Fourth Sister glanced at the police car drawing closer and closer and chuckled.

“Sure, big brother. My backpack is heavy as hell. Why don’t you help me carry it?”

“No problem!”

Yellow Teeth grinned and stepped forward to help take the backpack off her shoulders.

Fourth Sister suddenly turned around and threw herself into his arms. Wrapping both arms tightly around him, she immediately shouted:

“Help! Someone’s molesting me! Help!”

Yellow Teeth was completely dumbfounded. He couldn’t understand how this flirtatious little woman had suddenly switched gears.

The police car screeched to a stop, and two officers jumped out.

“What’s going on here?” one tall officer shouted.

Yellow Teeth desperately broke free from Fourth Sister’s embrace and tried to push her away. She, however, clutched tightly at his sleeves while pretending to struggle desperately to escape from his grasp.

The two officers rushed over and pulled them apart. The tall officer quickly pinned Yellow Teeth to the ground.

Meanwhile, Fourth Sister transformed into a weak and helpless woman. Squatting on the ground, she began to cry.

“I was waiting for a ride by the roadside, and this man molested me! Boo hoo…”

“That’s a false accusation, Officer! Wait—”

Yellow Teeth suddenly froze.

“Officer Sun?”

The tall officer heard that the man knew him and took a closer look.

Then he cursed.

“Wang Wenfu, you really never change, do you? Want to spend a few more years behind bars?”

“Chief Sun, I’m really innocent this time!”

“When the hell have you ever said you weren’t innocent?”

Officer Sun twisted Wang Wenfu’s arms behind his back and pressed a knee into his back. Then he looked up at Fourth Sister.

“You’ll need to come with us to the local police station and give a statement.”

“Please don’t,” Wang Wenfu pleaded. “I only came to visit my younger brother. I really didn’t have any bad intentions!”

Fourth Sister knew this incident alone wouldn’t do much to him anyway, and she couldn’t be bothered going to the police station.

Putting on a pitiful expression, she said softly:

“Officers, could you keep an eye on him and only let him go after I’ve left? Otherwise… I’m scared.”

Seeing how frail and vulnerable she appeared, Officer Sun hauled Wang Wenfu to his feet.

“Come on. You can spend the night in our duty room.”

“No! I’ve got to get back!” Wang Wenfu panicked. “I was wrong, okay? I was wrong! But I really didn’t do anything! This little woman set me up! If you lock me up, that’s against the law!”

“Damn it!”

The shorter officer immediately got annoyed.

“You actually know what the law is?”

He shoved Wang Wenfu, nearly knocking him off balance.

Officer Sun then turned to Fourth Sister.

“You should get going. Be careful on the road.”

Watching the police car disappear through the prison gates, she brushed aside the hair the wind had blown across her face.

Little punk. You actually dared to harass me?

She stood by the roadside and smoked another cigarette.

Looking into the distance, she saw dust rising into the air—the county bus was approaching.

She tossed away the cigarette butt and boarded the bus.

That evening, Lin Hao finally saw Fourth Sister again after she had been missing for more than a week.

She looked much the same as always, leaning against the bar counter and occasionally greeting familiar customers.

Yet Lin Hao felt something was different about her.

Her skin seemed a little darker, and there appeared to be a trace of melancholy in her eyes.

While Lin Hao was singing on stage, He Qing arrived.

Second-Floor Office

After listening to her story, He Qing asked: “You don’t want Chen Yu to get out sooner?”

“I do. But I don’t want to spend the rest of my life hiding my identity and living like a hunted stray dog!”

He Qing remained silent.

“Brother, am I right? Isn’t that exactly what he’s planning?”

He Qing nodded.

“Chen Yu has been with me for many years. I know him too well. If he says he wants out, then he’ll find a way out.”

“No!”

Fourth Sister’s answer was firm and decisive.

“Even if it costs me everything. Even if I have to wait another ten or twenty years. I don’t want him taking that risk, and I don’t want us spending our lives hiding and running!”

He Qing silently smoked his cigarette.

“Brother!”

He waved a hand.

“Let me think. Let me think about it.”

Fourth Sister understood immediately.

It seemed He Qing had known about Chen Yu’s plan to escape prison all along. Perhaps the two of them had even planned it together.

After a long silence, He Qing sighed.

“Xiaoyun, I don’t want you living like this forever.”

Fourth Sister shook her head with a bitter smile.

“Brother, what’s so bad about living this way? At least I still have something to look forward to.”

