After arriving in Yanjing, Wan Yong first found a place to live in a basement, then began looking everywhere for gigs. More than a month later, just when he was about to run out of money, he finally found a small bar that was willing to pay him 80 yuan a day to sing for an hour and a half.
This price was low even in Yanjing, and even in Xuecheng, the provincial capital of Long Province, it would not be considered much. But in order to survive, he could only grit his teeth and do it.
The bar was not big. They could not afford to hire an entire band and singer, and business was only average, which was why they offered Wan Yong that price.
After he started performing there, because he often sang some of Lin Hao’s songs, the business gradually improved.
The bar owner was fairly reasonable. After a few months, he raised Wan Yong’s pay to 120 yuan.
Chen Chen was a Yanjing native and a second-year student in the piano department of Yanjing Conservatory of Music. Her home was very close to the bar where Wan Yong worked. She and her friends would occasionally go there to hang out, and after a few encounters, Wan Yong became familiar with them.
Wan Yong was extremely clever. He did not pursue the other two girls who were more attractive. Instead, he launched a fierce pursuit of Chen Chen, who was comparatively plain-looking.
He knew his own circumstances very well. If he wanted to establish himself in Yanjing, taking a roundabout route was the fastest shortcut.
He hated Lin Hao. He hated him so much that he gritted his teeth at the thought of him. But he knew very clearly what level Lin Hao’s piano skills were.
Back then, stories about Lin Hao when he switched departments had already spread throughout the art academy. Although many students had scoffed at them, Wan Yong had never doubted them for even a moment.
This time, he wanted to deal with Lin Hao. It was not merely to vent his anger; he also wanted to clear this obstacle for Chen Chen.
Chen Chen came from a very good family. She had started learning piano at the age of five, and the teachers at the conservatory had placed great hopes on her. Therefore, this competition was one she absolutely had to bring home a gold medal from!
But if Lin Hao was there, Wan Yong felt that Chen Chen would have a hard time.
Just now in the theater lobby, he had deliberately gone to look at the announcement board. The first person listed in the first group was Lin Hao.
Although this was not a ranking, after seeing it, he became even more worried.
The two of them walked along the shaded pedestrian path. When they passed an ice cream shop, Chen Chen said she wanted some. Wan Yong said he wanted to smoke a cigarette, so she went inside alone to buy it.
Wan Yong squatted on the curb, thinking. If nothing else worked, should he spend money to find a few people to beat Lin Hao up?
But he was not familiar with anyone in Shanghai either.
Just as he was at a loss, he looked up and spotted a pharmacy by the roadside. An idea suddenly flashed through his mind.
What if he gave Lin Hao some laxatives? Wouldn’t that solve everything?
What a great idea.
Thinking about Lin Hao playing piano on stage while constantly farting, or even possibly having diarrhea right there on stage, he almost wanted to throw his head back and laugh.
But then another thought occurred to him—how could he make Lin Hao eat it? Also, what medicine would actually make him have diarrhea?
He was not a medical student and had no knowledge about this at all.
Through the glass window of the ice cream shop, he saw Chen Chen was still waiting in line. So he stood up and walked toward the pharmacy.
Behind the glass counter stood a female shop owner in a white coat, with short hair and in her thirties. Seeing someone enter, she asked Wan Yong in slightly awkward Mandarin:
“Hello, what medicine do you need?”
“I’ve been having constipation recently. Do you have something that can help with bowel movements?” Wan Yong lied without hesitation.
“You can take some bifidobacterium preparations. They can regulate the balance of intestinal flora, and soon your bowel movements should become normal. If that doesn’t work, you can consider using glycerin suppositories…”
“Is there anything faster?” Wan Yong asked.
The female shop owner thought for a moment.
“Phenolphthalein tablets or magnesium sulfate laxative salts would both work, but you absolutely can’t take too much. They’re very strong.”
Wan Yong was delighted.
“Which one works best?”
