The white-haired man called out four or five times, but Che Qianzi acted as if he neither saw nor heard him. With his neck stiff, he walked straight past Wu Rendi without even turning his head.
Rarely did Wu Rendi get so angry that he rolled his eyes repeatedly. If it had been anyone else, a bolt of thunder would have already struck down. But this was Che Qianzi. After hearing from Kong Dalong about how miserable the boy’s childhood had been, he simply couldn’t bring himself to act harshly. He couldn’t “educate” him the way he had last night.
When Che Qianzi reached the entrance of the Mysterious Investigation Bureau, he deliberately turned back and spat on the ground in Wu Rendi’s direction, then swaggered off toward Sun Desheng’s office…
Che Qianzi could provoke Wu Rendi like this, but Sun Desheng did not dare.
He hurried over with a smiling face. “The kid’s still young… going through a rebellious phase… whatever it is, you can just take it out on me. I’ll go back and talk to him properly… make him come apologize and acknowledge his roots…”
Wu Rendi had originally intended to vent his anger on Sun Desheng instead, but after hearing this, he changed his mind. He nodded slightly.
“Tell him to come find me. Don’t make me wait too long.”
With that, Wu Rendi turned and slowly walked back into the bureau.
Sun Desheng quickly ran back to his office and saw Che Qianzi squatting outside the door—he didn’t even have the key.
Before Sun Desheng could speak, the boy said first, “Fatty, don’t say anything unnecessary. Don’t let anything unpleasant come out of my mouth. I treat you like a brother—don’t treat me like a pawn.”
Sun Desheng chuckled, opened the door, and brought him inside.
“Listen to you. I’m your big brother, not Wu Rendi’s son.”
He pressed Che Qianzi onto the sofa. “No matter what, I’m on your side. I look down on that Wu guy anyway. What’s so great about him? Just lived a couple thousand years longer—that’s cheating. Put him in a fair fight and I, Sun Desheng, might not get—killed…”
He finished the last word weakly.
Che Qianzi glanced at him helplessly. “Fatty, that was pointless.”
“As long as I’m on your side, that’s all that matters,” Sun Desheng grinned.
Then he changed the subject.
“Right—what about your master? Now that he’s shown up, you’ve got to take care of him in his old age.”
Che Qianzi said, “Nonsense. Of course I’ll take care of him. I already gave him all the gold you gave me. The card for storing gold is with him now. He’s almost eighty—he might as well gamble it all.”
“All… all of it?” Sun Desheng blinked. “Not even a little for retirement?”
But he didn’t dwell on it.
“Fine, fine. It’s your money anyway.”
Then he leaned closer. “But think about it—your master’s almost eighty. Don’t you want him to live a few more years? Maybe even… achieve immortality?”
Che Qianzi’s eyes immediately lit up.
But then he frowned. “You’re trying to trick me into going to Wu Rendi for the elixir, aren’t you? No. I just swore this morning—I won’t talk to him, and I definitely won’t acknowledge him. How am I supposed to ask?”
“Brother, you still don’t get it,” Sun Desheng said. “You’re not asking him. He owes you. You’re just going to collect.”
He put an arm around Che Qianzi’s shoulder.
“Besides, for your master’s immortality, what’s a little humiliation? If I were you, I’d just go up and call him ‘Dad.’ Get the elixir first—then whether you acknowledge him later is your business. He’d be in the wrong and wouldn’t dare cause trouble.”
The temptation of immortality was too strong. Che Qianzi hesitated.
Sun Desheng didn’t press further and changed the topic instead.
“You’re staying at my place tonight, right? Your sister-in-law and I are making dumplings. Black truffle and caviar filling—your niece can eat a whole plate.”
“Fishy stuff like that? Who can eat it?” Che Qianzi grimaced. “Fatty, does that immortality thing really work? Only Wu Rendi has it? No one else?”
“Only him,” Sun Desheng said confidently. “You’ve seen Old Yang and the others—they all survived that long because of him. Even Shen La got one pill and became immortal.”
Che Qianzi slowly became tempted.
He thought of Kong Dalong, whom he hadn’t seen in half a year—suddenly looking much older.
After a long hesitation, he asked, “Fatty… if I go ask him, will he really give it?”
“Of course he will!” Sun Desheng said immediately. “Even if you wanted the moon from the sky, he’d find a way to get it for you. Just go ask: ‘Wu Rendi, give me immortality.’ If he refuses, I’ll personally hand myself over to you.”
After thinking for a while, Che Qianzi finally nodded.
“Fine. I’ll give him one chance. Let’s see if he values it.”
He immediately left Sun Desheng’s office and wandered over to the Sixth Division.
After hesitating for a while at the door, he pushed it open anyway.
The room was empty—only Wu Rendi’s office door was open.
Che Qianzi slowly walked up, took a deep breath, and pushed it open.
Inside, only Wu Rendi was there, looking at him with a faint, almost amused smile.
Seeing that Che Qianzi had come so quickly to apologize, Wu Rendi was slightly surprised. He thought Sun Desheng must have done something impressive to persuade this stubborn boy.
As long as he opened his mouth to apologize, Wu Rendi intended to accept him immediately.
He was even prepared to devote everything to raising this child properly.
But unexpectedly—
Che Qianzi went straight to the point.
“I heard you have an immortality elixir. How many do you have?”
Hearing that the boy wasn’t here to apologize at all, Wu Rendi’s mood darkened. He rolled his eyes.
“How many?” he snorted. “How many do you want—I have that many.”
Che Qianzi was one of the few people who wasn’t afraid of him either. He glared back.
“I want as many as you’ve got.”
“I have as many as you want.”
“You’ve got as many as I want.”
And just like that, father and son began arguing head-on.
Fortunately, Wu Rendi still had a sliver of restraint left and didn’t send him back to the ICU.
But all his white hair stood on end.
