’s fine. Is Rabik still down there? Step aside! Where exactly is he?”
Hearing her son was safe, the woman was first overjoyed, then began sobbing again. “I don’t know… I don’t know where my husband is…”
Zhuang Ding leapt to the side of the ruins and sniffed again, then started digging through the mess with its paws, barking twice.
By now, everyone understood Zhuang Ding’s capability. Seeing it act again, no one waited for Wang Bo’s orders—they surged forward and started digging furiously.
The Māori woman was just as fierce, clawing and pulling with even more strength than the men.
Seeing how many people had joined in, Wang Bo had another idea. He pulled Charlie aside and said, “You stay here with them. I’m taking Zhuang Ding—we need to make the most of its ability and find more survivors.”
Charlie nodded heavily. “Go, Wang. Let Zhuang Ding show its full strength!”
Wang Bo gave a whistle, and the dog immediately followed him out. He pointed to another collapsed building nearby and said, “Quick, buddy—anyone in there?”
Zhuang Ding wagged its tail and darted up, sniffing the gaps in the rubble. It then returned and sat down—clearly, no one was inside.
Wang Bo led Zhuang Ding to a third collapsed building. This one had already been partially dug into, but no one had been found. Zhuang Ding ran up, sniffed, and then began barking loudly as it scratched the ground with its paws.
Nearby rescuers, already aware of Zhuang Ding’s ability, instantly recognized the signal—there were people here. They began digging right where the dog had indicated.
With the dog’s guidance, the excavation was very efficient. In just over twenty minutes, after clearing away bricks and wood, an unconscious man was pulled out.
The doctor checked his pupils and heartbeat, then nodded. “Vital signs are stable. But we can’t rule out internal bleeding—be careful. Get him on the ambulance, fast!”
“Ohhh!”
“Hurrah! Hurrah!”
“What a miracle dog!”
Cheers rang out all around, and everyone gave Zhuang Ding a thumbs-up.
Wang Bo led Zhuang Ding to the next house. By now, its legend had begun to spread. Wherever the man and dog pair went, the rescuers would step aside and await instructions.
After searching through seven or eight buildings, a stout Māori man stumbled over, gasping. He grabbed Wang Bo’s hand and cried out, “Come to my house! Please! My God—my children and my parents are trapped under there… I’m begging you! Please help me find them! I’ll pay, I’ll pay a lot!”
