Three mistakes?
Wang Bo glared at him. “Are you kidding me, Old Hani? You know this—this guy’s one slip-up cost me twenty million! Twenty million! If he messes up two more times, damn it, he’ll take my life down with him!”
Hani sighed and said, “To fire someone directly, it has to be either serious misconduct or negligence, or using dangerous methods at work that endanger their own health or life or that of colleagues, or bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, or embezzlement or fraud.”
Wang Bo thought for a moment and shook his head. “Even though he caused me huge losses this time, using one of those reasons to fire him… I just can’t. That would be too cruel.”
Employees dismissed for such reasons would have a hard time finding another suitable job.
Since it was his first time firing someone, Wang Bo didn’t want to make it too ugly.
Hani spread his hands. “Then I can only suggest you talk to him and try to get him to resign voluntarily. But it will be hard, because that would mean he loses his salary compensation.”
“Can I privately give him some compensation?”
Hani said, “No, boss. New Zealand strictly forbids private transactions that circumvent tax laws. If he gets evidence and sues you, you’ll be in even bigger trouble.”
Wang Bo slumped into his chair. “Damn it, who the hell is in charge here? Even firing one person is such a hassle?”
Hani said helplessly, “That’s the reality in New Zealand. If you were an employee, you’d love this kind of workplace. After all, employees are the weaker party.”
For now, the matter was set aside. Actually, firing Miles would have been easy—he could just set a small trap to make Miles fall for it. But that would go against his conscience; Wang Bo always acted according to principle.
Hani understood and suggested Wang Bo talk to Miles, trying to get him to resign voluntarily.
After considering it, Wang Bo called Miles in.
Since it was already decided to keep the library, some information didn’t need to be concealed. Atulu and the others explained Wang Bo’s previous thoughts—setting up a library required too much funding and wasn’t very necessary.
Miles wasn’t stupid. He knew he had made a mistake, so he came in trembling.
Wang Bo got straight to the point. “You know why I called you here, right? I hope we can part ways peacefully. Miles, it’s no longer appropriate for you to stay in the government.”
Miles said, “Boss, you can’t fire me like this. I didn’t mean any harm. When you told me this news, you didn’t tell me not to spread it!”
Wang Bo frowned. “When did I tell you this news? Damn it, you overheard it when you entered the office.”
“But you didn’t emphasize that it couldn’t be shared,” Miles argued.
Wang Bo said, “Be honest, Miles. Quite a few people know this news. I didn’t tell them not to share it. But until you found out, it was kept well. Don’t you see a problem with how you handled it?”
Miles said, “I admit I’m not very smart, but that’s not a reason for you to fire me. I don’t want to resign either.”
Of course he didn’t want to resign. Public salaries in Sunset Town were high. Even a regular employee like him earned five thousand, plus quarterly bonuses.
Wang Bo asked, “Then what would make you willing to resign?”
Miles said, “According to contract law, compensate me for 18 months’ salary. Boss, then I’d be willing to resign.”
Wang Bo slammed the table and shook his head. “No, don’t even think about it. You made a mistake and now you want to extort me? Ha! Buddy, have I been too kind all this time? Don’t mistake modesty for weakness!”
Miles refused to resign voluntarily. He insisted his actions were foolish but not malicious, and being fired would be unfair.
Wang Bo didn’t have time to argue. Where in the world is everything fair?
If unfairness had to be mentioned, it was just bad luck for him. As Sunset Town and the employees of Sunset LLC grew, Wang Bo needed an opportunity to make an example.
Miles just happened to be in the line of fire—if he didn’t die, who would?
That afternoon, Wang Bo was about to hold a meeting to discuss firing Miles when Chief Smith suddenly called.
The chief’s voice was urgent: “Wang, quickly set up a checkpoint on Highway 8! Hurry, a gang of robbers is fleeing along the road toward your direction!”
Wang Bo hurriedly asked, “Where are they now? How many? What’s their firepower?”
The chief shouted, “Set up the checkpoint now! Damn it, the numbers aren’t clear. Two vehicles in total! Tell your guys to be careful—they have heavy firepower!”
From the phone, Wang Bo heard urgent sirens and crisp gunfire. Combined with the chief’s tone, he quickly understood the severity.
After hanging up, he immediately called all the police together through Uncle Bing.
Wang Bo opened the armory. “Grab your own guns. Sam, organize the AOS squad. Conley, you and one partner stay in the control room to monitor the cameras. The rest of you, follow me.”
Atulu, seeing the use of AOS, nervously asked, “What’s going on, boss?”
Wang Bo didn’t answer immediately. He asked, “Do we have bulletproof vests?”
Sam raised his hand. “The AOS squad has twelve sets. The others can’t get here quickly, but we can wear these for now.”
Wang Bo nodded. “Each field officer gets one. Uncle Bing, you and your team set up roadblocks. Hide yourselves well.”
With the AOS squad mobilized and bulletproof vests on, everyone grew tense.
Wang Bo briefed them: “A gang of robbers is on Highway 8. Chief Smith is chasing them. They have heavy firepower and two vehicles. Conley, coordinate with them to get footage and update us.”
Uncle Bing said, “Our force is a bit small, boss. I suggest we mobilize a few more people to help set up roadblocks.”
Wang Bo nodded and quickly went to the main hall. “Listen up, everyone. A group of vicious criminals is approaching Sunset Town on Highway 8. We need to stop them. Police forces are insufficient—we need your help.”
Elizabeth stood. “I’ll go, boss.”
Kidd hurriedly stopped her. “So many men. You can’t go. Boss, I’ll go.”
Wang Bo smiled and pointed at Miles. “You’re coming too.”
Miles was stunned and instinctively refused. “No, that’s not my duty. I—”
“Then you’re fired,” Wang Bo interrupted.
This was clever of him. When Bing mentioned the police mobilization, Wang Bo remembered an interesting rule and used it to solve the problem of Miles refusing to leave.
