Bureau of Paranormal Investigation: The Final Chapter 6 min read 158 of 188 8

Knowing that gunmen had targeted his wife, Sun Desheng no longer dared to let Shao Yiyi return home. He brought her and the child to the Civil Affairs Bureau together.

By this time, the bureau had already gone on high alert.

The Second Division had gathered at the entrance, and roadblocks had been set up outside the courtyard—clearly preparing in case something like the heavy blow suffered during Gao Liang’s era repeated itself.

When Sun Desheng’s business van arrived, the Second Division immediately moved to clear the barriers.

Sun Fatty rolled down the window and said to Ximen Lian outside:

“Big-shot, what’s this about? Afraid people won’t know something happened in the bureau? Just let everyone go inside and release Yin Bai. What a shame Yang Jun isn’t here—otherwise we could’ve brought that black cat over to yowl a couple of times…”

Ximen Lian gave a wry smile and leaned toward the window.

“Director Ren is a bit shaken. He asked us to come out and boost morale. According to us, we should just activate the bureau’s formation—no outsider would get in. But Old Ren refused. He doesn’t believe in those complicated formations. People really can’t live without believing in something…”

Sun Desheng chuckled.

“Don’t listen to him. Tell your people to go back inside. Take down the roadblocks too. We’re a government agency—what’s with the barricades?”

As he spoke, he handed an entire pack of cigarettes into Ximen Lian’s hands.

Ximen Lian took it with a grin.

“Alright, I’ll tell them. Big Saint, you should come back soon. Old Ren really isn’t suited for this job. Without you as director, none of us feel at ease. If something like the One Anchor Building incident happens again, I don’t know about others—but I definitely won’t be able to stay in this position…”

Sun Desheng laughed.

“I’m back now, aren’t I? Just wait and see—the bureau won’t fall apart as long as I’m here, no matter who’s director. Alright, I’m going upstairs to talk to Old Ren.”

After parking at the entrance, Sun Desheng said to Shao Yiyi:

“Take little Wuzi over to Chief Hao’s office for a bit. We’ll go see Ren Rong. Now that we know who’s behind it, it won’t take long.”

After settling his wife and child, the group brought the gunman straight to his former office.

When they entered, Ren Rong was wearing a bulletproof vest and on the phone.

Seeing them arrive, he gestured for them to sit and wait while he continued speaking to a senior official from the ministry:

“Yes, all six have been captured. We’re interrogating them now… Your criticism is correct. The social impact today is very bad. I will solve the case as soon as possible… It shouldn’t be someone from within the circle. All six came armed, no spiritual methods involved… Our bureau didn’t suffer any casualties… Yes, I’ll take full responsibility and solve it within three days…”

Finally hanging up, he let out a long breath and said bitterly to Sun Desheng:

“I heard you were also attacked by gunfire? This whole thing was aimed at me. I even put your wife in danger—this is my failure. Whatever you decide to do, I will fully support you.”

Sun Desheng chuckled.

“Director Ren, now you’re shifting the responsibility onto me.”

But then he added:

“You’re right about one thing. This already involved my wife and child. Whatever I do next is justified. Shen La has already caught the shooter who fired at my wife.”

Ren Rong glanced at the gunman lying motionless on the floor.

“Do whatever you want with him. I won’t interfere, participate, or report anything. I’ll pretend I don’t exist. If anything happens to him, I can testify it was self-defense.”

The gunman began trembling uncontrollably.

“I’ll talk! I’ll talk! I’ll cooperate! I’ll do anything! It was Du Qian—she paid us—”

Before he could finish—

There was a knock at the door.

Old Mo pushed it open and walked in.

Seeing everyone inside, he nodded at Sun Desheng in greeting before walking up to Ren Rong.

“Director Ren, there’s a delivery at the gate. A large box. It’s addressed specifically to you.”

A delivery… at a time like this.

Ren Rong didn’t even dare go pick it up.

He walked to the window and looked outside the courtyard.

“What is it? Has it been checked? Could it be a bomb?”

He muttered to himself:

“They even dare to storm the bureau with guns—what else wouldn’t they do?”

Seeing that Ren Rong was clearly traumatized, Sun Desheng smiled and took out his phone.

He called Yang Xiao.

“Old Yang, you in the bureau? Still interrogating those two? There’s a delivery at the gate addressed to you… How would I know? You always buy random things for your wife. They say it’s a big box—the courier is still waiting…”

After hanging up, he grinned at Ren Rong.

“Start the timer. Go down in two minutes. Even if it’s a bomb, Yang Xiao will be fine.”

Almost everyone understood what he meant.

Only Che Qianzi couldn’t help muttering to Shen La:

“Is Yang Xiao also immortal? Are you too, Shen La? Does the bureau assign quotas for immortality? Can I apply? Do I need a Beijing household registration or something?”

He had fully accepted the idea of immortality after seeing Tu An survive a gunshot.

Before Shen La could answer, Sun Desheng’s phone rang again.

It was Yang Xiao.

“Sun Fatty, you’re really something! Just say I’m being used as a human shield! I thought it was my Italian furniture delivery and ran downstairs! Good thing I didn’t open it in front of my wife—get down here right now!”

After a few curses, he hung up.

Sun Desheng smiled.

“Alright, let’s go see your delivery, Director Ren. And I’m serious—stop ordering random junk online to the bureau. It’s bad for morale if the staff sees it.”

They left the office.

Old Mo escorted the gunman downstairs for detention.

On the way, Che Qianzi kept pestering Shen La about immortality until the white-haired man finally got annoyed.

“Go ask Director Wu for an immortality pill. If you don’t die after taking it, you’re immortal.”

By the time they reached the lobby, a refrigerator-sized glass tank stood in the center.

Inside it was a female corpse floating in liquid.

The Second Division had just returned and immediately felt a chill run down their spines.

Yang Xiao stood beside the tank.

He pointed at it and said coldly:

“It’s full of formalin. She’s only been dead a few hours.”

“Sun Desheng, next time you need someone to test a trap, send Yang Jun.”

Sun Desheng didn’t respond.

He turned back and quickly called Old Mo:

“Bring that guy over. Let him identify her.”

The gunman collapsed instantly.

His face drained of all color as he pointed at the tank.

“Du Qian… that’s Du Qian…”

Before he could finish—

Sun Desheng’s phone rang again.

An unfamiliar number.

He answered.

A man’s voice came through:

“Director Sun, consider this my ‘gift’ to you…”
