The current Wu Rendi seemed like a completely different person.
When the middle-aged man was dragged into the well, he had not made any attempt to stop it. Not only had he failed to act, he had even stopped Shen La. Thinking that Director Wu had some backup plan, Shen La had refrained from intervening. By the time he realized that Wu Rendi truly had no intention of acting, it was already too late…
The remaining biochemical and disease experts had been frightened out of their wits. Sun Desheng hurriedly reassured them:
“The one who just appeared was one of the drilling workers who fell into the well earlier! Don’t panic. We have a way to save them all. You there—take these experts away. Don’t let anything else happen.”
As he spoke, the soldiers who had entered with them escorted the experts away. Soon, only the members of the Polls Bureau remained.
By now, it was already late at night. Fortunately, the entire village had been illuminated by countless floodlights, making it as bright as daytime.
As the experts were leaving, everyone gathered around Wu Rendi.
Pointing at the well, Director Wu said:
“This is a Corpse Oil Pit. A large number of bodies were buried underground here. Under specific conditions, they mixed with groundwater, and eventually the corpses turned into a substance similar to corpse oil…”
Before he could finish, Sun Desheng interrupted him:
“Director Wu, forget about whether it’s petroleum or corpse oil for now. Can the man who was just dragged down still be saved?”
Fatty Sun continued:
“That fellow was one of the country’s top experts in biochemical diseases. If he dies here, the consequences will be serious.”
Wu Rendi glanced at him but said nothing.
Instead, he jumped onto the well frame and took out a copper coin from his pocket. After cutting his fingertip and smearing blood onto the coin, he tossed it into the well.
The coin didn’t sink immediately.
It floated on the black water, bobbing with the current. Neither sinking nor being washed out.
About the time it took to smoke a cigarette later, a hand suddenly emerged from the black water and grabbed the coin.
At that very instant, Wu Rendi leapt onto the edge of the well and seized the arm. With brute force, he pulled its owner out of the black water.
To everyone’s surprise, it was the very biochemical expert who had just been dragged into the well.
In only a few minutes, he had become like a madman.
Covered in black slime, he crouched on all fours like an animal and continuously roared at the people from the Polls Bureau. The hand holding the coin remained tightly clenched, as though afraid someone would take it away.
Without making a sound, Wu Rendi appeared behind him. Grabbing the man by the hair, he forcibly lifted him upright. Then he sliced across the man’s throat with his hand.
The expert let out a miserable scream.
Once Wu Rendi released him, the man collapsed onto the ground and began vomiting violently.
What came out of his mouth was black water mixed with bits of bone. Eventually, even green bile poured out.
Only then did he seem to regain his senses. His tightly clenched fist relaxed, and the copper coin, now badly deformed, dropped to the ground.
The expert stared blankly at the people before him and muttered foolishly:
“What’s going on? Why am I here… Who are you people? What’s happening… Who am I? Why can’t I remember anything…”
Ignoring him, Wu Rendi turned to the others and said:
“This is poisoning from corpse oil. Fortunately, he wasn’t poisoned too deeply. After some time, his memories will return…”
Before he could finish, Che Qianzi suddenly blurted out:
“Who are you? Too ugly to show your face? Did your parents give birth to you just so you could impersonate that pretty boy?”
As he spoke, the little Taoist was about to rush forward when Shen La grabbed him.
Even Shen La frowned at “Wu Rendi.”
“I thought something was off earlier. Since when has Director Wu become so long-winded? Speak! Who are you—”
Before Shen La could finish, “Wu Rendi” smiled bitterly.
His body rapidly changed.
Though still a white-haired pretty boy, he had transformed into Yang Xiao.
“Let me explain first—Director Wu ordered me to impersonate him.”
Yang Xiao quickly explained himself and gave everyone an embarrassed smile.
“Director Wu had important matters to deal with and was worried something might happen to his eldest son, so he asked me to take his place. Otherwise, even if you gave me ten times the courage, I wouldn’t dare impersonate him.”
Seeing that Yang Xiao had told the truth, Che Qianzi snorted.
“Where the hell did he go? Looking for another woman to produce another illegitimate child?”
“I really don’t know. I wouldn’t dare speak nonsense.”
Ever since learning Che Qianzi’s identity, Yang Xiao had developed a headache whenever dealing with the youngster. After all, he had personally sent the boy to the ICU before. Looking at him now, Che Qianzi clearly inherited his father’s vindictiveness. Who knew whether, after the father and son reconciled, the boy would ask his father to make life miserable for him again?
Seeing the awkward atmosphere, Sun Desheng chuckled and stepped in.
“Old Yang, you brought this on yourself. By pretending to be Director Wu, you were practically taking advantage of our Third Brother. If you’re going to play someone’s father, then naturally you’ve got to endure a few insults.”
“Enough. Back to business.”
“Old Yang, explain this Corpse Oil Pit. Can the people who fell in earlier still be saved?”
Yang Xiao was delighted to change the subject and immediately replied:
“This corpse oil formed naturally. It’s completely different from the corpse oil I refine. Strictly speaking, calling it corpse fluid would be more accurate.
Getting it on your skin isn’t a problem, but it absolutely must not enter your mouth. Just one drop swallowed and the body begins rotting rapidly. Drink enough of it and you’ll turn into a living corpse like that expert just now.
As long as we can make them vomit up the corpse fluid, their lives can be saved.”
After hearing this, Sun Desheng pondered for a moment.
“Old Yang, if that’s the case, then if we pump all the corpse fluid out of the well, will everything be resolved?”
“Hard to say.”
Yang Xiao shook his head.
“The Corpse Oil Pits I’ve seen before were nowhere near this large. At most, they could fill a gasoline barrel. I’ve never heard of one continuously overflowing like this.”
“But look at this place. The corpse fluid below is still gushing upward.”
“I’m not convinced that merely digging a well could have exposed a Corpse Oil Pit.”
Sun Desheng stared at him.
“You mean there’s something underneath pushing all this corpse fluid up?”
Yang Xiao hesitated.
“We’ll have to go down and take a look. It might also be some magical artifact causing a conflict of Yin and Yang and forcing the corpse fluid upward.”
“It’s impossible to tell right now.”
“My suggestion is to wait until most of the corpse fluid has flowed out and then send someone down to investigate.”
He paused before adding firmly:
“But let me make one thing clear. Anyone can go down—except Che Qianzi.”
“Why not?”
Che Qianzi immediately exploded.
“Did you piss out the corpse fluid down there?”
Realizing that Yang Xiao was only trying to protect him for Wu Rendi’s sake, the little Taoist became even more annoyed.
Eyes wide open, he shouted:
“If you won’t let me go down, then I insist on going!”
“Try and stop me! And if you dare stop me, I’ll kill myself right in front of you!”
