“Who’s taking the undercover job?” Wang Bo asked.

Sweet Boy nodded. “Let me do it. I’m a new face.”

Conley added, “One person won’t be enough. I’ll help. I’ll partner with Sweet Boy.”

Although Conley had been in Sunset Town for two and a half years, he was a technical officer who rarely went on field operations, mainly providing technical support. As a result, many people didn’t know him well. Moreover, he came from a medical family and was familiar with hallucinogens like GHB. Working undercover with Sweet Boy would be more reliable.

After a brief discussion with Uncle Bing and the others, Wang Bo agreed to their request. The two really did make a good pair.

“Conley, you’re responsible for looking for traces of GHB. Sweet Boy, protect him. Don’t bring a gun,” Wang Bo instructed them. “If you find anything, don’t make a scene. Notify us to make the arrests, then move on to the next group.”

After a normal person takes GHB, they usually feel comfort, pleasure, and relaxation after about fifteen minutes. Depending on the dosage, GHB’s direct effects on the body can last up to three hours.

In addition, repeated use of GHB can cause both psychological and physiological dependence—commonly known as drug addiction. Addicts will unconsciously want to take GHB frequently, believing it makes their behavior more “normal” and makes them feel more relaxed and happy.

GHB had appeared in New Zealand about twenty years ago and had always been used in the medical field. But in the past two years, as international drug crackdowns intensified and illegal drugs became harder to bring into New Zealand, addicts began looking for substitutes.

This substance was easy to buy but hard to control in dosage. Tolerance varied from person to person; even the same person might need different amounts at different times to feel the effects. As a result, some people kept increasing the dose in pursuit of a stronger high, leading to serious respiratory problems. Loss of consciousness was even more common.

In 2012, the New Zealand government listed GHB under the National Drug Abuse Control Act, defining it as a Class B controlled substance.

After learning all this, Wang Bo sighed. “Damn it. Anti-drug work really is a long and difficult road. There are so many kinds of drugs—you can never be fully on guard.”

Conley comforted him. “We’ll check them one by one. We’ll definitely build a clean, pollution-free town.”

Starting at dusk, the beacon towers in the central square began to roar with towering flames.

To protect the environment, the towers used smokeless charcoal. Bag after bag of charcoal was poured in, and the flames burned brighter and stronger. Young people from many surrounding towns came specially to attend the party, and when they saw the flames rise, cheers erupted across the square.

The beacon towers were Wang Bo’s idea. First, they set the mood. Second, they could be used for barbecuing—though how well things were grilled was another matter. Third, there were openings at the bottom that could be used to prepare Hāngi-style food.

The Wellington Police Department drove in a command vehicle. Wang Bo sat inside, binoculars in hand, observing the reveling youths.

Chief Smith told him, “GHB dissolves very easily in water and beverages, but it has a slight salty taste and a faint soap-like smell. So people often dissolve it in alcoholic drinks, making it very difficult for ordinary people to detect by sight, smell, or taste.”

Wang Bo said, “That makes it easy to use as anti drug, right?”

Smith nodded. “Yes. And it’s also easily used by some bastards. After girls drink alcohol laced with GHB, they can lose consciousness in just over ten minutes.”

What might happen after a girl loses consciousness needed no further explanation.

Wang Bo clenched his teeth. “Damn these scum. If I catch anyone doing that tonight, I swear I’ll send them to prison for the rest of their lives!”

He had just become a father to a daughter, and he now hated those men who preyed on girls more than ever.

Because of this, he called Sweet Boy. “I won’t allow you to carry a gun, but take a combat knife this time. If they dare resist, deal with them!”

Sweet Boy laughed. “That’s great. I hope they do resist. Honestly, it’s been so long since I got to fight—I’ve been finding life a bit too boring.”

Night fell, and the flames in the central square grew ever more intense.

Seeing the fire soar more than ten meters high, Chief Smith looked astonished. “My God, how did you manage to get flames this high?”

Wang Bo said proudly, “Not bad, right? It’s my design. That beacon tower is the core—it’s kind of like a pagoda, with every level able to burn. The flames link together, and with air being drawn in from below and blown upward, you get this effect.”

Ice and fire intertwined—on one side, towering flames; once the music and dance beats started, even higher fountains shot into the air. The two complemented each other, greatly enhancing the party atmosphere.

“So cool,” a young police officer in the vehicle whistled.

The number of partygoers increased rapidly. Parking lots around the square were soon filled with all kinds of cars, and some people arrived by minibuses. As soon as they parked, crowds poured out.

Seeing this scene, Chief Smith turned around and said, “Your place is really lively.”

Wang Bo spread his hands helplessly. “Everyone loves Sunset Town. What can I do?”

The young officer who had whistled earlier nodded. “That’s right. Sunset Town’s parties have already become the most talked-about parties in New Zealand. In the future, Mayor Wang, you’ll probably have to put in more effort—large-scale parties are always prone to incidents.”

On the central stage, a band was screaming themselves hoarse. Cheers rang out everywhere in the square. In the beer area, people lined up to pay and exchange money for beer.

There was also a barbecue area. Although people had to pay for grilled meat and vegetables, everything was made with top-quality beef, lamb, pork, chicken, duck, and fish from Sunset Ranch, sold at local prices—one of the party’s biggest attractions.

At most parties, people go mainly to drink. Sunset Town’s parties were different. Besides drinking, people came to gorge themselves. The food here was even more famous than the alcohol.

What Wang Bo hoped would make Sunset Town’s parties famous above all else was order.

Just as the party officially began, Conley sent a signal.

Chief Smith waved his hand, and the plainclothes officers immediately moved out. Conley and Sweet Boy were equipped with precise positioning devices accurate to within half a meter, making them easy to locate.

Uncle Bing and his son, Wang Bo, and Chief Smith each led a team, encircling the area from the southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest.

They quickly found Conley and Sweet Boy. Nearby, two young men were chatting and joking with several girls.

“Damn it—take them down!” Wang Bo gave the order through the earpiece.
