After arriving at the airport, Che Qianzi had his eyes opened once again. The secretary led them directly to the private jet area. Seven or eight medium-sized private aircraft were parked there, all looking quite similar. Apparently, rich people had more or less the same taste.

“Chairman Ma flew to Guangdong on a commercial flight,” the secretary explained proudly as she pointed at the aircraft in front of them. “He specifically left his private plane behind to receive everyone. This is a Gulfstream G550 business jet, the same model used by Wanda Wang and Hangzhou Ma. It represents Chairman Ma’s sincerity.”

“How embarrassing. Old Ma is too polite!” Sun Desheng laughed loudly as he looked at the plane.

“How can I accept such a huge gift? Tell Old Ma that just this once is enough. No more in the future. After we get back, we’ll handle the transfer procedures. Oh, and ask him to pay the deed tax too.”

“No… no… that’s not what I meant… Chairman Ma isn’t giving you the plane…”

The secretary immediately panicked. Seeing how shameless Sun Desheng was, she feared he might actually use her slip of the tongue to extort the aircraft. Sweat instantly appeared on her forehead.

Even Che Qianzi felt Sun Desheng had gone too far. Looking at the secretary, who was on the verge of tears, he said:

“Fatty, that’s enough. It’s not like you know how to fly one anyway. Owning this thing would just be troublesome. You’d have to hire…”

He struggled to remember the word pilot.

“…a driver who drives airplanes. You’d have to pay him five thousand a month, right? If you hire two drivers to take turns, that’s ten thousand.”

Originally, Yang Xiao had intended to persuade Sun Desheng too, but after hearing Che Qianzi’s words, he burst out laughing so hard that he nearly doubled over.

Watching the flustered secretary and the laughing Yang Xiao, Sun Desheng grinned.

“Relax, little sister. I’m just joking. Remember, in my eyes, giving me the plane would count as sincerity. Everything else doesn’t.”

With that, Fatty Sun boarded the aircraft first.

Once aboard, Che Qianzi was stunned by the luxurious interior.

Two rows of leather sofas and gold decorations filled the cabin. Compared with the purely functional aircraft used by the Bureau, the difference in class was worlds apart.

Ever since coming to Beijing, the most luxurious place Che Qianzi had seen was the ICU ward—after all, the emergency equipment there cost millions. He had never seen a private jet this extravagant.

Without waiting for the secretary to invite him, he wandered around the cabin. Opening one of the inner rooms, he discovered a luxurious bedroom complete with its own bathroom and shower.

He wanted to inspect it more closely, but was told that the plane was about to take off. Reluctantly, he sat down on a sofa and fastened his seatbelt.

Sun Desheng smiled.

“Brother, you like this kind of style too? Just wait until your big brother gets his position back. Then we’ll upgrade the Bureau’s planes too…”

Before he could continue, Yang Xiao interrupted:

“Dasheng, Yang Shuji’s position is pretty secure now. While you were in America, he bribed and persuaded everyone above and below him. From the leaders in Beijing and Director Wu, all the way down to the directors and investigators. To be honest, he even promised my wife a spot at Zhongdian Middle School.”

Yang Xiao smiled sheepishly.

“You know me. If it only concerned me, I’d never side with Yang Shuji. But this involves my wife. Besides, even Director Wu has been won over. Right now, aside from Shen La and this little brother of yours, nobody really listens to you anymore. Why don’t you just ask the people from Dark Night? It wouldn’t cost much.”

Sun Desheng chuckled.

“I’m not willing to get rid of Yang Shuji. He’s the lightning rod taking all the heat for me. Once he’s gone, who’ll receive the ministry inspectors next time? But speaking of which, Old Yang, how exactly did Yang Shuji convince Director Wu?”

Yang Xiao shook his head.

“How would I know? I’m curious too. Right now, Yang Shuji and Director Wu seem to be closer than anyone else in the Bureau.”

By then, the plane had taken off.

After reaching cruising altitude, the secretary brought over snacks and champagne.

Hearing that a tiny spoonful of caviar cost over a thousand yuan, both Sun Desheng and Yang Xiao declined. Che Qianzi, however, grabbed all three portions and stuffed them into his mouth.

The moment he bit down, his expression twisted.

Sun Desheng hurriedly poured him a glass of champagne so he could wash it down.

“Fishy… fishy enough to hit my brain…”

After recovering, Che Qianzi asked:

“This one bite costs over a thousand? Rich people really enjoy paying money to torture themselves?”

Sun Desheng laughed.

“That’s because Europeans became wealthy first, so everyone followed their lifestyle. If Northeastern Chinese had gotten rich first, then the snacks on planes would be raw vegetables with soybean paste and braised pork bones.”

He was just about to say more when his phone rang.

The information and photographs he had requested earlier had arrived.

Che Qianzi became curious again.

“Fatty, how can your phone still receive messages while we’re flying?”

Seeing his curiosity, Yang Xiao explained:

“Little brother, private jets like this have Wi-Fi. Now do you understand one of the advantages of being rich?”

Before Che Qianzi could answer, Sun Desheng smiled.

“Old Yang, we’ve run into some old acquaintances.”

He handed over his phone.

“Looks like the resort business isn’t simple. Old Huang’s people are already involved. Miss Meng and Stuttering Zhang have arrived. The water here runs deep. Either it’s really that Lu Ruji you mentioned—or something even bigger.”

Che Qianzi leaned over and saw a picture of a man and woman apparently arguing. The man seemed to be explaining something, while the woman looked at him with utter disdain.

Yang Xiao explained:

“These two are acquaintances of your brother. The man is Zhang Zhiyan, and the woman is Meng Qiqi. They’ve both dealt with your brother before. There’s also a man named Huang Ran. That man is extraordinary. Even Gao Liang thought highly of him. Back in the day, he almost overturned the entire Bureau all by himself.”

Sun Desheng laughed.

“Nothing that serious. Aren’t we all buddies now? Last time when La Zi and I got drunk, he almost came to join us.”

Taking back the phone, he continued:

“These two checked into the resort as tourists an hour ago. My friend has some connections and got access to the booking records. Old friend Huang Ran also booked a room, but something seems to have delayed him. He hasn’t arrived yet.”

Yang Xiao poured himself a glass of champagne and took a sip.

“Huang Ran hasn’t personally acted in many years. Whenever he sets his eyes on something, it’s never a small matter. Dasheng, in theory he’s still an enemy of the Bureau. Prepare in advance. Call Shen La over. If things turn ugly, at least we won’t suffer.”

Sun Desheng grinned.

“Didn’t I say we’re all good brothers now? Why would we fight? Besides, these past few years, Old Huang has always paid whenever we eat together. You’ve eaten his meals too. It’s hard to bite the hand that feeds you.”

He then dialed a number.

“Hello… La Zi? It’s me…”

“The signal on the plane isn’t very good. Listen, come to Guangdong…”

“I’ll send you the address later…”

“You already accepted another job and can’t come?”

“Then who’s left in Sixth Office?”

“Forget it…”

“Tell Director Xiao from Fifth Office that I need two sets of Class-A equipment…”

“Send them over by plane after I give you the address…”

“It’s nothing…”

“Yeah…”

“Huang Ran has arrived.”
