The trainees of Unit 181 would surely never forget this day for the rest of their lives.
Watching the “robbers” standing there with guns in hand and blades slung at their sides, chatting and laughing with them, the trainees were completely bewildered, still unable to adapt to this sudden and drastic turn of events.
The driver who had supposedly had his carotid artery severed earlier walked in, wiping his neck as he complained, “This simulated blood isn’t even as good as tomato juice. It has such a sharp, irritating smell.”
Another police officer walked in, pointed at the bank, and said, “Who’s going to clean up that fake corpse? It’s disgusting. Who had such a twisted sense of humor—putting a watermelon on it?”
Atulu took off his mask and chuckled. “I did that. I wanted to imitate the effect of part of the body being smashed after a fall from a great height. How is it—pretty realistic, right?”
Superintendent Ferguson was very dissatisfied and said to Wang Bo, “Why didn’t you wait for us to arrive before revealing the truth? Didn’t we agree to shout ‘Happy April Fool’s Day’ together?”
Wang Bo looked innocent. “Did we? Oh, maybe I didn’t hear it at the time.”
Sweet Boy said, “Superintendent, he’s taking revenge on us—revenge for letting us play the robbers while he still had to play a cop. You should punish him.”
Wang Bo said, “The superintendent definitely won’t do that.”
“Why not?”
“Because I have a big gift for him.” He took out the will and handed it to the superintendent. “Look—what’s this? The content is really interesting. Take a good look.”
The trainees of Unit 181 immediately grew anxious at the sight of this. Someone said angrily, “You actually used this to fool us? That’s going too far!”
Wang Bo pointed at Ferguson and said, “That’s the deputy director of the Police Academy, Superintendent Ferguson. Go complain to him. But today is April Fool’s Day—hopefully you can still enjoy yourselves.”
Several female officers were actually quite open-minded about it. They started taking photos with the trainees dressed as robbers, and some even went to take pictures with the blood-smeared fake corpses.
One male trainee was furious. “You guys come back— we were totally played…”
A female officer turned around and said, “But isn’t this still better than us actually having to fight real robbers? I just got married. I don’t want to go through something like that.”
When some of the male officers thought about it, they found she had a point, and they shook their heads with bitter smiles.
Buckerd sighed. “Damn it, impossible to guard against. When we got on the bus, we were even saying we had to beware of pranks from Unit 180.”
“Who would’ve thought they’d even tap into the police radio?”
The driver laughed. “No, they didn’t. That wasn’t the police radio at all—I tuned into the Police Academy’s campus radio.”
Buckerd shouted, “Impossible! I’d never mistake Rebecca’s voice—she’s my goddess!”
“Your goddess is my niece,” Superintendent Ferguson said with a laugh. “She happened to be on vacation, so I called her to the Police Academy to help out.”
“Does that mean we can see Rebecca at the academy?” A group of male officers immediately lit up with excitement.
The mention of Rebecca completely put an end to their complaints about the prank.
Wang Bo waved his hand and said, “Alright, everyone leave the convenience store first—they still need to do business. And Sweet Boy, go calculate it—see how much compensation we’ll need to pay this time.”
One trainee said, “You guys really went all out. A burning police car, shattered bank office windows, so many bullet holes, and damage to public order on the street…”
Atulu shrugged. “The burning police car was a scrapped vehicle—it was going to the junkyard anyway, so it didn’t cost anything. As for the bank’s glass, our boss will pay for that—he’s friends with the president of Westpac.”
“The bullet holes were all fake, just spray paint. Wash it off and it’s fine. And as for damage to public order? None at all. This was a drill, an officially approved exercise by the Wellington Police Headquarters. So the cost isn’t nearly as big as you imagine.”
The arrival of Unit 181 meant that Unit 180 was finally about to leave.
After finishing up the cleanup of this prank and sharing those amusing wills, everyone went their separate ways.
They had come as four people; they left as five. Wang Bo brought back a new recruit—Sweet Boy.
And this time, they didn’t have to endure a long drive by car. Air New Zealand had opened a route from Wellington to Sunset Town, just a one-hour flight.
There were three flights a week. On April 2nd, there was one flight. The five of them boarded the plane chatting and laughing, waiting for takeoff.
After finding his seat, Atulu said contentedly, “Shit, I’m really living the life now—planes straight to my doorstep. Going to Wellington or Auckland will be so convenient from now on.”
Wang Bo smiled. “Too bad there are still too few flights. If there were daily flights, that would be perfect.”
Sweet Boy exclaimed in amazement, “That’s incredible. The town even has an airport, and it’s connected to both Auckland and Wellington.”
Wang Bo said, “For now, it’s only connected to those two cities. But routes to Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, and other cities are also in progress. Those flights will open soon.”
Most of the passengers heading to Sunset Town were tourists, along with some townsfolk. They were fairly well-off now. New Zealanders loved to enjoy life—whenever they had free time, they would fly to Wellington for fun.
Soon after Wang Bo and the others boarded, someone came over to greet them:
“Huh? Mayor? And officers? What are you doing in Wellington?”
“Long time no see, Mayor. We thought you’d abandoned Sunset Town.”
“They said you went on a police mission—was it an undercover operation?”
Wang Bo greeted the townspeople and then introduced Sweet Boy. “I went for training. This is Sunset Town’s new police officer—an elite decorated soldier of the New Zealand Army, Officer Sweet Boy.”
Sweet Boy struck a cool salute.
The plane soon began to taxi. After climbing briefly, it was already preparing to descend—Sunset Town was right below them.
Atulu yawned. “Feels like I just took a nap and I’m already home.”
The plane slowly landed at the airport. Sunset Town’s airport was relatively small. Seeing many people gathered along the road inside the airport, Wang Bo asked in confusion, “What are they doing?”
After landing, those people happened to be standing right at the passengers’ exit. A red carpet had been laid along this stretch, and the captain came over to invite them to disembark first.
Once they got off, there was a band behind the red carpet. The town’s priest was conducting, and the music began to play.
Wang Bo spotted Eva and many familiar faces in the crowd—Atulu’s family, his subordinates, and of course Zhuang Ding, Queen, and the others.
Seeing this, he smiled and walked over to hug Eva. “This must be your doing, right?”
Eva stood there with her belly slightly swollen and said, “Yes, Officer Wang. Welcome back after completing your studies—and congratulations on becoming a qualified police chief.”
Wang Bo had complained over the phone that the graduation banquet had been too perfunctory, without even a proper graduation ceremony.
It was probably because of that that Eva organized everyone to welcome them back, making up for the regret of not having a graduation ceremony.
