Both men had exhausted their ammunition, yet giant spiders continued to surge up from the hole beneath the coffin and the openings in the floor, lunging at them.
Although Che Qianzi had plenty of experience fighting, this was his first encounter with demonic beasts like these. His usual tricks—gouging eyes, choking throats, kicking groins—were useless here. Even the young Taoist, who was normally as ferocious as a mad dog, began to panic.
Drawing his short sword, he wildly slashed at the spiders that pounced on him. He wanted to call Sun Desheng over for help, but from the corner of his eye, he saw that the fat man had already been pinned to the ground by three or four giant spiders.
At that moment, the sensation of impending death washed over him.
His body began trembling uncontrollably, and his movements slowed. One of the spiders dodged his sword and rammed into him, knocking him flat on the ground. The short sword slipped from his hand and clattered away.
Seeing an opportunity, the spider opened its jaws and went straight for his throat.
Just as it was about to bite down, Che Qianzi suddenly thrust his hand into the monster’s mouth. His other hand clamped down on the top of its head like a steel vise.
With a violent pull—
He ripped out the creature’s windpipe together with its internal organs.
The hollowed-out spider twitched on the ground for a few moments before becoming completely still.
When the other spiders saw their companion disemboweled, they immediately retreated.
It was as though they sensed some change that had occurred within Che Qianzi. Not one of them dared approach him again.
Several spiders fled out of the burial chamber. As soon as they came into contact with the death energy and swamp gas outside, they quickly dropped dead.
They would rather poison themselves than go anywhere near the young Taoist.
At that moment, several shotgun blasts rang out from Sun Desheng’s direction.
Boom! Boom!
The spiders pinning him down were blown apart. Covered in wounds, Sun Desheng struggled to his feet with his shotgun in hand.
As he blasted the spiders charging at him, he limped toward Che Qianzi.
The moment Sun Desheng reached his side, the spiders retreated once more.
Unable to approach the young Taoist, they could only scurry wildly around the chamber.
Seeing the advantage, Sun Desheng shouted, “Brother, block the hole in the ground! Don’t let these spider bastards escape! Which ones bit me just now? None of them are getting away!”
Earlier, while being pinned down, Sun Desheng had protected his vital areas at the cost of countless wounds. At the same time, he had managed to retrieve his shotgun and reload it at top speed before shooting his way out.
Seeing that the spiders feared Che Qianzi, he had immediately run over to seek refuge beside him.
The suggestion made sense.
Like a completely different person, Che Qianzi leaped forward and stood beside the opening.
The spiders that had intended to escape through it immediately backed away, not daring to get close.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Sun Desheng shot several more spiders before rushing back to the coffin.
He activated the mechanism again, causing the coffin bottom to slide shut and seal the passage beneath.
After confirming that the opening was blocked, he used his shotgun to clear a path and returned to Che Qianzi.
“Brother, you won’t be using these spare shells. Let your big brother keep them for self-defense.”
As he spoke, Sun Desheng removed the spare drum magazines hanging from Che Qianzi’s waist and used them to replenish his own nearly empty weapon.
Che Qianzi didn’t object.
He merely sighed softly and said slowly, “Did you really have to bring me out? Over the years, I hardly ever appear. Yet in just a few days, I’ve already come out three times. Fatty, this was your doing again, wasn’t it?”
The Che Qianzi standing before him was polite and composed.
This was his second personality.
Completely different from the mad-dog primary personality, he spoke in a calm and measured manner.
But when it came to killing, he showed absolutely no mercy.
As he spoke, he charged straight into the swarm of spiders.
Reaching the largest one, he smashed its skull with a single punch and casually stirred around inside.
The giant spider instantly collapsed, dead.
Then he rushed toward a second spider.
This time, he tore open its abdomen and dumped its organs onto the floor in bloody clumps.
None of the remaining spiders had any thoughts of avenging their companions.
Terrified, they scattered in all directions, afraid that if they ran too slowly, Che Qianzi would catch them and treat them the same way.
Thus, the situation was completely reversed.
Now it was Che Qianzi who was chasing the spiders all around the burial chamber.
Seeing this, Sun Desheng calmly shot down any spiders that came near him.
To conserve ammunition, however, he left most of them to Che Qianzi.
The young Taoist’s attacks were swift and efficient.
Within a few minutes, there wasn’t a single living spider left in the chamber.
Only then did Sun Desheng collapse onto the floor as though all his strength had been drained.
Grinning bitterly, he said, “Brother, I owe this one to you… Don’t look at me like that. I really didn’t plan any of this. Just look at all these bite marks. Every one of them is bleeding. Anyone who knows me would know I got bitten by monsters. Anyone who doesn’t might think I tattooed nine dragons hauling a coffin all over my body.”
Che Qianzi remained silent, staring expressionlessly at the fat man.
Only after Sun Desheng had finished speaking did he finally say, “I don’t care whether you’re telling the truth or not. Just remember one thing—don’t involve me in anything this dangerous again. Stop testing me. If something goes wrong one day, this life of mine isn’t something you can afford to compensate for.”
“I already told you, this time it had nothing to do with me. I nearly got carried off by those spiders myself.”
Sun Desheng forced a smile.
Just then, a hissing sound came from his body.
Hiss… hiss…
Looking down, he discovered that both oxygen cylinders had been punctured and were leaking.
One had already run completely empty.
The other only had seven or eight minutes of oxygen remaining.
“We’re finished. The oxygen’s all leaked out. We can’t even go back now.”
With a miserable expression, he tossed the empty tank aside and said, “Brother, your big brother’s trapped now. No matter which personality you are, you’re still Che Qianzi, right? You can’t just watch me die. How about this—don’t go back just yet. Help me out. Once we deal with everything here, you can rest afterward.”
“You think I can come and go whenever I want?”
Che Qianzi shook his head in frustration.
“The longer I stay out, the greater the damage to the body. The longer I’ll need to recover afterward. I’m about to return now. Don’t expect me to come out again for the rest of the journey…”
“Fatty, you know my origins. Don’t let anything happen to me. It won’t be good for anyone.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the second personality suddenly rolled his eyes upward and collapsed unconscious.
Sun Desheng hurried over and supported him.
After calling out repeatedly, the young Taoist finally opened his eyes.
He blankly glanced at Sun Desheng and then at the surrounding scene.
Only then did he ask, “What happened…? Why are all the spiders dead?”
“Fatty, did we die together with them? Damn it… Why did I end up dying with you? I knew swearing brotherhood was a bad idea. We actually died on the same year, same month, same day. Sun Fatty, you really took advantage of me!”
“Brother, we’re both alive and kicking. Don’t you remember? Think carefully.”
Sun Desheng chuckled and wiped the wounds left by the spiders’ fangs on his face.
“Just now, your big brother here displayed unparalleled might. I herded all those land crabs together and personally killed every last one of them.”
“But since the land crabs are practically extinct now, we still need to keep moving downward. There’s no turning back anymore.”
“Huang Ran and the others were probably trapped below because of those things. If we can find him, maybe we’ll find another way back up.”
As he spoke, Sun Desheng reopened the mechanism inside the coffin.
Then he pulled out a cold flare from his backpack and tossed it into the dark hole below…
