Sun Fatty ignored Che Qianzi’s curses.
With a grin, he pulled a stack of documents from his briefcase. After finding a few sheets, he continued:
“Your household registration was processed eighteen years ago by the Zhengdong Township Police Station in He’an County, Liaodong.
The parents’ section was left blank. Your guardian was listed as a Taoist named Kong Dalong.
There was also an attached note stating that Kong Dalong had found you as an abandoned infant at the entrance of the Taoist temple.”
At this point, Sun Fatty took the cigarette butt from Che Qianzi’s mouth and lit another one for himself.
After taking a puff, he continued:
“Because of that, I personally made a trip to your hometown.
I interviewed the neighbors around your temple and questioned nearly every elderly person in the area.
But not a single one could clearly explain how you ended up at the Taizhen Temple.
As for your origins, Kong Dalong told a different story every time.
Besides the abandoned-baby story he told the police, he told the woman who ran the convenience store next door that you were his younger brother—the late-born child of his elderly parents. They couldn’t afford to raise you, so they handed you over to him.
He told the village women’s director that he rescued you from child traffickers.
He told the village chief’s wife that you were his cultivated Nascent Soul.”
After saying this, Sun Fatty closed the file and smiled at the motionless Che Qianzi.
“I’m telling you, your master was quite a character.
He got along extremely well with the women in the village.
Back then, he didn’t actually qualify to adopt or become a legal guardian.
But every woman in the village came forward to testify on his behalf, and that’s how he was allowed to raise you.”
“When you were three years old, someone invited Kong Dalong to perform an exorcism.
You were too young to leave behind, so he brought you along.
According to the people involved, the exorcism had already turned into a disaster.
Kong Dalong got pinned to the ground by a woman possessed by a fox spirit and was getting slapped across the face.
He cried and screamed so loudly that it frightened you in the next room.
At that time, three-year-old you also started crying.
Unexpectedly, your crying scared the fox spirit right out of the woman.
That was when Kong Dalong realized you were something special.”
“After discovering this ability, he took you everywhere to deal with demons and spirits.
Whenever you made a move, whether it was a demon or a ghost, it would immediately flee in terror.
Before that, your master’s life had been quite difficult.
After earning money through your abilities, things finally improved.”
However, about ten years ago, for some unknown reason, you and your master suddenly reduced the number of exorcism jobs you took on.
Even though you worked less, you somehow became even less worried about money.
Every month or two, Kong Dalong would receive a substantial wire transfer.
And it was around that time that he developed his gambling habit.
Still, no matter how much he lost, someone always covered the hole.
That continued until about six months ago.
The previously reliable transfers suddenly stopped.
At the same time, your master’s gambling grew more serious.
He began borrowing money everywhere.
And in the end, that debt landed in my lap.”
Although Che Qianzi couldn’t speak, he was stunned.
Much of what Sun Fatty had said was completely new to him.
Now that the old Taoist had run away, where had this fat man learned all of this?
Sun Desheng seemed to read his thoughts.
Chuckling, he said:
“Looks like there are quite a few things even you didn’t know.
Then let me continue.
Your background still isn’t completely clear.
But after all these years, I did figure out who was sending money to you and your master.”
As he spoke, he pulled another thick stack of bank transfer receipts from his briefcase.
After showing the amounts to Che Qianzi, he continued:
“A total of one hundred and thirty-three transfers.
The total amount comes to 7.13 million yuan.
That averages out to more than seven hundred thousand yuan a year.
For the first two or three years, the sender was Wang Lu, former Director Gao Liang’s secretary.
Every transfer was routed through companies connected to the Bureau.
No wonder the accounting department never found anything during audits.”
But seven or eight years ago, after Boss Gao passed away, the payments began coming from a trading company in Hong Kong.
I happen to know the company’s owner, Boss Ma.
I went and asked him personally.
Before his death, Boss Gao specifically instructed him to continue supporting you and your master financially.
