When they arrived at Sun Desheng’s home again, Che Qianzi no longer felt as restrained as he had the last time. After dropping them off, Shen La drove away to pick up Miss Zhao.
After Shen La left, Shao Yiyi lightly smacked her husband and said:
“Fatty, next time you’re bringing our little brother and La Zi over for dinner, tell me beforehand. Don’t make them think their sister-in-law is intentionally serving leftovers.”
Sun Desheng grinned and glanced at his wife.
“Next time we’ll eat out and bring Old Huang along. Last time he said you absolutely had to be there whenever we had dinner.”
As he spoke, he suddenly planted a loud kiss on her cheek. Though they had been married for years, with Che Qianzi watching, Shao Yiyi immediately blushed.
“Stop fooling around… your little brother is here. Don’t let him laugh at us.”
She punched him lightly.
“Haha, what’s there to laugh at? He’s our own brother. Seeing his elder brother and sister-in-law being affectionate, he’ll be jealous if anything.”
After laughing for a while, Sun Desheng suddenly changed the subject and said to his wife:
“There’s something I need to tell you. Well… I quit. I quit the Bureau. I’m no longer Director, no longer an investigator. I resigned.”
Hearing those last words, Shao Yiyi froze for a moment. Then she smiled and lightly patted his face.
“Then don’t do it anymore. Xiao Wu has grown up anyway. We’ve always talked about taking a family trip, but you kept saying you didn’t have time. Great! I’ll book the tickets later. The three of us can travel around the world. That’s wonderful news.”
Watching the couple flirt, Che Qianzi felt somewhat awkward. He coughed and said:
“How about I take Xiao Wu out for a walk? You two can enjoy yourselves for a while. Just call me when you’re done…”
“Pah! What kind of little brother talks about his elder brother and sister-in-law like that?”
Shao Yiyi laughed and smacked him.
Although they had only met once before, she already treated him like family. Calling over her daughter, she said:
“Xiao Wu, help Mommy clean up. Wash your hands, it’s time to eat.”
After bustling around in the kitchen, Shao Yiyi brought out all the dishes from the previous evening and placed them back on the table.
Seeing that enormous fish head and smelling the strong aroma of alcohol, Che Qianzi’s head began to ache again. He even considered taking a couple of antibiotic pills later—perhaps then he could avoid eating it.
Sun Desheng had just brought out two bottles of Moutai when someone knocked on the door.
They assumed Shen La had returned with his girlfriend.
Unexpectedly, when Shao Yiyi opened the door, she found Yang Shuji from the Bureau standing outside.
He was carrying two bottles of Xifeng liquor and an old-fashioned box of Daoxiangcun pastries.
Seeing him, Shao Yiyi said in surprise:
“A rare guest! Since having a child, this is the first time you’ve come over. Fatty! Yang Shuji’s here, come greet him.”
“Yang Shuji from the neighborhood committee? Here for the census? Perfect, I need my household registration changed to unemployed—”
Sun Desheng came out in slippers and immediately burst out laughing when he saw who it was.
“Oh my, it’s this Yang Shuji. Wife, you’re right, he really is a rare visitor. Brother, no need to add another pair of chopsticks. He’ll leave after dropping off the gifts.”
At this moment, Che Qianzi also walked over. Seeing the oil-paper-wrapped pastry box, he remarked:
“That pastry box has some age on it. Even back in our Northeast hometown, you can’t find these anymore. Director Yang, did your father buy this for your mother when he was courting her? Bringing it out now is rather unfilial…”
Shao Yiyi hurriedly pulled him away.
“It’s not like I gave it to his mother!”
Under such circumstances, Che Qianzi naturally couldn’t say anything pleasant.
Fortunately, Yang Shuji had excellent self-control. Pretending not to hear the brothers’ remarks, he forced a smile and said:
“I happened to be passing by nearby. I saw some old pastries and thought your child might enjoy them, so I bought a few pieces… Where’s Little Six? Let Uncle hold him.”
“We have Xiao Wu. Little Six is the Young Marshal.”
Sun Desheng smilingly accepted the pastries and liquor.
“On behalf of our Young Marshal, thanks, Director Yang. It’s getting late, and you’re busy, so I won’t keep—”
Halfway through his sentence, the elevator across the hall opened.
Shen La had arrived with his girlfriend, Zhao Qing.
After greeting Yang Shuji, Shen La entered the apartment with Zhao Qing.
Yang Shuji was quite shameless when necessary. Taking advantage of Shen La’s arrival, he slipped inside as well and changed into house slippers.
Shao Yiyi gave her husband a helpless smile and went to fetch another set of dishes and chopsticks for him.
“Don’t trouble yourself, Sister-in-law. We’re all family here today. There’s enough food.”
Yang Shuji awkwardly exchanged a few pleasantries. Seeing nobody paid him any attention, he continued as though speaking to himself:
“This time, we really owe Brother Desheng. Following the clues you provided, we just captured those six living corpses at the airport.
Now only Sun Biyun remains.
There are thirty-nine women named Sun Biyun among Beijing’s native residents alone, not counting those from other provinces. We’re checking them one by one. We should have results within a day or two…”
Just as Yang Shuji was discussing Sun Biyun, in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Tianjin, a man in his forties was speaking to the man sitting opposite him:
“So it really failed? Brother Long, with your abilities, you personally went to the airport to send them off. How could it suddenly go wrong? Damn it… this is bad. They won’t trace it back to me, right? Everything was done through single-line contact…”
The man opposite him sighed dramatically.
“Didn’t it really fail? If I hadn’t sensed something wrong and escaped quickly, I’d already be in the Bureau’s hands together with those six living corpses. I think you’d better run too. Oh, before you leave, let’s settle the remaining payment.”
“The Bureau bastards can just wait…”
The man gnashed his teeth viciously.
“Once I get the chance, I, Sun Biyun, will kill them all. Brother Long, I know I can’t afford to provoke people like Shen La or Sun Desheng. But I can still kill some small fry. I heard Sun Desheng recently has his younger brother with him—the illegitimate son of the same father. One’s surnamed Sun and the other’s surnamed Che. How about this? Help me one more time. Kill that Che fellow.”
Hearing Sun Biyun ask him to eliminate Che Qianzi, the man sitting opposite fell silent for a moment.
Then he shook his head with a bitter smile.
“Let’s talk about that later. First, settle the balance.”
Sun Biyun sighed.
“Brother Long, money’s tight right now. How about this—you kill that kid surnamed Che, and even if I have to sell everything I own, I’ll pay you.”
The man known as Brother Long smiled faintly.
Raising his hand, he pointed at Sun Biyun and said:
“I don’t want the money anymore.
And there’s one more thing I need to tell you.
My surname isn’t Long.
My surname is Kong.
The same Kong as Kong Dalong, Che Qianzi’s old master’s surname.”
The instant he finished speaking, a bloody hole appeared in Sun Biyun’s forehead.
Red and white matter spilled all over the floor…