“Once he’s out, the two of you can leave the country.”

“I’m not leaving. This is the place where I was born and raised. I don’t want my future children to become fake foreigners!”

“You?” He Qing looked at her with a mixture of anger and disappointment. “Why are you so stubborn? Enough! Stay out of this. I’ll let him know!”

“Brother, tell him to cooperate with his reform. I’ll keep waiting for him, and I’ll do everything I can to help him get out sooner!”

At the beginning of November, heavy snow filled the skies.

Bai Zhitao left for Yanjing. The finals of the Huaxia University Campus Singer Competition were about to begin, and Wu Xiaozhou went along as her self-appointed guardian.

Wearing a yellow military-style overcoat, Lin Hao walked along the roadside toward Ferry Crossing Bar.

He was planning to return to Chunhe during the upcoming winter vacation. He hadn’t gone home during the summer break, and his father had already called several times asking about it.

He had also brought it up with Fourth Sister twice, but she kept saying she was looking for a replacement. However, she had yet to find anyone suitable.

Lin Hao felt rather helpless. He knew full well she was dragging her feet because she didn’t want to let him leave, but he couldn’t simply abandon the place either. Doing that would be completely unprofessional.

As he neared Ferry Crossing Bar, he vaguely heard a message notification from the phone in his pocket. Taking it out, he saw a bank text informing him that 100,000 yuan had been transferred into his account.

He was stunned for a moment, then smiled.

He knew immediately that it was Han Ying paying him the copyright fees for those two songs.

Before he could put his phone away, it rang. Looking at the number, he saw it was from Yanjing.

“Hello, Lin Hao!” A woman’s voice with a slightly nasal tone came from the other end.

Lin Hao recognized it at once—it was Han Ying.

Jokingly, he said, “How does a big star like you have so much free time?”

Recently, Han Ying’s songs Persistence and Wildflower could often be heard around campus. Music videos had also been produced, and many television channels were airing them. Lin Hao knew she must have signed with a record company.

After Han Ying won the award, he had initially found it strange that not only had she not contacted him, but no one else had approached him to buy songs either.

After all, she had won the Gold Award at the Youth Singing Competition, and his name had been displayed clearly on television. How could nobody come looking for him?

Later, he searched online and discovered that the company that had signed Han Ying was called Meiyin Music Culture Development Co., Ltd. Following various clues on the internet, he found numerous connections between the company and the competition itself.

Once he saw that, everything made sense.

All he could do was shake his head and smile bitterly. Fortunately, he wasn’t in a hurry for money. Otherwise, he might have stormed all the way to Yanjing to demand an explanation.

Han Ying laughed.

“You’re my creditor, after all. I’m just paying back what I owe!”

“I received the text message just now. The money’s arrived. Thank you.”

“Mm. There’s actually something else I’d like to ask of you,” Han Ying said.

Lin Hao could more or less guess what she wanted.

She was probably looking to buy another song. It had been nearly half a year since she won the competition, and she had likely already earned back her investment many times over.

“Go ahead.”

“It’s like this. I need another song, and one of the male singers in our company would also like to buy one.”

“You’re fine. Who’s the male singer?” Lin Hao asked.

“Zhao Yiting, the singer of South Wind.”

Lin Hao was surprised.

Ever since buying a laptop, he had become increasingly familiar with the music industry in this world.

Three years ago, Zhao Yiting had risen to fame with South Wind. However, earlier that spring, allegations surfaced that the title track of his new album had plagiarized a song from Southeast Asia.

Yet Zhao Yiting stubbornly refused to admit it, and his company had continuously defended him.

Lin Hao had listened to both songs online and, from a professional standpoint, had reached a clear conclusion:

It was plagiarism.

“Han Ying, are you buying this new song personally, or is the company buying it?” Lin Hao asked.

“Personally,” Han Ying replied without hesitation.

If she purchased it herself, then after her three-year contract expired, the song’s copyright would still belong to her. She had made this point very clear with Meiyin and had even written it into the contract.

“Good. No problem with your song. I can have it ready for you tomorrow. Since we’re friends, I’ll charge you the friendship price—double the original rate.”

Han Ying was overjoyed.

She had been worried sick, afraid that after her success, Lin Hao would take the opportunity to demand an outrageous price.

To her surprise, he was only doubling the price.

She quickly thanked him, not even stopping to wonder why Lin Hao hadn’t actually stated the exact amount over the phone.

Then Lin Hao continued:

“But Zhao Yiting? No deal.”
