Seeing that Che Qianzi had actually caught his sword shadow with his bare hand, Cui Yuandao was greatly alarmed. When he saw the young Taoist throw the sword shadow back at him, he dared not imitate Che Qianzi and catch it himself. He hurriedly ducked and avoided it. The sword shadow struck the wall behind him, and with a loud explosion blasted a hole nearly one meter wide through the stone.
No sooner had Cui Yuandao avoided his own attack than a figure flashed before him. Che Qianzi had already appeared in front of him.
The young Taoist threw a punch straight at his face.
Still shaken from dodging the sword shadow and unable to gauge the extent of Che Qianzi’s abilities, Cui Yuandao did not dare receive the blow head-on and quickly moved aside.
But Che Qianzi had apparently anticipated his movement.
As the old Taoist dodged, Che Qianzi’s other hand followed his path and instantly seized him by the throat.
At the same time, he lifted his leg and kicked him square in the groin.
Watching this last attack from the rear, Sun Desheng chuckled and muttered to himself, “Still attacking below the belt. That’s exactly my style. Boss Gao was right—this kid really is a treasure…”
As Fatty Sun laughed to himself, Cui Yuandao let out a miserable scream.
His legs clamped together involuntarily and his whole body trembled.
He couldn’t understand it.
He had only borrowed a corpse to revive himself. He shouldn’t even feel pain.
Why, then, did that kick hurt so realistically?
He hadn’t suffered such misery while alive, yet several hundred years after death, he finally got to experience it.
“Sorry, that hurt, didn’t it? I’ll try to be gentler…”
Seeing his reaction, Che Qianzi smiled slightly and slapped him across the face.
Crack!
The blow collapsed his cheekbone and flattened half his face.
Wasn’t he supposed to go easy? Where was the gentle part?
Ignoring the pain in his face, Cui Yuandao gathered all his power and suddenly spat a ball of red light from his mouth.
It struck Che Qianzi square in the face.
This was one of Cui Yuandao’s ultimate life-saving techniques.
The attack forced Che Qianzi back several steps and loosened his grip on the old Taoist’s neck.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Cui Yuandao retreated to the coffin in the center of the chamber.
With a wave of his hand, he flipped open his wife’s coffin lid and retrieved a shining longsword from beside her skeleton.
This sword had been the magical weapon that made his name famous.
It was because of this weapon that he had once dared entertain thoughts of challenging the Heavenly Tribulation.
Unfortunately, his cultivation had been nowhere near sufficient to attract the tribulation. Before his death, he finally realized that his ambition had merely been ignorance and arrogance, so he buried the sword together with his wife.
Who would have thought that even after death, he would once again have to rely on it?
With a sigh, Cui Yuandao unleashed his life’s mastery of sword control.
The flying sword shot toward Che Qianzi.
By now, Che Qianzi had recovered.
Seeing the flying sword streaking toward him, he hastily dodged.
Unexpectedly, after missing, the sword spun in midair and stabbed toward his back.
Sensing that this weapon was no ordinary artifact and lacking anything to block it with, Che Qianzi could only dodge again.
While he was busy avoiding the sword, Cui Yuandao launched another attack.
Using the sword’s attacks to create openings, he targeted Che Qianzi’s blind spots.
If Che Qianzi tried to counterattack, the flying sword would immediately seize the opportunity to strike his vital points.
Cui Yuandao had spent most of his life cultivating the unity of man and sword.
Together, they had killed more than a dozen cultivators.
Now, working in perfect harmony, they drove Che Qianzi into a desperate struggle.
Had his reactions been any slower, he would already have been split in two by the flying sword.
Even so, he still suffered several sword wounds.
Once, Cui Yuandao even managed to strike his back with a palm.
Fortunately, Che Qianzi reacted in time and directed the strange power inside his body to his back, taking the blow head-on.
He staggered but suffered no serious injury.
After enduring this combined assault for some time, Che Qianzi grew impatient.
Once again, the flying sword rushed toward his face.
This time—
He didn’t dodge.
Instead, he threw a punch directly at the sword tip.
Watching from a corner, Sun Desheng nearly jumped.
Good grief! Isn’t he about to lose three or four fingers?
Just as he cried out and prepared to help—
Boom!
Accompanied by a blinding flash, the longsword shattered into several pieces under Che Qianzi’s punch.
At that exact moment, Cui Yuandao had already reached his back and was preparing to strike.
Seeing his treasured weapon broken, the old Taoist froze.
Then he remembered the oath he had once sworn when he first obtained the sword—
As long as the sword exists, I exist.
Gritting his teeth, he poured all the techniques he had cultivated throughout his life into both fists and slammed them into Che Qianzi’s back.
Che Qianzi himself was in no better condition.
He had exhausted nearly all his strength to destroy the sword.
At this moment, he desperately needed to recover his breath.
Although he sensed Cui Yuandao’s sneak attack from behind, he no longer had the energy to dodge.
He could only endure it.
Thud!
The blow knocked Che Qianzi unconscious on the spot.
Yet Cui Yuandao’s condition was even worse.
Having exhausted his magic, his body lost the effects of the Imperishable Body Art.
Before his eyes, his flesh began decaying at a visible rate.
Looking at his rotting skin, Cui Yuandao grabbed the unconscious Che Qianzi and muttered, “This leather armor of yours is extremely strange… I’ll just take it as compensation for my magical weapon…”
As he spoke, a human-shaped cloud of smoke emerged from the old Taoist’s body once more and drifted toward Che Qianzi, preparing to slowly seep inside.
Just then, a voice suddenly sounded behind him.
“That’s enough. You really intend to seize this kid’s body?”
The voice did not belong to Fatty Sun.
Cui Yuandao’s soul was startled.
There’s a third living person in this tomb chamber?
Instinctively turning around, he saw a white-haired man standing there.
The man said calmly, “Dust returns to dust, earth returns to earth. Let the boy go and head to the underworld for reincarnation.”
Although only a soul, Cui Yuandao still possessed some abilities.
Abandoning Che Qianzi, he lunged toward the white-haired man.
I’ll take your body first, then—
Before the thought had even finished crossing his mind, the white-haired man had already seized his incorporeal soul by the throat.
Turning his head, he asked Sun Desheng, “Dasheng, this demon Taoist’s soul still refuses to behave. Should we keep him for now and send him to the underworld together once we’ve gathered enough to fill a cart?”
Sun Desheng chuckled.
“La Zi, forget about this old thing for now. Let me ask you something first—wouldn’t you say Che Qianzi is a treasure?”
The white-haired man was none other than Shen La.
After hesitating briefly, he replied, “That depends on how you look at it. Calling him a treasure isn’t wrong… but calling him a source of disaster wouldn’t be wrong either.”
“A disaster for others, anyway.”
Fatty Sun laughed.
“This old Taoist still has some use. Let’s keep him. In a few days, people from below will come to discuss the matter of the Nine Rivers Ghost Market. They can take him back on their way. La Zi, you’ve had it rough this time—following us around in secret and even helping me identify Cui Yuandao.”
As he spoke, Sun Desheng pulled a bean-sized earpiece from his ear.
Smiling, he continued, “This trip was worth it. We’ll talk about the rest after we get back. Looking at this skinny little fellow, who would’ve thought he’d possess such incredible abilities?”
While Sun Desheng spoke, Shen La picked up the broken sword from the ground.
Then, using the power of the Seed within his body, he reduced the fragments into powder.
Turning around, he pointed at the unconscious Che Qianzi and said to Fatty Sun:
“Dasheng…”
“This is the source of his power.”