“Magnesium sulfate laxative salts work quite quickly.”
“Alright, give me a box!”
“One box is too much. This magnesium sulfate laxative can be bought by the packet. Each packet is 10 grams, and one packet costs 16 yuan and 50 cents!”
“Okay, okay, give me two packets!” After saying that, Wan Yong took out a 100-yuan bill. “Also get me a disposable syringe and needle!”
Wan Yong stuffed the two long, narrow packets of magnesium sulfate laxative and the syringe into his pocket and walked out. Just as he was about to reach the door, he suddenly thought of a question, so he hurriedly turned back and asked, “Um… can this dissolve in water?”
“Yes, magnesium sulfate can dissolve in water!”
“Good, goodbye!”
Wan Yong turned around and left.
The female shop owner felt that Wan Yong’s question was a little strange. She thought about it but couldn’t figure out why, so she just shook her head.
Wan Yong was in an excellent mood. When he returned to where they had been earlier, he saw Chen Chen walking out holding two cone ice creams.
The two of them went to the Old City God Temple Snack Plaza that night and ate a lot of things. Most of the money was spent by Wan Yong. He understood this point very clearly: when a man and a woman are together, a man can’t be stingy and calculative. Otherwise, how could the woman willingly spend big money on him in the future?
When they walked back to the hotel, it was already past nine at night. The two of them then went to a nearby convenience store and bought several bottles of Fruit Orange.
Originally, he wanted to buy mineral water, but he was afraid that the magnesium sulfate laxative might have a color or a strange taste, so he chose Fruit Orange instead. The color of Fruit Orange was strong, and it also contained lots of fruit pulp, so mixing it in should not be noticeable.
After the two of them showered and enjoyed a sweet moment together, they started fooling around. Exhausted, Chen Chen finally fell asleep after eleven.
Wan Yong had something on his mind, so naturally he couldn’t sleep. He waited a while longer, and when he saw that she was deeply asleep, he carefully got out of bed.
In the bathroom, he first poured mineral water into a transparent cup, only filling the bottom of the cup. Then he opened one packet of magnesium sulfate laxative. It was a white powder.
He smelled it. Fortunately, there was no strange odor.
He poured in one packet, and it quickly dissolved. After thinking about it, he worried that one packet might not be effective enough, so he opened another packet and poured it in as well.
After it had completely dissolved, he took over a bottle of Fruit Orange.
He took out the disposable syringe, attached the needle, and pierced the bottle just below the cap. He needed to draw out some of the drink first, otherwise there would be no room for the solution.
When the amount of drink he drew out was about the same as the liquid in the cup, he pulled the syringe out.
He removed the needle, squirted the drink from the syringe into the toilet, then drew all the solution from the cup into the syringe. Finding the tiny hole he had just made, he slowly pushed the liquid back inside.
After finishing, Wan Yong picked up the bottle and shook it several times. For a moment, he felt like he was some kind of secret agent, and couldn’t help but chuckle.
He wrapped the syringe and other things in toilet paper and casually threw them into the trash bin. Then he stood in front of the toilet and urinated before carrying the bottle of Fruit Orange out of the bathroom.
Afraid of mixing it up, he used the light from the television and placed this bottle of Fruit Orange on the windowsill, making sure it was far away from the other three bottles.
Lying on the bed, Wan Yong became troubled again. Everything was ready except the final step—how was he going to make Lin Hao drink it?
This was another problem.
Lin Hao still didn’t know that someone had set their sights on him. That night, he spent a long time admiring the night scenery by the Huangpu River. Although the view now was not as magnificent and beautiful as it had been in his previous life, it had already begun to take shape.
After sighing for quite a while about the flourishing development of the motherland, he walked back along East Nanjing Road. When he reached Jiujiang Road, he saw a Shanghainese-style snack shop, went inside, and had a satisfying meal.
In his previous life, when he was young, he had traveled all over the country for years. His stomach could handle the flavors of food from anywhere.
