HLM -Chapter 1132 Catch the Thief!

Happy Little Mayor 6 min read 1132 of 1443 32

Wang Bo brought a litter of Chinese rural dogs from home. These dogs quickly grew up at the animal ranch and ran around everywhere all day. He felt he couldn’t just leave them there, but they weren’t suitable as herding dogs. After thinking it over, he took them to the shop beside the forest. Just like the white yak, they were rented out to tourists as helpers for mountain trips.

This job was perfect for Chinese rural dogs—they were brave, loyal, and naturally had the genes to run through the forest. So once they were put to work, they fit the role very well.

Du Zewen and Xu Tao exchanged glances. Du Zewen said, “Old Xu, why don’t we take a dog too? Just in case something happens, it’s reassuring to have one.”

Xu Tao asked, “What could possibly happen? Sunset Town has very good security—New Zealand in general is very safe.”

Du Zewen thought for a moment but insisted, “Better to be safe. We’ve all brought our wives, and they can’t have any accidents.”

That hit the mark, and Xu Tao agreed. They went to choose a dog. At the back, they saw four dogs left, playing under a tree. Looking at them, they were dumbfounded: “Wait…aren’t these the rural dogs from home?”

“They do look like them. Xu Tao, look at that one—isn’t it like your Big Yellow?”

“Damn, it’s exactly the same!”

The rural dogs noticed the Chinese visitors and stopped playing. They trotted over, intelligently sitting in front of them and wagging their tails.

The staff said, “Renting a dog for a day costs 20 dollars. But you have to feed them properly—don’t give them random food. It’s best to use our dog food. You can check it out; it’s sold online at the lowest prices.”

Du Zewen said, “No problem, the price isn’t high. But which one should we rent?”

The four dogs were all mottled. One was yellow and white; the other three were black and white. They were all very obedient, sitting there with big, blinking eyes. The two girls were instantly smitten.

Xu Tao said, “I want this one, Big Yellow!”

Zheng Anjing said, “This spotted one is very pretty too. How about we take the spotted one?”

She tentatively reached out, and the four dogs were gentle. Unlike home rural dogs, which were wary of strangers, these came closer and licked her hand with their tongues.

The girls melted even more. Taking any one and leaving the others behind would make them sad.

The staff noticed and said curiously, “They normally aren’t this friendly with strangers. How about this—you take all of them. We’ll charge the price of two dogs, so 40 dollars.”

Xu Tao said, “We don’t need that many.”

The staff smiled, “Bringing four dogs up the mountain will cover several days’ food. They might catch rabbits and wild chickens—the mountain is full of them.”

“Hubby, I want to take them all!” Zheng Anjing pulled out her trump card and started to act cute.

Forty dollars for four dogs was a good deal. The two men exchanged glances and agreed.

The men carried the gear, the women carried the food, and the four dogs happily led the way as they headed up the mountain.

The staff had been right—having four dogs meant they didn’t even need to bring food. After setting up camp, the four went for a stroll and returned with four fat rabbits.

“What good dogs!” Zheng Anjing gave them dog food as a reward.

Du Zewen and Song Jiali snuggled together. They chose a small hilltop from which they could see the bright red sunset.

The fiery clouds in the sky were spectacular. As the sun set, stars began to twinkle brilliantly.

They lit two stoves—one for roasting rabbits, the other for stewing wild chickens. Warm and perfect for cooking.

Around the cozy fire, each of the four people had a dog. People and dogs snuggled together, chatting. Song Jiali said emotionally, “I wish time could stop right now.”

Thinking about returning to the city, back to work, scheming with others, and expanding their social circles, under the starry sky and the eternal dome above, that life felt exhausting.

This mountain life was so beautiful. They enjoyed the serene and relaxed atmosphere and didn’t go to sleep. They hugged the dogs and tended the fire until midnight.

As they prepared to return to their tent, suddenly Big Yellow stood up. Almost simultaneously, the other dogs also stood, staring toward true north with sharp, focused eyes.

“What’s wrong? Don’t scare me!” Zheng Anjing said, worried.

Xu Tao, who had grown up with dogs, said, “Don’t be afraid. It’s nothing serious, but there’s probably something going on. You stay here; I’ll go check.”

Zheng Anjing grabbed him, “No! We go together. I always see in horror movies that things happen when people split up.”

Even Song Jiali, who wasn’t afraid at first, felt scared. So the four of them, holding the dogs and flashlights, cautiously moved north.

Wang Bo was sound asleep when a phone call woke him.

Groggily, he answered. It was Atulu: “Boss, someone reported on the mountain—they say they’ve encountered loggers. How should we handle it?”

Hearing someone stealing his trees, Wang Bo immediately became alert. He asked, “Where are the loggers? Who reported this?”

“Atulu said four tourists reported it—fellow Chinese tourists. I tracked their phones; the logging area is north of the Bitiao Danfeng Mountains.”

Wang Bo got anxious: “Then what are you waiting for? Quickly mobilize people, use helicopters for support. We must protect Bitiao Danfeng!”

He opened the map to assess the situation. Unfortunately, the logging area was outside Bitiao Danfeng Mountain and beyond the jurisdiction of the Territory Heart, so he couldn’t see the exact details.

However, the Guard Heart was alert, clearly already on pre-warning, though Wang Bo had missed it while asleep.

The duty officer notified other police, and the police force quickly assembled.

The town police station was no longer a small team—the force had grown to 14 officers.

Wang Bo made arrangements: Uncle Bing would lead people with a helicopter, he, Gerald, and Kang Li each took three people, splitting into three teams to capture the loggers.

New Zealand has vast forest resources. Its timber production and processing industry is a global model for sustainable forestry.

Nevertheless, illegal logging is common. These loggers don’t have licenses; they are poachers, leaving destruction in their wake.

The most supplied wood in New Zealand is radiata pine, followed by Douglas fir (also called American fir). Both trees were abundant on Wang Bo’s land.

In “Bitiao Danfeng,” “Bitiao” refers to pine waves. The wind blowing through the needles of radiata pine and Douglas fir creates a beautiful scene.

The logging area was a bit far, requiring a mountain climb at night, making this task difficult.

However, Wang Bo brought Zhuang Ding and night-combat experts like Little Wang, who could navigate the terrain. Though tiring, they climbed smoothly, reaching the logging area after an hour.