He said that one day the two of you would help him survive a great calamity.”
“Unfortunately, Boss Ma was too shortsighted.
He paid for seven years without seeing any return.
So he made the decision himself and stopped sending money.
Still, bad things can become good things.
Otherwise, you and I might never have met.”
Having finally said everything he wanted to say, Sun Fatty let out a long breath.
He drank some water and rested briefly before continuing:
“I’ve told you everything I can.
That should count as sincerity, right?
To be honest, after I took over as Director of the Bureau from Boss Gao, I should’ve been responsible for looking after you and your master for the rest of your lives.
But as you’ve seen, I’ve just been stripped of my position.
My heart is willing, but my power isn’t.”
He deliberately sighed dramatically before continuing:
“Still, I couldn’t just stand by and watch you fall into ruin.
At first I wanted to hire you as my personal assistant.
But all the savings I’d accumulated went toward paying off the debts you and your master left behind.
I really don’t have any spare money now.”
“Fortunately, I still have a little influence in the Bureau.
I called in a few favors and managed to get you a position as an Investigator.
Once you’ve recovered, the two of us can earn our meals from the same pot.”
“Don’t underestimate the position.
You’ll have enough to eat.
Any money left over can go toward paying my interest.”
“No rush.
Pay back whatever you can.
If you can’t pay the interest, we’ll just add it to the principal and calculate a new round of interest.”
As he spoke, he pulled out another contract from his briefcase.
Just like before, he pressed Che Qianzi’s fingerprints onto it and then signed Che Qianzi’s name himself.
Che Qianzi was so angry his eyes nearly rolled back.
If he had been able to move, he would have fought Sun Fatty right then and there.
Instead, he could only watch helplessly as this absurd contract became attached to his name.
At the rate compound interest was being calculated, in just a few years the debt would exceed one hundred million yuan.
Just as Sun Fatty finished with the contract, the ward door opened.
Another white-haired man walked in.
Unlike Lazi or Wu Rendi, this man looked entirely different.
He had a baby-faced appearance that made it impossible to guess his true age.
His expressions and movements were somewhat shy and reserved, making him seem like a recent college graduate who hadn’t yet experienced much of the world.
Seeing him enter, Sun Fatty greeted him.
“Old Yang, Lazi said you were looking for me.
Couldn’t this have waited until we got back?
You actually came all the way to the hospital.”
The baby-faced man smiled shyly.
“And what about you, Great Sage?
You’ve stopped caring about Bureau affairs and are hiding here whispering secrets to this little Taoist.”
Sun Fatty laughed.
“I’m just an Investigator in Division Two now.
The Bureau’s business belongs to Secretary Yang.
When did it ever become my responsibility?”
“Just say it. What do you need my help with?”
Old Yang glanced at Che Qianzi lying in bed.
After a moment’s hesitation, he finally said:
“I received some information.
Someone spotted the Guangyuan Underworld Mirror at the Ghost Market in Jiuhe.
I need that item.”
Sun Fatty immediately understood.
Smiling, he nodded.
“Then tell Secretary Yang.
You two and Big Yang are practically wearing the same pair of pants these days.
I’m telling you, the three Yangs have become one.”
“Just ask, and Secretary Yang will give you whatever you want.”
Old Yang showed no embarrassment at all.
He simply smiled and replied:
“The three of us together are still just three sheep. Even combined, we can’t outscheme you, Sun the Great Sage.”
“Are you really going to claim that Yang Jun wasn’t deliberately placed beside Secretary Yang by you?”
“I see through it—I just don’t say anything.”
“The wind that blows through the Bureau is blown there by you.”
“To be honest, I’m not the only one interested in the Guangyuan Underworld Mirror.
“Ouyang Pianzuo has already headed for Jiuhe.”
“The Ghost Market there runs deep.”
“Let’s hope he doesn’t drown in it.”
