Seeing that Wan Changluo had gone after Huang Ran, Che Qianzi pointed at the open stone gate and shouted to Sun Desheng:
“Fatty, the door’s still open. Let’s get out while we have the chance!”
Sun Desheng let out a bitter laugh.
“Silly brother, do you really think Wan Changluo would leave us such an obvious escape route?”
As he spoke, he fired a shot at the ground outside the stone gate. Dozens of pellets struck the floor, and Che Qianzi suddenly saw the scenery beyond the gate distort for an instant.
Che Qianzi was no longer the country Taoist boy from Northeast China. In the past few days, he had seen plenty of strange things and immediately realized that Wan Changluo had tampered with the area outside. Most likely, some kind of formation had been set up there. Stepping outside now would almost certainly mean death.
Since there was no way out, they could only fight to the death.
Che Qianzi said to Sun Desheng,
“Fatty, while that old bastard is chasing Huang Ran, sneak up behind him and shoot him. I don’t believe he’s got eyes in the back of his head.”
“Let Huang Ran handle it. Since he figured out what magical weapon Wan Changluo carries, he must have prepared something to counter it.”
Sun Desheng suddenly smiled strangely and added:
“If we go after him now and miss with a shot, we’d only be drawing the trouble we just dumped onto Huang Ran back onto ourselves.”
While the two brothers were talking, Huang Ran’s speed slowed noticeably.
After being chased by Han Bing earlier, the nearly three-hundred-pound man was already exhausted. After only a few more steps, his legs gave out.
Bang!
He stumbled and fell onto the golden platform.
Before he could get back up, Wan Changluo had already appeared before him.
With a slight movement of his finger, Huang Ran felt a cold sensation lightly brush against his neck. He knew that with only half a pound more force, his head would be severed.
Huang Ran hurriedly shouted:
“Don’t you want the Hehuan Gu? I’ll trade it for my life!”
Without waiting for Wan Changluo’s answer, he removed his backpack and dumped out its contents.
Although the bag wasn’t large, it contained many things. After rummaging through it, Huang Ran produced a bamboo tube.
“The Hehuan Gu repels metal, so I prepared a container made from ten-thousand-year bamboo.”
He held the tube out with both hands.
“The Hehuan Gu is inside. Open it and you’ll see. I’ve handed over the treasure—hopefully, Chairman Wan will keep his word.”
Seeing Huang Ran surrender the bamboo tube so readily, Wan Changluo was somewhat surprised.
Though the Hehuan Gu was right before him, he did not reach out immediately. After a moment of hesitation, he said:
“You open it. Pour the sacred object out so I can see it.”
Hearing this, Huang Ran’s expression became conflicted.
Still, he obeyed and reluctantly removed the stopper.
As Wan Changluo stretched his neck to peer inside—
Huang Ran suddenly raised the tube and splashed its contents directly onto Wan Changluo’s left hand!
Caught off guard, Wan Changluo hurriedly raised his arm to block.
Taking advantage of that instant, Huang Ran ducked his head and slipped free from the invisible weapon around his neck, then leaped over the golden platform and sprinted toward Sun Desheng and Che Qianzi with all his might.
Furious at being splashed, Wan Changluo lashed out with his left hand.
The invisible whip shot toward Huang Ran’s neck—
Then Wan Changluo suddenly realized something.
The whip, which should have remained invisible, had become visible.
The liquid Huang Ran had splashed wasn’t ordinary water.
He had been tricked!
His greatest advantage had always been the whip’s invisibility. Now that its shape was exposed, its power was greatly reduced.
Still relying on his profound cultivation, Wan Changluo continued his attack.
Just then, Meng Qiqi had picked up one of the foreigners’ guns. She chambered a round and fired a burst at his back.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
Hearing the sound of the bolt, Wan Changluo noticed her from the corner of his eye.
He immediately turned around and traced a circle with his hand.
Sparks flew.
Every bullet in the burst was sliced in half by the whip.
Although Meng Qiqi failed to kill him, she had bought Huang Ran enough time to escape.
Seeing that the attack was ineffective, she threw away the gun and retreated quickly.
“You think that’s all I’m capable of?”
Wan Changluo sneered.
Reaching into his clothes, he pulled out a black object and hurled it toward Huang Ran.
By then, Huang Ran had widened the distance. Seeing something flying toward him, he quickly ducked behind a coffin.
He heard no impact.
Curious, he poked his head out—
And from the other side of the coffin, a pitch-black spider crawled over and lunged at him.
Huang Ran recognized it as one of the Five Venoms and dared not touch it. He immediately ran around the coffin.
The spider suddenly flew.
Earlier, it had spun a transparent strand of silk attached to the coffin. Suspended by the thread, it swung through the air toward Huang Ran’s back.
Huang Ran had never expected an aerial attack.
By the time he noticed, the spider had already landed on his neck and bitten into the fleshy part behind it.
He didn’t even have time to groan.
Still running, he suddenly collapsed.
His head slammed heavily against the golden platform.
Whether it was the poison or the impact, no one could tell.
In any case, after falling, Huang Ran did not get up again.
Seeing him collapse, Meng Qiqi panicked and rushed over to save him.
But Che Qianzi grabbed her.
“Girl, are you trying to get yourself killed? Didn’t you see how Huang Fatty went down? You don’t want Zhang Stutterer anymore? Planning to be buried together with Huang Fatty? Save that for your next life!”
No one had ever spoken so sarcastically to Meng Qiqi before.
Enraged and forgetting the circumstances, she slapped him across the face.
Smack!
Even from afar, Sun Desheng winced on behalf of his brother.
“Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! If I hit women, I’d throw you into a coffin and bury you right now!”
Though his hair practically stood on end from anger, Che Qianzi still didn’t hit her back.
He shoved her aside and turned around.
Taking the short sword he had borrowed from Sun Desheng, he rubbed it against the ground.
Only then did Meng Qiqi notice the circle of yellow sulfur powder around his feet. Inside the circle, the centipede lay motionless, as if dead.
Che Qianzi had already smeared human blood on the sword tip earlier. Now he coated it with the sulfur powder.
With a flick of his wrist, the sword flew toward the spider.
Though it failed to kill the Hehuan spider, sulfur restrained the Five Venoms. Sensing the powder, the creature quickly retreated.
Only then did Meng Qiqi rush over and support Huang Ran.
His face had turned ashen, and he no longer showed any sign of life.
Believing he was dead, she lost all restraint.
Determined to avenge him, she drew a dagger from her waist and charged toward the sneering Wan Changluo.
Though not equal to the previous sect masters, Wan Changluo had trained in the occult arts since childhood.
Seeing Meng Qiqi charging at him, he snorted coldly and spat out a cloud of black gas.
The black mist instantly expanded to cover two or three meters in front of him.
Without hesitation, Meng Qiqi rushed straight into it.
Although she emerged from the other side moments later, all the strength seemed to have been drained from her body.
Still clutching her dagger, she staggered to within arm’s reach of Wan Changluo.
The tip of the blade had already touched him—
But she collapsed to the ground before she could strike.
